Yes, it was a bit of a surprise to me as I’m still looking after my Autistic adult son.
However, as the underlying entitlement to it continues you should get a Pension Credit top up for it (as I now do).
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

As far as I’m aware is if your alreasy claiming PIP/DLA before retirement age it will continue. Attendance allowance on the otherhand is claimed if you are taken ill/disabled after retirement age and have never been in reciept of PIP or you PIP award stopped prior to retirement and you chose to claim after retirement Attendance allowance. I am 99.9% sure both cannot be claimed together!
June 10, 2023 at 11:27 am #223262This is getting interesting, so Phaedra what does “Pension Credit top up” look like?
Kezo so PIP/DLA definitely continues after retiral?

Pension credit is a top up to the state pension, to give you a minimum guaranteed income if you qualify for it.
As I’m disabled and also a carer I get an extra £416.92 added to my pension every month.
Information is here,
https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit-calculator
https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit
Sooner you apply the better, you can do it up to 4 months before you reach retirement age.
I sent an email to adviceline@carersuk.org listing what benefits I was receiving before reaching retirement age and they worked out what I would get.

I am sure there are many who’s working life has been disrupted due to illness, what payment might you expect receive if you have worked for a small number of years before leaving due to ill health.
Is there a minimum amount you would recieve if you’ve never worked?
How does your pension payment affect PIP/DLA ?

As far as I know I’m getting full state pension. I don’t have any private/works pension income.
As for PIP/DLA no, it doesn’t have any adverse affect on state pension, just the opposite ?
Being in receipt of either of them means you should qualify for the pension credit guaranteed income top-up ?

June 13, 2023 at 5:45 pm #223472Worked all my life until having massive heart attack circa 1999. Worked for the local authority as a Social worker. So was retired on ill heath grounds in 2001 with full superanation pension.
Now retired at 66 on full state pension, + full superanation pension which I have been drawing from 2001 + PIP. + Industrial injuries benefit all though at reduced rate sincce taking state pension. So no Pension credit for me.

You need 10 year of national insurance contributions to get the minimum “new” state pension. If you have contributed less than 10 years you wouldn’t be entitled to the “new” state pension. However its possible you will be entitled to pension credit.
Various benifits give you national insurance contibutions but not PIP/DLA as they are not means tested, where as ESA would for example and carers allowance….
June 16, 2023 at 2:11 pm #223620I was on Pension Credit when I reach pension age and my wife was receiving the Carers Allowance as she had done since I became disabled and she had to stop work to look after me. She did carry on for a couple of years in her old job but with local council cuts and myself having accidents like trips and falls at home trying to do things I can no longer do she thought it best to give up working and keep a closer eye on me.
When my wife / carer reach her pension age the PC and the CA stopped that day because our two combined state pensions was above the amount they said we needed to live on.
The letter to my wife from the DWP at the time of here retirement said “although the DWP has stopped paying you CA you are still my carer and can continue doing so.” Isn’t that ever so kind of them. ?
June 17, 2023 at 1:49 pm #223669@ChrisK have you reapplied for pension credit?
It may be worth emailing the Carers association in the link I posted earlier. As you say the underlying qualification to carers allowance still continues so you should get a top up.

June 17, 2023 at 2:51 pm #223670Hi Phaedra,
TBH in a way I was glad to see the back of Pension Credit with the DWP what seem to me, looking over my shoulder and wanting to rifle through my bank and savings accounts.
My saving took its toll when I went from over the average wage take home pay down to poverty benefits that were less than a 25% of what I was use to before becoming disabled over night.
It’s only now without PC that I’ve been able to save up for the AP on a suitable car and nice car because you could guarantee while saving, for instance, the £4K plus I needed for my current car the DWP would out of the blue ask to see my bank statement and with £4K plus rainy day savings laying around in there before the car was available they would stop the PC because I was too rich to qualify as it were.
June 17, 2023 at 3:46 pm #223673I know that feeling, my Autistic sons bank account is a joint account so I can keep an eye on things, I always worry someone will think it’s my money in there!
Had a call from the car accident solicitor, because of the heart and brain damage he’s talking about me needing some long term support due to living on my own, he says it should be a “substantial” award. So now worried what it will do to my pension etc.
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

Hi Phaedra, I had an accident a couple of years ago and claimed compo. At the time a solicitor advised me (Mark Thompson law) to put the money in a trust, so it wouldn’t affect any of my money. It cost £500 to set up and DWP/HMRC can see it but, the money is not taken into account when working out any entitlements.
June 17, 2023 at 5:31 pm #223682That sounds worth looking into, thanks ?
Kids will be getting it anyway, can’t think of anything I want ?

Yes same here it goes to my wife for the care of our Autistic daughter, if mrs kezo passes it goes straight to our daughter in trust so it doesn’t affect anything she will be entitled to claim, as will never beable to work with her Autism and disability.
Certainly worth looking into 🙂
Forgot to add – if you were to draw out of it into your current account, that part then counts as income or whatever you want to call it.

June 17, 2023 at 6:35 pm #223692Could do with a last trip to the USA to take my son to see his only friend who now lives in Mobile. Only problem is my health will probably prevent me flying again, will have to see what’s said about the MRI head scan and also check with the heart team. A trans-Atlantic cruise would be less risky but more expensive?
