Anyone use the Dartford Crossing? I’ve read you don’t need to do anything if your vehicle is registered as tax exempt? How does this work in practice, any issues?

That would appear to be true Jojoe, this is what Motability say….
Dartford Crossing
A282 Trunk road Dartford, Essex
Disabled motorists may cross without charge if they are travelling in a vehicle which is exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). You do not need to register or present any documentation as your number plate will be picked up by automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. Please be aware that motorists who receive Standard Rate PIP and therefore are eligible for a 50% reduction in road tax are not exempt from any charges.
If you have a Motability Scheme vehicle and receive a penalty charge for not paying the Toll please contact the Motability Scheme as it is possible that your vehicle details were not recorded properly by the dealer.

August 7, 2022 at 4:20 pm #193237No issues at all, done it quite a few times now since they changed from the old style payment tolls booths. You just drive Threw now and anpr camera’s record your reg pretty much like the congestion charge in london in the beginning you had to register but now it’s automated any scheme car or a car that the road tax is registered as disabled is exempt.
Recently my brother bought a used mb car and although he change road tax it still was on there system still as except he contacted dart charge and they said until the get notifcation they do not charge.
You can got to there page to pay the charge and if car is exempt https://www.gov.uk/pay-dartford-crossing-charge it will come up as so and will not allow you to pay.
I know this as on two recent trip to see my brother my reg was saying exempt even though i’d taken off my private and put the original plate back on the scheme car.
Then i got my brand new car off the scheme and had normal road tax while i waited for the new certificate to come and the private plate was on that and it would not allow me to pay.

August 7, 2022 at 5:45 pm #193243I’ve been over a couple of times and haven’t had to do anything. Just drove over the bridge and never heard anything. They use ANPR, so it is a lot easier than other crossings where you have to register first. We live near the Tamar and to cross from Cornwall to Devon you have to pay a toll (either on the bridge or ferry). The hoops one has to jump through to get free crossings is not worth the trouble if you only cross a few times a year (it only costs £2 for a car).

Sally PurseyI have tried to add my new car to my account and it states that this vehicle is exempt. It was a motability car but I have just bought it. I cannot find how I can get this changed. Can you advise please?
May 16, 2023 at 8:40 am #221522I think it will happen automatically when the disabled tax exemption expires. But you’re probably best speaking with DVLA.

Yep got that, love the M6 Toll it’s like a private road, always very quiet and nice service area. Love the way they use number plate recognition now, the barrier automatically raises as you approach.

Gary VBeen over numerous times, when it changed to PNC I did check with them, never had an issue.
FYI you can also get exemption for Humber Bridge but you need to fill form in on their website and it takes a few days then is valid for 12 months. You then use the Tag lane.
