EU parliament set to accept renewables deal with assurances on ammonia plants.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – European Union lawmakers plan to accept changes made by countries last week to the bloc’s renewable energy law, to give assurances to France and others on potentially exempting ammonia plants, the parliament’s lead negotiator said on Monday.

EU countries on Friday agreed late changes to the law, adding an amendment that said some ammonia plants would struggle to switch to renewable fuels, and a pledge from the European Commission to consider exempting them from renewable targets.

The law significantly increases the EU’s renewable energy targets, requiring 42.5% of EU energy to be renewable by 2030, replacing the bloc’s current 32% target for that date.

Markus Pieper, the EU Parliament’s lead negotiator on the law, said the changes appeared to have been necessary to unblock the law.

“As Parliament, we would have preferred to go without, but we will not oppose the further procedure,” he said in a statement.

Pieper said the parliament’s negotiating team of lawmakers from various political groups shared this stance – suggesting the bill should pass a vote in the EU assembly, needed for the law to enter into force.

EU lawmakers had previously pushed back on changing the law, since EU countries and lawmakers had agreed a deal in March, after months of negotiations, which was supposed to be final.

The ammonia opt-out could allow certain plants to switch to fuels made using nuclear energy, rather than renewables fuels. Nuclear energy is CO2-free but not renewable.

France had led a group of countries pushing for nuclear power to be recognised in the renewables law. Opponents including Germany and Spain had argued doing this would undermine efforts to massively expand wind and solar.

“We are quite happy with this compromise,” French Energy Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher said on Monday. German Economy and Climate Minister Robert Habeck called it a “breakthrough”.

As part of the deal, France also won an acknowledgement from the Commission of the contribution other “non-fossil energy sources” – such as nuclear – make towards climate goals.

Planet earth has heated up and cooled down since its creation  and will continue to do so untill it dies. I’m no great believer in this climate agenda governments are pushisng, the need of carbon neutral or indeed the Paris agreement. It’s said we are failing global warming and has continued since the Paris agreement was invented. I myself believe we will will not stop what planet earth has done since year dot. It is what earth does and has always done.

Thats not to say some green iventions such as EV’s are pointless, because there the a case of better health for us humans etc.

However my point is governments are being hypocritical with their climate agenda by allowing what suits industries!

My beliefs are my beliefs, your might be different which I accept. It is pointless arguing about one beliefs whaever they are, as its unlikely to change anyones minds and cause only friction. Please do bare this in mind!

I’m with you kezo and the western leaders are going about this with their heads up their backsides, notice I said western leaders because eastern ones couldn’t give a flying fig about anything and were happy to have China produce everything that causes Co2 and so sweep it under the carpet or if you like, out of sight, out of mind.

It’s been my belief that both Labour and Tory governments want working class folk off the roads and all this G8 along with the elite of the World business flying into Davos every year in their Lear Jets to tell us not to fly but this BS is a good enough excuse and with western government doing there best to gag the internet under the pretence its all about child pornography and like Sheep we all go along with it.

Who on Earth would believe our so say free and elected government would even think for a second in introducing an Office of Disinformation as it has actually happened under Covid restrictions with no parliamentary debate and could easily be passed to other subject but tell me, who decides what is “disinformation”, you or I, no of course not its decided by some unelected so and so under the guises of the UN, WHO and just about any other organisation who want to rule the World.

… and so with Gods and men the Sheep remain inside their pen.

I’m glad I’m not alone in thinking it Chris.

A couple of days ago there was an x Australian PM or MP can’t remember on Sky or BBC show basically saying something like  the government should be concentrating on the energy we already have as security, rather than investing in the race to net zero and concentrating on the British people getting the debt and interest rates down. Sensible man IMO!
