So, picking up my new car next month, what do I need to get?

I won’t be having a home charging point, do Motability automatically sign you up for the BP Pulse subscription, or is this something I need to do?

What other networks would you recommend signing up for?

What are the must have apps?

Any other things to prepare for that will make the transition easier?

Must have apps for finding chargers are Zap Map & PlugShare (PlugShare has Apple Carplay compatibility now).

Charging apps depend on where you live & where you’ll charge, PodPoint is always worth having (some supermarket (Lidl, Tesco, Sainsburys) 7kW posts & they also have rapid chargers also at some supermarkets), BP Pulse maybe for other 7kW free posts at other supermarkets (Waitrose, Asda). ChargePoint possibly, Hubsta (I’ve never used it), Maingau if driving in Germany (I have it but never used it, as they used to have Ionity at a discounted rate), E.ON Drive if you ever pass their ultra-rapid chargers, Electric Highway if you like broken chargers in MSAs, Shell Recharge, SWARCO. Plus any for companies that have local area coverage. I wouldn’t get all of them, but look on Zap-Map as to where you are likely to charge & get the corresponding apps.

Instead of apps, consider RFID cards, I have lots of them but the free ones such as Shell Recharge RFID card are a good idea, and can also start some chargers other than Shell ones.

Don’t know about BP Pulse subscription, they give you a 3 month free introduction but they stopped talking to me last summer when they said they couldn’t install a charger at my home for a reason that didn’t hold up to scrutiny. I then extended my 3 months with 6 months from Peugeot, but that’ll end this month.

The other things you need usually come with the car, that being the Type 2 cable for connecting to those 7kW posts. A granny charger is also useful but not as an everyday charging solution.

 

My advice it to visit some of your local chargers before you get the EV, so you have time to read the instructions on them, maybe ask EV owners how to use them (I get asked frequently by people thinking of getting an EV or having ordered one).

Also learn which plug you’ll want on the rapid chargers, the CCS, and know that you sometimes need to hold it in the car’s charge port whilst the charger negotiates with the car.

Which car are you awaiting ??

App wise i have zap-map, Plugshare, Pod-Point and Engie installed as well as Uvo which is the KIA software so i can control the car remotely

Other than that i have followed the advice from gothitjulie which has made the transition a breeze really and now i simply love driving again.

Thanks Gothitjulie, lots of reading to get on with but enjoying the learning curve.  Re the BP Pulse subscription, apparently, when they contact me to see if I need a home charger, they should provide me with a free subscription in lieu of the home charger.

 

Stuart, I managed to get the deal on the last of the old model Hyundai Kona Premium SE Electric MY20.5, I should pick it up over the Easter weekend
