New car collected today, but to my horror this evening I found out my driving license had expired the beginning of 2019.
My fault, my license is always with me in my wallet, but I can’t remember the last time I actually looked at it.The dealership took a photocopy of it at the time of ordering & Im listed on the temp insurance certificate for the new car, no red flags raised tho.
Im sure I never had a license reminder,
the dvla website won’t let me renew online,
so no driving for me until I get the ok from the dvla.
So to put my mind at rest, dose anybody know what the dvla are likely to say or do tomorrow when I call?
All new & shiny but I can’t drive it!

alan grimshawmine run out a couple of weeks ago, applied on line and received it a few days later, they sent an email back straight away for coformation to state my license was being renewed and asked for my passport number to use the photo off it, the only downside is i have to renew it again next year as i reach 70 then.
July 16, 2020 at 10:42 pm #119283I hope it’s sorted soon Tomthumb.
Your car looks gorgeous. Great choice.
Happy motoring………when you can! ?? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?
July 16, 2020 at 10:56 pm #119288It’s not like I’ve had my license suspended & had a driving ban,
but 18 mth’s of driving without a valid license has got my stomach in a right old knot.Tom…
July 16, 2020 at 11:09 pm #119289do it as soon as possible They should have sent you a letter to renew it
have you moved house ?
July 16, 2020 at 11:38 pm #119294
AdeI cant remember getting a reminder, I just made a note of the expiry date. Everything should be done online nowadays. I’ve never heard of anything bad happening because someones was driving with an expired license. If plod pulled you over he would just remind you to renew it.
The old one was valid until you were 65…then they brought out the photo licenses and they required renewal every 10 years…just to make some dosh.
On the plus side, big shiny new thing is awaiting….looking gawjus….
July 17, 2020 at 12:02 am #119295Did not move house & don’t remember any renewal letter.
I did try the online renewal route Adam, but it came back with I cannot renew online, I need to submit a D2 form instead.
I followed the link for the online form download, but you think I could find it? Hell no.
A quick google on the elusive D2 form showed reference to commercial vehicle licenses, that I do indeed hold still, but no longer want or need, so maybe that is the reason for the online kick back.
A call to dvla tomorrow & fingers crossed.

July 17, 2020 at 12:41 am #119297lol some interesting and mixed advice,
tomthumb Dont ignore this, im assuming the dealership did a licence check or you had a named driver with you with a valid licence as they should never of let you drive off without it, its not a case of a few more days/week wont matter or the “plod take no notice” it can invalidate your insurance and make you liable (fault or no fault) it is very unlikely but possible, it can also carry a fine upto £5000. if its not possible to renew online ( i think they have a within 30 day or 3 month rule or something) then my advice is to send it via the post office where you can pay a few quid for them to pre check the application, also do a “licence checker” with the DVLA or what ever its called this week, this will give a number valid for i think 21 days showing your upto date licence details and handy to have with you whilst awaiting a renewed licence. just in case.
it is nothing to worry about and a simple call to dvla will put your mind at rest . in the meantime do the licence check/share thingy. https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence, good luck & nice car
July 17, 2020 at 8:05 am #119303So close, yet so far away to get to drive your new car. Your best bet as @JS said, is the post office. It has to be a main post office for that service though.
I have to renew my licence every 3 years because of medical problems. Its due next year.

The post office check & send only refers for use with a renewal letter,
So I’m still in the dark as to what forms I need to obtain & complete / when can I legally drive / will my license will be valid from the date of application or valid from the date of its return.
The wait continues
July 17, 2020 at 10:04 am #119317Good news, I finally managed to get in touch with dvla & they stated I am still safe to drive. I did have to ask twice tho, as the response was that my entitlement to drive expires in 2034, it was just my category C hgv entitlement & my photo ID that had expired last year.
Hopefully the same reason why my license didn’t raise a red flag with the motability car order, the mb & private car insurance over the last 12mth’s.
So even if I didn’t have the class C, my actual driving license expired last year but I’m still ok to drive.
Even now that doesn’t make sense, but what do I know!
I still need to complete a D2 form to remove my class C entitlement & renew my license, but the online driving license renewal did state this & provided a link to the online document download page, but dvla said this form is not available online so they are sending 1 out,
So happy motoring it is.

July 17, 2020 at 11:32 am #119335mine run out a couple of weeks ago, applied on line and received it a few days later, they sent an email back straight away for coformation to state my license was being renewed and asked for my passport number to use the photo off it, the only downside is i have to renew it again next year as i reach 70 then.
Same boat here but I was lucky, if you can call it that, because my license had to be changed when I became disabled in 2008 and had no choice but to change to the photo license at a cost to myself that I was not happy about because my paper license ran out in 2021 and had lasted 40 years with no cost but going back to the lucky bit is that the 2008 photo license expired in 2018 and its exactly 3 years to when I hit the Motorway speed limit and have to renew again. Every Cloud.?
Tom’s out in his new motor right now and I guess he will excuse me for the long post, he won’t mind I’m sure.?
Have fun Tom.?
July 17, 2020 at 3:12 pm #119373The healthy option of walking to go post my renewal letter to the dvla never even crossed my mind.
Don’t mind 1 bit ChrisK & thanks for everyone’s help & advice.

Kevin AndrewsI sent my license renewal around April 2021 I’m diabetic so needs renewing every 3 years. I’m still waiting for it to be returned now Oct . Motorbility have written telling me to start looking for my new car but need my licence . DVLA told me I can still drive unless my Dr tells me different .
What do I do .
October 18, 2021 at 1:34 pm #166958DVLA have a massive back log at the moment and a possible strike looming.
UK driving licences have an expiry date but as long as you have sent off your renewal to the DVLA – and you have not been told by a medic, optician or the courts to stop driving for any reason, you can continue to get behind the wheel. However, those whose licence was revoked by a court or for medical reasons – but have been told they can resume – can’t drive until it has been physically reissued.

GeorgieThis might help provide a clue to the current delays/timetable of future delays:
I sent my renewal forms (3 yr Short-term Medical Driving Licence) to the DVLA at the start of March. Received a letter to confirm arrival of my application in the middle of March. My Specialist confirmed he’d sent the requested info. to the DVLA at the end of March.
I rang the DVLA at the end of July asking ?! and was told the delay was due to a lack of Medical teams available to assess the medical details, and he had no idea how long I would still have to wait.
Received a letter from DVLA on Friday (15/10) saying my application has been successful, but because they’ve spent so long processing my application the photo now had to be updated – and if I failed to provide one within 14 days they would “assume” I no longer wanted to renew my licence! (Posted the form and photo this morning.)
So, basically, 7 1/2 months + ? extra time for updating the photo.

GeorgieOh, and remember you can only drive under Section 88 of the Road Traffic Act for 12 months from the date the DVLA receive your renewal application form, NOT from the date at which your current Licence runs out!
My licence ran out in May 2021, but I can only drive under Section 88 until the start of March 2022, because that’s 1 year from the date I sent the renewal forms.

WarkmanRather lije the passport, the owner of the driving licence is responsible for ensuring its valid and in date.
the reason for ten year renewal is tgat peopkes faces can change, plus without the old inbeficient paper licence, it stops the criminals driving on it., renting cars etc.
Try having a 3 year renewable licence. The good thing is tgat the same photo on record for my passport is used on my driving licence
October 19, 2021 at 1:50 pm #167053still got my old paper licence without pic. and no passport these days. lol

tim clarkI have recently moved house and therefore had to change from a paper licence to a photo one, no passport so duplicate birth certificates signed photos etc what a palaver sent it all off 6 weeks ago not a dickie bird, no acknowledgement nothing, as a former civil servant I find Govt depts are not anywhere near as efficient as they once were.
