Few cars on the scheme, due to change, what do you do?

We have all seen the plummeting car numbers on the scheme over the past few weeks but what do you do if your due to change? Hopefully motability will let everyone who wants to keep their existing car extend the lease, but what if your at the end of a two year extension what happens then, would you be happy to continue paying the same money for a five year plus car as you pay for a new one?

It is likely the chip shortage is here for many months to come so this isn’t changing this year or early next.

Has anyone spoke to motability about the reduced choice available on the scheme and if so what did they say.

The only person who got all his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.

What suits you best I guess, everyone has different concerns..

I am due to change but lack of availability and too high advance prices on the few possibly available that ‘could’ just about suit my needs means there is pretty much nothing available for me right now.

I spoke to Motability last week and they said the way forward may be to extend the lease, hope that something comes up in the meantime that is suitable and within budget and possibly try to go for a grant during the course of the extension for the ones that are suitable but out of price range.

It’s pretty much an extend and watch ready to pounce scenario. Due to Covid, shielding and the lockdowns, I’m in the ‘lucky’ position of just being below the mileage required to extend for two years if needs be.

What car you driving now Sue, is it still acceptable for your needs, someone may be able to advise on a like for like within your price range.

I’ve got a Skoda Karoq, it was a compromise car last time around due to the advance payments so has never been perfect.

I get by with us making do and adapting but without the help of my carer to get my legs in or out, I’m in a pickle. Over the last few months, we have gone through the list of cheaper cars to see if they would be suitable but none have been or would need expensive optional extras/adaptations to be.

The closest we got was the 3008 but even that had issues (advance payment pretty high, not able to close the boot independently, boot space a bit tight).

              Essentials

              Electronic handbrake

Front and rear sensors and rear view camera.

A higher ride height (I can fall into an estate car but then get stuck and can’t get out and have to be rescued – much laughter caused at dealerships)

Boot rise not too high or a hands free boot

A large boot area for a scooter, wheelchair and the possibility (if pennies allow) of a hoist.

              Automatic

              Non plug in..

I had a 5008 before the Karoq, perfect for getting my legs in or out and the right height for getting in or out and plenty of space for the chair and everything else but I spent 3 years not being able to use the boot because I couldn’t reach to shut the begger if I was on my own!

                Hi Sue

Your requirement seem to be much the same as mine car wise, auto, EHB, Auto-Hold, height to get in and out, boot for scooter, the nightmare goes on but at least I’m fortune that my carer wife became a pensioner last June so were using that to pay the AP on our next car, that was until it disappeared last month.

I know how hard it is finding suitable cars at the best of times but now so much harder now but wish you luck in finding something suitable and yes if it wasn’t for my wife’s pension (only state pension I must add) I would be going down the grants road too so well worth looking into that.

As for laughing dealership, and I hope they were laughing with you and not at you, I get a blank expression when I try to explain the hoops I have to jump through trying to do something as easy as raising the back seat back up after its been folded down flat for something.

I agree that those requiring a vehicle large enough for a wheelchair and also the under 25 have a very limited choice.

ChrisK – They were laughing with me thank goodness, at first they didn’t know how to respond but because I was in fits of laughter and cracking jokes about it, they took their cue from me.

Better than one particular dealership that had a rant about people getting free cars and they didn’t deserve them the last time I was changing car, suffice to say they didn’t get my business but we did try them again this time, thought it was a different guy but as soon as he went into a very un PC rant, we realised it was actually the same guy but he had grown a beard and got a bit broader during lockdown…and yes, he was their Motability specialist!

fwippers – Agreed. Fine if you have 2-3k to drop on each advance payment but a nightmare if pennies are tight.

                      Notice on Skoda website –

We regret to inform you that the following models: FABIA Hatch, SCALA, OCTAVIA, SUPERB, KAMIQ, KAROQ, KODIAQ and ENYAQ iV are currently unavailable to order on the Motability Scheme until further notice. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Did I miss the Enyaq coming onto the scheme?

That’s interesting Mike 700. It makes me think the Enyaq will be available at some point in the near future

                          That’s what I was thinking?

I had a short ride , as a passenger, in an Enyaq the other day- no idea which trim it was?

Quite impressed, and better looking,  I think , than the ID.4?

I had a 2hr test drive in an IV80 Enyaq about 3 weeks ago and loved it. If indeed it comes onto the scheme as an IV60 (the IV80 would be too expensive to get on the scheme) I would order one tomorrow.

Problem is can’t see them coming on the scheme any time soon, even as a private buy they are quoting next year deliveries now.

We are waiting it out for now as our 2018 Tiguan was due for a change this May and due to a balls up by VW we cancelled our order for another ne wTiguan which should have been here last month.

We are even thinking of coming off the scheme and buying private if nothing else more suitable comes out by xmas.

                                  @ sue

Have you tried or thought of the new MG HS, we have the exclusive model but they do automatics, dct paddles and phev cars.

They are huge cars, a high ride have most of the bells and whistle ur after large boot space and is the smoothest car i have driven to date.  The AP is not to bad we paid £799

Just a thought as wen i looked through what ur needs where regarding a car, then this one ticks nearly all or the boxes

I had yes, unfortunately just when I happened upon it, I started seeing reports of issues with them. On top of that, the boot is too small (we struggle with a boot that is 520 litres), the fuel economy is awful and we don’t have a dealer within easy travel.

Thanks for thinking of me though and the suggestion. It’s a pity as they do have every single bit of bell and whistle that is on my essential and would really like list but just on the fuel economy alone, it just isn’t a viable option, let alone the fact that it just wouldn’t work for us in boot size and the nearest dealership is some distance away.

Well, I’ve now formally extended my lease for another two years.

Here’s hoping something comes up in the meantime but at least I have some breathing space now.

Good decision Sue, with the chip shortage its unlikely things will change on the scheme until next year and you are in an ideal position where, if something comes on, you can strike straight away.
