Hi, we are looking at exending our 3 year lease with motability another 12 months, does this mean that we have to keep the car another 12 months or if we see something else earlier, for example after 3 months into the lease extension, can we apply for that car the usual way? Basically do we have flexibility to get another car anytime during that 12 month extension period or are we stuck with the car for 12 months regardless?
Also, if anyone has extended their lease for any period at all has everything gone ok or is there anything to be aware of?
Thank you 🙂

i extended my first car 2 years, you have to get the mots done but thats all in the lease, the advantage now is you get a bigger gcb for each year completed. all it took was a phone call.
as far as i know you can then ring up and change if a bargain comes up.but you only get gcb for complete years i think.
April 4, 2021 at 11:40 am #144499@mitch – thanks, I was wondering about the gcb, that would be very useful having an extra full year.
It’s funny though as I thought the gcb would have declined if you had the vehicle longer as it would do more mileage and there would be more wear and tear.

KevThe gcb at 600.00 after 3 years goes up to 900.00 if you keep car a further 2 years

KevI rang about this and decided not to extend as 600.00 is 200.00 per year but on 5 years would loose 100.00 as only 900.00 plus the AP would be higher on new one by then i would expect . So better to change now and look again in 3 years and enjoy another new vehicle, ( to extend lease your vehicle will have to be under 15,ooo miles)

RichardIt’s not really extending it for another x period it’s more just a rolling extension, you can change at any point after the 36 months expires. Unless somethings changed that was the case when the MiL was on the scheme

I had just under 20,000 miles they were happy to extend my lease
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

KevMotability website statement on contract
Can I extend my car lease?
If you wish to keep your car longer you will need to contact Customer Services for assistance. It may be possible to arrange a short extension to your lease agreement to allow a new application. Or, if you have adaptations on your car or the mileage is likely to be less than 15,000 at the end of the agreement, it may be possible to keep the car for a longer period. Alternatively, you also have the option to purchase your car at the end of the lease.April 4, 2021 at 2:57 pm #144523I’ve never extended so I might be wrong but I think the 15,000 mile rule is a guarantee to extend but other things are taken into consideration too like the amount you paid for in the AP for instance if you say you paid an AP of £4,000 then at 3 years had 20,000 miles on the clock you would be a bit peeved if they refused you an extension.
April 4, 2021 at 3:16 pm #144525YorkMan – As per your original question, you do not have to keep the car for the full extension period, so it might be best to extend for 2 years. You can still change the car at any time whatsoever within that 2 year period, but if you did end up going the full 5 years you get £900 GCB whereas if you change at 4 years I think you get the same £600 GCB as if you changed at 3 years. Mileage seems to have very little bearing on it. Our car has done 30k miles and Motability were happy to extend it. In the end we decided to change, as the way the scheme is going we can see the top end cars that we like now not being available in a couple of years time.
April 4, 2021 at 8:48 pm #144542Thanks everyone, some useful info I did not know, it’s always good to be prepared before I call motability.
The lease does not end until September but we have decided that we like the look of a lot of new EV’s coming out the end of this year such as the Nissan Ariya and Kia EV 6. Whether they will be on motability is another question but by extending at least one more year that would take us into September 2022 and there must be many more EV’s by then.

AzzyIt also depends on what car you have when it comes to extending.
motability were only willing to extend my Seat Leon for 3months max and in that time I had to order another car or it would go back, the reason I was given is because of resale value and it didn’t make business sense because my AP was low to begin with.
so don’t automatically think you will get 12 months +April 5, 2021 at 6:28 am #144553I spoke to Motability about 2 months ago, regarding extending my contract, as the car has loads of Kit on board, and a few extras and has done less than 20000 miles, and they agreed an extension of ‘ up to 2 years’, which I can cancel at any time during the 2 years period!
I waited until the new quarter prices were published , just in case there was something comparable for a lowish AP, and then confirmed with them that I wished to proceed with the agreed extension.
The paperwork from Motability and the Insurance Co. should arrive tomorrow.
It was an easy, painless process!
April 5, 2021 at 7:32 am #144559My understanding is Motability have thrown the normal rules out the window regarding extensions, and good for them. I got a 12 month extension and my car was on 61k at the time. They really had no option in the current circumstances
