Collection day

So we are due to collect on Monday next week and are desperately in need of some advice and guidance. Will explain as best I can.

The dealership we are collecting from is, if traffic is bad, up to 90mins drive away from us.

My fiancée (Mother of the scheme member) is the appointee so from what I’ve read she has to be in attendance.

My fiancée doesn’t drive so I’m the nominated driver, so I have to be in attendance to drive the car away.

We have a 3yr old daughter together who is diagnosed autistic and suffers from GDD and has little to no understanding or receptive language. Both of us have estranged families that are unwilling or unable to provide childcare for the handover, so little one and car seat has to come too.

We were in A&E 2 weeks ago with the little one as she suddenly started drinking refusing which eventually culminated in a full 24hours with no liquid intake at all. Nothing physically wrong was found. When we got her home we managed to get her drinking slightly via syringing, and her drinking has now slightly improved to the point that yesterday she accepted juice from her actual juice cup. This limits our ability to be outside the house for lengthy periods of time. She has not yet accepted juice outside the house and we are terrified that if we try to force the issue on Monday that we may undo all our hard work up to this point

So to cut a long story short, we need advice as to how long the handover actually takes. What is the bare minimum I would need explained/checked to be able to drive away asap? What paperwork needs to be completed and who can actually complete it? Stuff I’ve seen online says it can take hours and we absolutely can’t do that long.

Any and all advice would be welcomed and appreciated

All my handovers have taken 15-20 minutes. I just tell them I know the car already so don’t need to go over everything. Check car out, sign, then I’m away for a good drive.

Scenic was longer because they would not accept mix of cash and card. But even then it was quick.

If you’ve picked a car and looked in to it well you’ll probably know that model better than the salesman. In out drive it about.

Edit some of my paper work was done online before I went, maybe that’s why it was quicker.

It varies, usually there’s a bit of small talk etc.

If you steam it down and the salesrep plays ball, you can cut it down to maybe 20-30 minutes. What you should do is to call your salesperson, and explain to him that you can’t do long appointments.

In terms of completing the paperwork: only the mother can (well or your partner). You’re just decoration until you drive, you can’t do anything.

The only other option is to call MB and add another driver who can take the mother to the dealership and drive the car home, like the mother. Might push back the pickup date a little bit, but i think that’s about it.

My last handover was about half hour max.

I am changing my car on Tuesday 4:30 and the journey is 13mls – but as it is Surrey traffic will be heavy  – so messaged the Motability guy to ask how long  – the admin bit can be as little as 20 mins  – assuming no bank issues – but I expect it to take over an hour as I will have a run through of car – pair app and phone etc – it’s an EV.

So my point  – ring and speak with rep – explain your concerns and that you need it to be as quick as possible – may even be worth picking another day and time for best traffic conditions – hope this helps.

Sounds like you have a lot on your plate – I wish you and yours well 👍

Alternatively you can reschedule the collection when you feel more comfortable.

                  Hi.

I have been a scheme member for 28-years now so I’d like to think I can answer your question from experience. Generally, bearing in mind all dealers can differ slightly depending on what they still need to complete their end, I would allow an hour from start to finish for the handover.

Dealers need to cross the T’s and dot the i’s paperwork-wise their end. They have to explain certain things to you, quickly check the old car you are returning before handover (if applicable in this case?), ask a few questions, etc etc and generally just go through a few formalities. You yourself need to check the new car you are taking delivery of before entering your all important pin number for damage/issues.

I don’t know about other Motability members – but personally speaking, I already know everything about the new car I am picking up – because I am very sad like that & would have done my homework extensively on the new car! I watch every video & read every article in order to know what does what, what’s this for, what’s that for! That saves me a lot of time on handover day because the Motability salesperson never needs to sit in the car with me and go through all the introduction faff.

So yeah, from personal experience, I would allow an hour. That’s more than ample in my case. Obviously your experience may well be a little different – bearing in mind the issues you state above – but try not to panic. Best of luck to you. Remember to upload a couple of photos of the car once collected!

As others have said, you could ring the dealer and request a quick handover and set the car up, pair phone etc at home yourself. You could also ask the dealer if they are willing to email paperwork for your fiancee to sign and allow you collect and enter the PIN discreetly or you could just ring Motability and explain your situation and ask if they can help in any way or authorise tou to collect it, wih an appointee disclaimer.

However, most likely your going to be stuck between a rock and place and will have to endure the procedure. Maybe, sending your fiancee to do most of the paperwork and enter the pin, whils’t you look after child and swop over, whils’t you take delivery of the car and sign the driver decleration may help.

This might actually be the best option.

Have your fiancee go with her mum, let her do all the paperwork etc while you stay at home. Ask the salesman to park the car on the customer parking lot. After all is filled out and the car is yours, have your fiancee come back and watch the kid while you go and pick up the car off the parking lot.

If you’re reasonably competent, you won’t be bathled by a new car – all the setup etc can be done in peace at home, manual in hand if necessary.
