So I rang specialist cars of Aberdeen today to ask about the Cupra Born and Cupra in general and I was told by the man that answered the phone that Cupra wasn’t planning to add their cars to the scheme at the moment. This is a bit annoying that they won’t be adding their cars as I was hoping they would be bring the Born to us. The man seemed very sure of the answer but I might try phoning Cupra UK to double check. I’ll make a new post one I have an update.

No chance unfortunately. Their target audience just isn’t motability customers. Lovely car though
December 18, 2021 at 6:15 pm #172004Hi John, I agree with your statement, they are a very trendy company and I’m in their target audience as I’m only 31 but I can see why they wouldn’t want to come to the scheme.

Yeah, while i do think the Cupra Formentor and the Born would be good additions, i can’t see Cupra doing a deal with Motability. And i can’t really blame them either.
In fact, it might be for the better as well, less ammo for the daily fail crowd to cry murder over our free luxury sedans/sports cars.

Yeah the last thing I want is the The Daily Fail to start poking around again.

December 18, 2021 at 6:56 pm #172009Quite so, Rene. However, the Flail will never get on the case even if Cupra did want their excellent cars on the scheme. Their range seems to feature heavily on being enjoyable to drive. Motability would never agree to that!

Companies that deal with people with disabilities tend to forget that people of all ages can be disabled, there’s lots of stuff for kids or for people of an advanced age but people like me(31 years old) tend to be forgotten. I’d love motability to have just a few “fun” vehicles on the scheme. I’m not talking hot hatches or AMG cars but some that are just “fun”. I love the scheme and it’s helped me a lot and meant that I could make awesome memories with my wife and dog.

December 18, 2021 at 7:36 pm #172014It’s worth watching Fifth Gear Recharged episode 3 as they test the Cupra Born against a petrol Cupra. The petrol Cupra was significantly quicker and even though they are very pro EV’s they rated petrol overall as the best propulsion for a hot hatch. In the same episode they also tested the VW ID3 which seemed to have a bit of a mixed review.

Just out of interest, what cars would you put in the fun catergory? I’m a similar age to you and there always used to be plenty of cars I liked on the scheme. I had to rule a lot out as they were too difficult to get in/out of but they were there. Obviously I’m talking prior to 2020

I’d probably put the Toyota gr86, the Hyundai i30n(it’s a big car but sporty-ish) the Hyundai kona N, maybe some of the bigger Alfa Romeo’s. I know ride quality diminishes with sportiness but some cars with better ride handling would be nice.

December 18, 2021 at 9:26 pm #172021It has to include the Rexton, a real proper SUV.

@fwippers is the Rexton a new model being released. Never heard of it. Did a Google search but not much showing.

December 19, 2021 at 9:30 am #172033I think it’s a bit of a stretch to put the i30n etc into the fun category and not the hot hatch category. They’re definitely hot hatches.
I could see the gr86 (gt86) being on possibly but I wonder if that’s anything to do with the numbers they’re produced in and whether Toyota don’t want to produce loads.
When I got my last car in 2017 there were things like the Golf gtd, Leon FR, Focus ST (diesel) 2 series coupe, 3 series, gulia etc. Plenty to choose from I thought. They’re probably considered as “warm hatches” these days but they’re still fast and fun to drive in my opinion.
I hope that once the car industry sorts itself out we’ll see things like that again although we could be in a bit of a transition to the hybrid/electric “fun” cars (not that many out there yet and they’ll be in high demand) so it might take a bit of time for them to work their way onto the scheme
December 19, 2021 at 9:38 am #172034Nearly went for the Alfa Giulia when it was on the scheme. Really wish that I had. Got a Mini hatch Cooper S. That is a seriously “fun” car. Laugh-out-loud enjoyable as long as your vertebrae can survive the so-called “suspension”!
December 19, 2021 at 9:45 am #172036I forgot about the Cooper S. I really like them. My friend has a Cooper S 5dr and he loves it. I’ve been in it and they’re fast and have loads of grip. The interior is brilliant too.
I had to cross them off my list as they’re just a little bit too low for me to drive every dayDecember 19, 2021 at 10:04 am #172037I was lucky that the geometry of the Mini just about worked for me. Certainly low down but I could get in and out without pain. Got the three-door one, having tested the five-door. Told that the suspension was the same. It ain’t. The shorter wheelbase and nasty low-profile tyres make for a sold, uncomfortable ride. The adjustable suspension – an extra – is useless. Two settings 1) bricks and 2) very hard bricks. Understand that smaller wheels and, hence, higher profile tyres make it much less painful. This can be done on Motability by specifying a lower grade of car but you then have to buy extras to get basic things like parking sensors. Moreover, it’ll cost more than the high-grade models and you’ll lose out on GCB too.
December 19, 2021 at 10:31 am #172038Yes I can imagine the ride comfort not being the best. I moved from a Leon SE Copa to an FR in 2015 and on poor surfaces I thought the ride was uncomfortable. Not uncomfortable to the point I couldn’t drive it though. I paid a bit extra for 18 inch wheels then spent pretty much the whole time I had the car wishing I hadn’t. It was really nice to drive on nice roads but unfortunately there aren’t many of those around!
December 19, 2021 at 10:37 am #172039I’m moving from a 2019 Hyundai Ioniq and as great as it is for mpg and hybrid driving its a very boring car that I’m sure a taxi driver would love. I’m due to change my car in march so I’ll have to wait and see if anything fun gets added.

December 19, 2021 at 10:49 am #172040I hope you’re able to find something that ticks as many boxes as possible.
March could be difficult as I can’t see too much changing between now and then but I hope I’m wrong. I’ll have no choice but to make a decision on my car just a few months after thatDecember 19, 2021 at 11:15 am #172044I’m moving from a 2019 Hyundai Ioniq and as great as it is for mpg and hybrid driving its a very boring car that I’m sure a taxi driver would love. Funny you should say that. I was looking at the Ioniq with one of my daughters the other day as her car is coming up to 6 years old and I’m thinking that we should start considering a change. She loved the Infinity sound system but her partner put her off by saying that she would be constantly approached by people asking if she was an Uber driver!
Do any of you younger folk know if the Bose sound system (that the i20 Ultimate) has is better or worse than the Infinity system? It has the same number of speakers but the Bose system has a subwoofer and the Infinity system an external amp, neither of which means anything to me. She wants a really good sound system in her next car.
December 19, 2021 at 11:29 am #172045The Ioniq infinity system is great in my car. I’ve never once been approached by anyone thinking I’m a cab. With previous experience of a bose system I’d say they are great systems but can be a bit bass light and very neutral systems. Honestly if your daughter likes the car than she should go for it, the only reason I’m not is that it’s just a bit low for me but I’m considering staying with Hyundai and going for the Kona

Thanks. My daughter is just 28 and in the end she felt that whilst the Ioniq Premium SE ticked all the boxes kit wise, she felt that it looked too ‘middle aged’ for her. What none of us liked was the split rear screen and lack of a rear wiper. Yes there’s a rear view camera, but that’s not much use when you’re driving forward!
The dealership didn’t have any Ultimate i20’s so we couldn’t check out the Bose system. I pointed out the Kona to her but she didn’t like the look of it. We are in no rush and if she sticks with Hyundai we might wait for the next generation i30 to come out in a couple of years time. Sadly the current top spec i30 does not have an upgraded sound system, which is odd when the i20 does and that’s a deal breaker for her. That and a heated steering wheel ?
As an aside, she said one thing that really surprised me. “One thing I really don’t like Dad is this trend to touch screen controls for heating. It’s so much easier to use a knob”. I thought it was just us old duffers who had that view ?

It is very much a car that appeals to a certain sector. It is however a real SUV, capable of off road driving and lots of space. It is not particularly economical or quick, a niche car, but a pity unlikely to appear on Motability, unless there is a change in policy, which, given the state of the car market, is a distinct possibility.
December 19, 2021 at 1:39 pm #172052’tis a beast… all bow to the beast. maybe they will do an ev version.
