is the car a large suv or is it a mid size Suv.
motability advertise cars /suv as large cars or suvs yet when you look at the car dealers website they call it a mid size suv or something like that .
some example :-
nissan qashqia
hyundai tucson
kia sportage
vauxhall grandland
some of these cars you cant swing a cat in (i now iv tried ) but motability call them big
sometimes when something is small its nice when people think its big , but just not these cars
or is it just me

La pregunta es ¿qué tan grande es grande? The question is how big is big? I drive a Tucson and would say it is a medium size SUV. A large SUV would be something Like an X5, XC90, or even Rexton. It´s a subjective thing.
April 7, 2022 at 6:42 pm #182231All those cars you mention are midsize SUV’s irrespective of what Motability calls them. The Sportage & Tuscon are slightly larger mid size SUV’s but in no way classed as large.
April 7, 2022 at 6:46 pm #182232Motability always exaggerate the size of the SUV’s. I tend to go more by motor industry classifications. Almost all the SUV’s remaining on the scheme are small / compact SUV’s. At a bit of a stretch, some might just be nudging mid size with a bit of creative thinking. None are even remotely close to large, in spite of what Motability claim.
My guess is that the person doing the Motability classifications is a bloke. Apparently us chaps can be prone to exaggeration when it comes to size matters ??

April 7, 2022 at 7:32 pm #182237the motability search is a nonsense in this respect, before they disappeared bmw i3 was listed as medium car not small suv, likewise vauxhall mokka, the kia soul apparently is an mpv not a small suv. there are others too.
it makes it a real drag when i am searching as apart from automatic the only other thing i need is to be able to get in/out with a high seat position so i still have to trawl through aload of normal saloons to see whats new.
April 7, 2022 at 7:50 pm #182238The Honda HRV is classed as a large SUV yet can only fit 2-3 large suitcases.
Is it me?
April 7, 2022 at 7:52 pm #182239The Kia Soul is an interesting one. When I’ve seen them on the road I have assumed that they are SUV’s. However, we parked alongside one the other day and I was shocked to see how small it looked in comparison to our BMW X1 (which, even though Motability classed as a large SUV, is a small SUV). It looked more like a boxy hatchback, if that makes sense. So, in Motability’s defence (for once) I can sort of see why it’s not classed as an SUV!

riconissan qashqia – WTF no way, I got one of these as cover, the room with me in and son in seat was same as kona between his legs and my seat………… this is one of those jacked up hatchbacks… that seat in my position means my head and shoulders are only visible in back window so quite funny really with tinted windows.
hyundai tucson = I would say quite large
kia sportage = as above
vauxhall grandland – same as qashqia

The HRV is 4.3mtrs long similar to the rest of the mid size SUV’s . A large SUV would be anything over 4.6mtrs, so guess we could include the CRV as being the entry point to a large SUV

Our X1 is 4.47m long but I’d still consider it to be a small, not medium, SUV. I’d say 4.6m is about the start point for medium SUV’s and probably 4.9m and above large. So, to continue the BMW SUV analogy, the X1 is a small SUV, the X3 a medium SUV, the X5 a large SUV and the X7 is a humongous SUV ?
April 7, 2022 at 10:41 pm #182250Actually, I think I might revise my definition of ‘large’ SUV down to 4.8m as I’ve just checked the dimensions of SUV’s that I would consider to be large and a couple of them are just below 4.9m. FWIW, SUV’s that I would consider to be large include the following, none of which are likely to appear on Motability any time soon, sadly!
Audi Q7 & Q8
BMW X5 & X7
Hyundai Santa Fe
Kia Sorrento
Range Rover Sport / Velar / Range Rover
Lexus RX
Mercedes GLE
Ssanyong Rexton
Toyota Highlander
Volkswagen Touareg
Volvo XC90
Given that Motability call small SUV’s large SUV’s, they would be truly stumped as to how to categorise any of the above should they ever appear ?
April 7, 2022 at 11:27 pm #182254I agree with @Glos with is list of large SUV’s
April 8, 2022 at 2:27 am #182255Ford > small > medium > large.
Puma (fiesta based)
Kuga (focus based)
Edge (mondeo based) dont do this in Uk anymore.

Midsize for the XC40
April 8, 2022 at 11:38 am #182304I think Motability use the Fiat 500 as a benchmark for judging large cars.

Ok, so I fully accept I am being pedantic, but at just 4.4m the XC40 is Volvos small SUV, the XC60 is medium and the XC90 large ?

Not pedantic at all. Personally I would say small is 4.1m to 4.4m Medium 4.4m to 4.6m and large 4.7m and over. Obviously there is going to be slight overlap I.E the Ateca would fall into medium although it is just below 4.4m.
I also think a vehicles wheel base determines what class it would fall into and whether someone or indeed manufacturers class categories as compact, small, medium and large or simply small, medium and large.
Volvo could therefore say the XC20 is compact, XC40 small XC60 medium and XC90 large. /On the other hand PSA group could say the 2008 is small the 3008 medium and the 5008 large. Seat Arona small, Ateca medium and Terraco large etc etc.
Although like many of us believe MB is way of with its interpretation.
