Electric charge point/government grant

Hi everyone I wondered if someone could shine some light on the charger situation for electric car, I’m really interested in getting the I’d.3 but we’ve been told our property don’t suit having it fitted, my partner is my nominated driver as I don’t drive. My son lives around the corner and I’ve asked the question to motability if they would fit one there but it was a no of course, he’s second named driver at the moment but wondered If he was changed to main driver that we would be able to successfully apply for the government grant for the car at his address? Everything I’ve read seems to point out that you need to be the lease holder to qualify for the discount. Obviously he’s not I am, but does naming a nominated driver mean we would be able to get that grant for his address? Hopefully I’ve come across clear. This has been driving me bonkers and motability just recommend us to use zap app to find nearest charger instead… Not feeling very confident without one at home or at least at my son’s.

To qualify for OLEV’s EVHS grant, you need to have purchased an eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle or leased one for at least six months. You must have off-street parking. You must install an OLEV-approved chargepoint.

Of course if not using the grant, anyone can fit a charge point to their own property.

The rules are changing in April next year making it much easier to get a kerb side charger fitted. If you can park your car off street you will not qualify for the grant.

Yes you read that correct if you have off street parking you will NOT qualify for the grant.

Im not sure about Motability’s rules but I think I’m correct in saying they will only fit a charger at the motability customers home.

I’m not sure about this either but I don’t think your son would qualify for the grant if he decided to pay for one himself as the rules about ev ownership to qualify for the grant are strict.

The only light at the end of the tunnel for you are the changes coming in from April 1st next year that should make it easier for you to apply for and obtain an off street charger at your home.

Motability still don’t know how these changes will affect them going forward. Hopefully they can still continue supplying chargers both off street and on, but this is still to be decided. If they don’t you could apply for the grant yourself but that could leave you with additional expense.

Dunno what’s worse, parking on the pavement, parking on double yellow lines or obstructing the pavement…Sheesh.

We can expect more of this sort of nonsense as BEVs roll out, people will be obsessed with charging at home even if they shouldn’t, doubly so if there is a few pence to be saved.

In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.

Contractor not paid to think.  Street lighting people maintain the poles, highways people paint the yellow lines. Different council departments, so there’s probably no single map showing both!

Get used to it guys we are likely to see tens of thousands of them popping up in the coming years.

They will probably become obsolete over the next decade or so as quicker battery charging is introduced but in the meantime essential to keep the EV momentum going.

That charger is as much as the proverbial chocolate fire guard.
