What with 20mph limits, Police vans day and night, over head gantries on motorway, variable speed cameras,  smart  motorways, zero tolerance, and the increasing dash cam cameras where the Police encourage the public to send in footage of drivers to a website which they view with the intent of sending out Notice of intended prosecution (NIP) my question is:

Bearing in mind that 30mph is safe but 31 is dangerous (technically) and the obvious answer don’t break the law,  do you think it is possible to go your whole driving life without getting points on your licence?

        Its possible but difficult.

I’m points free since I passed in 1988.

I dont hang about when I’m driving

Fingers crossed, touch wood, and not trying to tempt providence, but hubby and myself have had no points, he still drives but I stopped around 10 years ago. He passed his test in 1970 and I did in 1973.

I got my first 3 points within weeks of passing my test in 1988, I then more or less had 3 points for the next 10 years. Since then I’ve grown up, calmed down and despite still driving 50-70k miles per year not had any issues, touch wood and all that malarkey.

If I seem a little strange, that's because I am.

Ive never had a point on my license or had an at fault insurance claim. So yes it is possible.

But I had intensive driving instruction and also had to pass an advanced driving test with work.

I also have speed camera alerts and road sign recognition on the in car sat nav, that helps a lot.

Penalty points are only penalties for being caught, not for committing the offence. if every offence was caught and penalised we would have no cars on the road!!!!

There is a balance that the police observe to penalise sufficient offenders to act as a deterrent ( and a good revenue stream) and not so many as to cause Protest

DH has been driving for 35+ years with 0 points on his Licence.  And he certainly doesn’t hang around.  I’ve only been driving for 8 years – so far, so good.

                  I hope I haven’t jinxed us now! 🙂

Speaking of ‘points and fines’ – I found out the other day that F1 driver Sabastian Vettel holds the Record for shortest F1 career before earning a penalty – 6 seconds.  Nabbed for Speeding in the Pit Lane on the way out from the Team Garage to the Grid on his first race.

                    Man does love his records.

If your driving is up to par there’s nothing to get caught for.

As for speeding, here In London pretty much all roads are 20mph now with cameras all over.

Going on an an A road or motorway at the sped limit feels like warp speed.
