I could have ordered a new car yesterday. However, unless we switch to a WAV (which we don’t want to), there is literally nothing on the scheme currently that fulfills our needs i.e. 82cm rear door opening height for my wife’s wheelchair hoist. We have the old shape Kuga right now, which just has that. The new shape, even if we wanted one, has the currently fashionable swept down rear end, which reduces the opening.

So I called Motability yesterday and extended for 2 years. They were very understanding. They even mentioned that, if things don’t improve in 2 years, they’re considering extending leases further.

Here’s hoping some bigger SUVs come on/back onto the scheme.

Current: MY24 Renault Austral Iconic FHD. AP £3,995 +£570 for hoist.

      Previous Motability cars:
2013 Ford Focus estate petrol auto.
2016 Vauxhal Zafira 1.4T petrol SE Auto.
2019 Ford Kuga Vignale 1.5 petrol auto AWD.

Worrying that they are talking years not months! Not surprised that they are very happy to extend leases as it’s a great earner for them.

To what end though? Some new offices? Higher pay still? I’m not sure what else they can put the money into.

To be honest I would be more than happy to extend my lease, no new AP to find or towbar at £500 + every time we change our car.

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.

no doubt they should be putting their profits into the charity to pay for adaptions. its the one biggest gripe i have, as that is what motability should be about

Current Car: Hyundai Kona Premium EV...2 way 40kg hoist
Last Car: Toyota C-HR Excel Hybrid...4 way 80kg hoist

I forgot to mention that, due to the lockdowns and us both being clinically vulnerable – wife extremely clinically vulnerable – we’ve hardly had any use of the car. 3,500 miles in almost 3 years! That’s almost £1/mile + petrol, given the AP.

So that’s another reason to extend – so we can feel we’ve used it.

Quite understandable that you would want to extend. What is wrong is that you will pay a further £6,500 for the privilege. Give the savings that Motability make with lease extensions (most notably no capital outlay on a new car) I feel that they should be at 50% of the sacrificed benefits, not 100%.

I agree. Motability are the financial winners when we extend. They should increase the GCB or something to comepnsate – at least partially.

The GCB increases to £900 after 5 years.

Apply for the WAV. But I would seek advice the best time to start the application, not too soon or not too late.

I already said we don’t want a WAV. Nowhere to park one, even if we did want something that big.

I hear what you say, if a WAV is too big, it’s too big.

I mentioned it as we had a VW Transporter WAV and it was just over a foot longer than the car. It is worth mentioning that it was much easier to drive than we thought, the high driving position and great all round visibility made it a doddle to drive and park.

I totally agree, I think paying the same for a 4 or 5-year-old car as somebody who has just driven their nice new car out of the dealers is totally wrong. I applied for a grant at 3 years and 4 turned down both times as they said our car was suitable and didn’t need changing.

Since I require a tall SUV with a decent size boot for my scooter, the choice has always been limited. Now 18 months later I have a choice of possible four cars if I count the new Kuga which I am not sure would be suitable.

                              Which Mobility Car

Our WAV is on a 64 plate, a replacement has been ordered (a long time ago) and still no build date so it could be up to a year.
It is not an ideal situation but I have no complaints paying full price as the age of the vehicle matters not, the fact it is serviced and fully maintained is too valuable to me.

I just looked at the cost of a couple of commercial lease prices, the difference between 3 years and 4 years is very small. On one it was £6 per month.

I think Motability need to take the mileage into account more now regarding GCB. We will hand our car back sometime in 2022 and it will only have done about 12,000 miles in nearly 4 years.  They should introduce a low mileage bonus on top of the good condition bonus.

I looked at commercial leases. The whole retired and on a fixed PHI payout + disability oincome means we can’t qualify.
