My wife and I are trying to come to a decision about coming back on to the scheme and what car to go for. Having had three utterly brilliant Volvo estates through Motability (and bought the last one off them which we still run) we’d really love another, but there’s now zero chance of getting one. Sadly the smaller Volvos available on the list simply don’t have enough luggage space for the kit we unfortunately have to carry with us. We also need/want to go electric, the reduced running costs would be very welcome as we do 20k miles a year.

So far we’ve ruled out several cars, including a BMW i4 (too difficult for my wife to get into), VW ID5 (nice panoramic roof but uninspiring otherwise), Hyundai Ioniq 6 (stunning car and great value, if only it was a hatch!) and several others for various reasons.

We’ve ended up with a shortlist of three cars – the Kia EV6, the obvious Skoda Enyaq, and a car that doesn’t seem to be mentioned on here much, the Audi Q4. Our impressions of the Audi were that it felt lovely to sit in, oozed quality and had a dashboard designed with a bit of thought, without an over-reliance on a huge touchscreen that looks like it has just been plonked on the dash as an afterthought, like so many electric cars seem to have. Online reviews tend to mark down the Q4 for its lack of range and equipment, but they appear to be out of date as they mostly refer to older versions of the car. The updated 45 model now also available on the list has 282bhp and a quoted range of 329 miles which as good as or better than any of its competitors. It also has heated leather seats, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise and an electric tailgate. The £3999 AP isn’t the cheapest, but its on a par or cheaper than the Kia EV6. The luggage space isn’t quite as capacious as the Enyaq, but it’s not exactly cramped and has more litres than our Volvo estate.

So are we missing something? What are the downsides of this car? Have we overlooked a reason why it doesn’t seem to be a popular choice on this forum? Comments from owners especially welcome.

I sat in one on Saturday albeit the S Line. Nice car but I just don’t like the wheels on the Sport model and just like the Ford Mustang you can’t change them.

Aftermarket and just swop the tyre over?

        The insurance wouldn’t cover it.

        Whata shame mate.

Where is this deal? I’ve just been through the deals thread. Nothing about Audi.

There’s a deal for an extra £750 off posted on the deals section on the forum,

Looking back, the poster of this comment was talking about the Nissan, not the Audi, unfortunately!

I sat in the Audi, thought it was a lot better than the ID.4

However, I found it to be a bit cramped inside, but I am 6’5″ (and a bit) and 18 stone!.

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

I’m sure the mention of WLTP was enough not to trust what was stated.

I would hope so but why post figures that can’t be trusted? @Ant3 we tested the Q4, albeit last years model and it was excellent, didn’t order it cause in the end the SUV style isn’t for me. Between the Q4, Enyaq, IDs, Kia, Ioniq, BMW etc there was very little between them so I’d try them all, good luck ?

I couldn’t remember the “claimed” range of the 40, which the op had been watching the data on, so posted the new “claimed range” hoping they could remember what they saw on the old 40 model and beable to calculate the “claimed difference” ?

The claimed range for the old model 40 versus the new model 45 hasn’t actually changed much (321 v 329 miles). Obvs I’m not so naive as to think these figures are achievable, however Ginny Buckley on electrifying.com ran a 40 on long term test and reckoned she regularly got 280+ miles in mixed driving, so the new model should be the same or maybe even slightly better. My main point remains that the quoted range of 329 miles is as good as or better than the claimed range of its competitors.

                  Hi

I was looking at the q4 ( was a brand snob ) loved the dashboard

But then a s a wild card I drove the enaque , I dont really like the ipad dropped on the dash but £2000 cheaper loads more spec the skoda wins hands down.

I grew up making fun of skoda , how times change,  the audi feels more on a budget than the skoda , leather everywhere and a way higher spec .

As for the bmw I didn’t bother due to the AP.

I see it as I get the skoda and with the £2000 I save that’s a free holiday for me and my partner ish

Or have the audi 4 rings on the street and a lower spec .

Took a demo drive on a Audi Q4 35 e-tron (all they had on demo) didn’t like it. Wife found the ride too hard a bumpy in the rear seats, very basic specs, underpowered. Went from the Audi dealer straight onto the Kia one nearby, poped in on spec no appointment and looked around a EV6 GT line they had. Said it was fine to make an appointment and return but they could tell we were serious so they gave us a test drive straight away.

So refreshing driving the car after the Audi, felt like a drivers car, responsive, comfortable, smooth and quiet. Thought this is the car for us and ordered – 2 week delivery, when asked through in ceramic coating to seal the deal. Had the car since Monday, love both the styling and drive, not many seen on the roads, turns heads making us feel a bit special. Found the battery is running at 3.2 mi/kwh town driving over 50 mi. Not too bad seeing had the a/c on most of the time.

I agree with you on brand, I came very close to owning a Skoda Superb estate a few years ago until Covid threw a huge spanner in the works. Marque makes very little difference to us, how comfortable the seats are is far more important!

However I’m confused with your comment about loads more spec on the Skoda. The Q4 and Enyaq Suite both have leather seats (we just found those in the Audi to be more comfortable). I’m struggling to see what standard equipment the Enyaq offers that the Q4 doesn’t.

Thanks tvs, that sounds a very encouraging experience of the EV6 which remains a contender for us. I’m not surprised the Q4 35 felt underpowered, thankfully the 45 sounds very different. As @Masky quoted earlier in this thread, Q4 35 = 310Nm torque, Q4 45 = 565Nm!

I can’t see anyone wanting the old 40 model, unless they need one quick from the remaing stock.

                              Well on the skoda

You get matrix lights ( amazing) and 19 inch wheels , not even an option on the audi

The matrix light come as part of a pack on the audi

That’s just off the top of my head

And if your going for the suite  or eco suite its £2500 less than the audi

But if you find the audi to seats feel better £2500 better lol then get the audi .

I am going sportline plus and that in audi would be a 60k car

Apologies,  19 are standard on both but you cant up upgrade on the audi

The enaque sportline plus 4×4 coupe dominates the q4 in spec and value but the audi comfy but so is the skoda eco suite .

Drive both and see what yiu personally like best bearing in mind the AP and in 3 years you give it back .

I was mainly put off by the awful attitude in the ŠKODA dealership. I completely understand that other ŠKODA dealers are probably great but Audi made me feel normal and ŠKODA I felt like an unwelcome intrusion. And I don’t want to drive miles to a different town for servicing just because they’re not nice locally. Perhaps unusually in my household it’s me ( the wife) who has always been car obsessed and my husband doesn’t care as long as he fits in it and can see out ( he’s 6ft7). But I could not get the ŠKODA salesman to address me or answer my questions he kept redirecting to my husband. This is MY car. It’s MY lifeline and I don’t think  the physically able always get that.

That’s the thing, everyone seems to chant that the Q4 is out-specced by the Enyaq, so matrix headlights can’t be the only major difference, surely? Genuine question (see my original post) but I feel I’m no closer to an answer.

We’ll be test driving all three (Q4, Enyaq, EV6) and as we all know that’ll be the proof of the pudding! Thanks for all the replies so far.

Not so much these days, no. We like lots of days out, but we don’t go too far in autumn/winter, so night time driving tends to be local nip outs most of the time.

sorry to hear that, sounds like that dealer needs some training! We encountered something similar a few years ago and swapped to using a dealer in a market town who are excellent. Its about 45 mins drive away but worth it, we make a day out of it and go for lunch in the town.

As much as matrix headlights are nice, I wouldn’t get too hooked up on them, given what you said. The Audi has LED with high beam assist but, I doubt your’ll use it if you only pop the shops etc locally during autumn/winter.

Test driving the Q4 today, Ioniq 5 and Enyaq (giving them a second chance) tomorrow. I wouldn’t normally do two in one day too exhausting but the dealerships are adjacent. Id4 Monday but I may cancel that as I’m particularly bad at the minute ( also a good time to test car comfort when bad so we will see)

I had the same issue last week with my local Škoda dealer, couldn’t be bothered and rude with it, but visited one further away and they couldn’t have been any better, excellent in fact.

Just had a test drive in Q4 etron will bullet point my thoughts in case it helps

                                                    positives

                                                    • it was comfortable heated seats were fantastic lots hotter than my current outlander
                                                    • the drive was comfortable and smooth and the big wheels absorbed the bumps in a country lane with ease
                                                    • the side mirrors are huge and give great visibility
                                                    • took me seconds to learn how to navigate around the dashboard information systems they were very intuitive to follow
                                                    • the maps and apple car play were excellent displaying on the iPad type screen and also in the driver display behind the steering wheel
                                                    • the steering wheel in the model we can order is the round version not the squared off version
                                                    • the boot is electric controlled from both the key fob and the button on the boot
                                                    • boot was large slightly squared off roof which loses some space but I guess that increase efficiency
                                                    • I was getting 3 kWh per mile around town and on dual carriageway which considering I was probably a bit heavy on the acceleration and braking while I got used to it I thought was great
                                                    • the navigation system automatically tells you if the journey you’re doing needs you to charge and gives suggested charging points along the route in real time. It also adjusts your journey arrival time to include charging
                                                    • Adaptive cruise control, lane assist auto wipers auto regenerative braking
                                                    • pretty nice sound system especially as the car being electric is so quiet so it’s not competing
                                                    • the staff were all superb with me

                                                    negatives

                                                    • the front seats although fully leather, lumbar supported and heated were manual adjusted and there’s no option to have electric adjusted fitted
                                                    • the rear window was not as large and clear as I’d prefer but I soon got used to it
                                                    • the seating position is slightly lower and more difficult for me to get into compared to my giant PHEV I have at the minute but I have to accept that this will be the case with any electric SUV I switch too
                                                    • I was told only the pebble grey colour was available for free which I quite liked so didn’t bother me but might bother some
                                                    • 17/22 weeks delivery

All in all a beautiful car and I think looking back at my car history ( Audi a3, 3 different Mercedes Benz c classes, a bmw m5 sport and a Land Rover freelander ) I probably have to accept that for whatever reason marque matters to me. I cannot see why I won’t be ordering it next Saturday.

All metallic colours should be free. Mine is mythos black and I didn’t pay extra for it. The only colour which isn’t free is the special purple one.

thanks for this @masky I didn’t think it sounded right so I asked them to double check before I order next week. I particularly liked it in white. I’m still mulling about the lack of electric adjustments on the seats. It’s the only negative ( for me) but it’s quite a big one.
