car tax advice

My wife has higher rate mobility. This year for the first time in 15 years, we are thinking of going away from motability to normal PCP (purely to get a car not on the list).  We suggested the dealer should not include vehicle road tax in the deal because of my wife’s entitlement. But he said the process was that we should reclaim the tax cost after receiving the car.   I can’t find anything online about reclaiming road tax  after registration – only claiming exemption beforehand. Is he correct or are we being spun a line? Not sure of anyone has any experience in this? – thanks in advance…..   any help welcome.

I was looking at getting a more expensive car which wasn’t on the scheme and was told by the dealer that they do it for you

best thing to do is call the dvla and ask them, details are

        DVLA vehicle tax enquiries
        Telephone: 0300 790 6802
Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm
        Saturday, 8am to 2pm

Please update us with the outcome

While I was waiting for my appeal I had to tax my PCP car, it was before the recent tax increase so only cost £30pa. When I won my appeal I took the V5 to the post office and they sorted it out, I didn’t get a refund, but as it was such a small amount I wasn’t worried.

New car road tax is a fair bit now but as you can pay by direct debit you should only be out one month’s payment at the worst, as the disabled V5 only takes a couple of weeks to come through.

I’m sure the dealer should supply your evidence of exemption on first registration of the vehicle.
I’d guess the dealer doesn’t deal with many disabled buyers off the scheme?

As surely if that was the case all of us would need to pay for road tax then claim it back, on the scheme too?

Thinking about it the first time I claimed my exemption I didn’t receive a refund in outstanding road tax on our car.

Dealer is being a lazy arse, or just incompetent, just had a friend do it and she took proofs into the dealer and he sent them off to DVLA and she picked up the car with her free disabled class taxation done.

Tell the rep to pull his finger out and check what is his responsibility, take your evidence for them to copy(or just take copies) and refuse to sign for the car until it’s sorted, once the dealer principal finds out a sale isn’t going through because one of his reps can’t be bothered then things will get done.

Thanks folks  – I went back to my contact at the dealer – and he admitted it was not his speciality – So on Monday he will meet with their motability specialist for advice – and if necessary contact DVLA for guidance.

I am 99.999% we simply hand him the exemption in advance and he will apply – simples!

It will cause him a self-inflicted headache to re-do the finances though since presently  the deal includes car tax, despite my mentioning the exemption before we placed the order.  At least it’s moving now.

                  Cheers

                    What car are you getting?

I know it’s not the topic but I’m curious.

The dealers being lazy, surely he can take off the cost of road tax without needing a math degree.

If you do it his way I’m pretty certain dvla won’t refund you, the exemption will just keep rolling.
