Currently on Sky basic tv and 37mb internet is crap, my HP Proliant server struggles. Thinking going back to VM for internet 200mb maybe basic TV aswell.

Has anyone got a Aura freeview box (records 6 channels to keep mrs happy) that can shed any light on how they perform.

Your views on Sky or VM and who’s on what.

Don’t need movies or sports as able to get them ?

      Any info grateful

I had this dilemma when my last Sky contract was up. I had the ability to get sports elsewhere ? but really like the Sky Q platform. I was thinking of a 4k freesat box as it could plug directly into current Sky Q dish. I did the maths, including paying for the new box and a decent VPN ?,  I didn’t think it was worth the hassle. Got 58mb BB, Sky sports, movies, cinema, go, all channels bar kids and Ultra HD for around £59 a month.

Virgin for the internet. Don’t think we could go back to sky as a family without feeling it as we get 0ver 400 Mbps.

I’ve been a long time Sky customer , I love the Sky Q interface and how reliable and easy it is to operate

on the same note I’ve always loathed VM, I know they promise the Earth with their BB speeds but having witnessed some friends going into meltdown over the years with the amount of times their service drops, the poor customer service and general ???’ness of them I’ve always avoided

That changed about 4 months ago when all my contracts were coming to an end

Sky Q for Tv and BT for BB

i managed to get the exact same package i had with Sky , all the channel, sports, movies , HD , 2 boxes , blah blah and with 1gb BB for about £70/£80 less than I was paying Sky and BT so I bit the bullet and jumped ship

is it as good? Nope lol , but you get used to it and for the saving especially now with everything going on it’s something I can live with ?

tbh I’ve not have too many drops BB wise and that 1gb speed is mightily impressive , the times it has dropped have been sooooo annoying as it’s usually been in the middle of an important game on my PS5 ?

I also got 2 unlimited 5g sims, unlimited calls, texts and data which I guess could always come in handy

I have tried one and the signal is crap compared to EE but 2 freebies to keep in a drawer incase of an emergency I guess

so my take on it is , it’s not on the same level as Sky or BT in terms of reliability, Customer Service , Picture Quality or user interface

but if you can get a good deal price wise then it’s hard to beat in that respect ??

Thanks all goin back with VM as they have thrown alot extra in for free including gig internet. I was always happy with their internet as seldomely had any drop outs unlike with sky superfast.

My experience has been quite the opposite of Winston’s. Found VM telly so much better than SKY although have been on Sky for some nine years now (Virgin not available in “new” house area). Sky TV reception can go wonky very easily (even high winds). Regularly loses WiFi connection to hub. Should reload automatically but, no, have to go through long, involved routine on telly to get it working again. Helpline and fault-finding internettery just useless. Most of all though, Sky audio on ALL channels is utterly rubbish. Even buying and using a sound bar has been no improvement. Sky box has a wide range of settings to click on for audio. All sound the same – indecipherable. Have to have subtitles on all the time to make any sense of most programs. Use BT for broadband, never had any problems. Wish Virgin would extend service to my area; would switch instantly.

Problem we had with bt broadband was as a family our usage was mainly when the kids got in from school and after work so peak time. We had an unlimited connection but they throttled down our connection at peak times as they said we was having excess usage or whatever the exact term they call it was i forget. The rest of the day except for hols it was not used at all. Not had any of that with virgin or sky when we had it. Safe to say I’d never get bt bb ever again and it wasn’t the cheapest option either at the time.

I’m with Virgin media too. Their operating system in nowhere near as good as sky. It’s got quite a poor layout but once you get used to it, it’s not the end of the world and I agree with Winston in that if you can get a good deal it’s worth the sacrifice.
I have the 1gb internet and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it get to anywhere near that speed but it’s still really fast and I’ve never had any problems with it.

i will be keeping an eye on things such as sky glass because I like the idea of it but want to see how it grows and what competition it gets

The only thing putting me off Sky Glass is the thought of being tied to Sky. I negotiate with them every 18 months and always get a good deal. Once you have paid for Sky Glass they know you can’t go elsewhere and they’ll be reluctant to offer deals on the channels, you’ll be paying full price for Sport and Movies.

@DBtruth was with VM before I moved to Sky mainly for bb. They have said I will get the 360 box, which essentially I don’t expect any difference to the v6 box.

Even if we got full gig speeds we wouldn’t need any where near it, I’m a heavy bb user and have a server in the loft.

There are a lot of bad reviews around for sky glass, more than likely down to infancy. Much prefer my own TV for various reasons plus you aren’t tied as @Jojoe says.

I will be setting my VPN back up as I stream alot, more so than watching live tv but at least my mrs can record the soaps.

@Jojoe I’ve heard the same about sky glass and I also think it’s down to infancy as @kezo says which is why I’d like to see how it develops. See what rival systems are introduced or maybe something new entirely. Who knows.

                              @kezo
I upgraded from v6 to 360 but with mine it was a new router and just a software upgrade for the v6 box with a new remote. The voice control on the 360 is decent and the menus are fiddly when going the long way round so if you can use voice control great. Like I said further up, once you get used to the menus it’s not that big of an issue really. There’s also a couple of other handy features but I’ll not spoil the surprise for you.

I think the likes of sky and Virgin are going to have to look into this long term contract thing. All the other streaming sites can be activated/cancelled a month at a time which is much better for customers I think.

probably not as good for companies like Netflix who recently reported a drop in subscribers. Hardly surprising given the cost of living situation and the fact it’s really easy to cancel. Makes sense that it’s one of the first things people will get rid of

I’ve just read the reviews of Sky Glass, they’re pretty appalling. I forgot it didn’t record, that’s a big no for me. A family member has it and he loves it, but his TV was pretty basic before that so I think he likes the TV more than the Glass platform.

Sky Glass does not set out to be a top end TV it is specified and priced to be a mid-market TV which it meets. It has a LCD panel with full array backlighting with a local dimming function which does not appear to be working at the moment as black bars on wide screen movies do not change with the setting.

In comparison I have just switched from a old Plasma tv that started to go faulty after 15yrs  to a top end LG Ggallery series OLED with excellent viewing angles. that better last another 15yrs or more. I’m a great beliver of seperates rather than everything crammed in to one thing.

If it is basic TV you are after you can’t go wrong with just a smart telly. No need to record, it’s all there in catch up, box sets, recommendations etc. It’s all there bar the monthly subscription to VM or Sky. The best bit is, you get to pick the telly that suits your needs and budget. @kezo, I agree, keep things seperate.

If you can find a decent Sony A1, you are laughing. Like me for the last five years.

One of biggest issues with the likes of Sky, VM or any similar platform is they have you by the bollards, where its often the case you can haggle a package deal for the same price as internet alone. My wife also still likes to record channels, hence my initial suggestion of a freeview/sat recordable box.

Is the Sony A1 a Android TV?
