Hi, I ordered an MG ZS EV Exclusive in Q1. The AP was £299. As I ordered the car less than a week ago I have not taken delivery yet.

The new Q2 price is £199, saving £100.

When I collect and pay for the car in Q2 all being well, am I right to think I should pay the new lower AP please?

No, you pay the AP that was on the car when you ordered it.

Or you cancel and reorder at £199.

if your dealers a decent sort he will let you cancel and reorder at the lower price its just paper shuffling and no skin off his nose. happens all the time.

It seems a bit crazy that the sensible option is to cancel and start again.

How would you feel if the price increased by £200, would you be happy to pay the new AP…  It’s just the way it is, a bit of a gamble.

Talk to the dealer and see if they will help (It’s always worth having that conversation before making the order in the first place), but if they aren’t willing to, would you still cancel and risk waiting even longer for your new car?  After all, it’s only £100 and yesterday you were expecting to pay that anyway!

We hear about lots of customers complaining that as a Motability customer, they don’t get treated very well, I can see sometimes why dealers feel that way if they have lots of customers continually ordering and cancelling, and then maybe leaving them with a car they have ordered but no customer, that some (Not all) ask for upfront payments and maybe don’t treat us as well as they might if we were a ‘Normal’ customer

I agree Intranicity.  Just an interesting situation. To be fair I  think the car was good value anyway really.

I have contacted the supplying dealer to see what they say.

I pick up my new car on Saturday, the price has dropped £2450 since yesterday!

I think, if it wasn’t for the fact that I had already had that deal that I would be making LOADS of calls today, and would not be happy (and probably cancel the order)

It’s a tough choice sometimes, hope your dealer either sorts the paperwork out, as in the end, we all want as cheap a deal as possible, but it could be worse!

I ordered a VW Tiguan 1.5 TSI DSG Elegance model on Tuesday AP of £1949 today the AP is £1799.

I called the dealer and he said it will still be £1949, tbh the £1949 was ok at time of order and it could have gone up. I was not willing to haggle to save £150 had it gone down a few hundred I might have cancelled and reordered.

I ordered a BMW X1 xDrive20i xLine on Monday. The AP was £2,849, off which I negotiated a £500 discount. I mentioned to the dealer that the AP might change today and they said “no problem. If it drops in price we will cancel and re-order”. The AP dropped by £100 today. As it was a small amount I decided not to remind them of their offer, however the dealer proactively emailed me at 8am to say that the AP had dropped by £100 and they would be doing as promised. I replied saying that I was happy with the price agreed, but if it was a quick job and wouldn’t affect the lead time then that was great. Instant response saying that the order had been placed already with BMW, so wouldn’t be affected and it was just an admin exercise with Motability and the £100 is better in my pocket than theirs. That’s what I call great service.

Imagine your Mr Smith who goes in one day to buy his new car, puts the orser in & the next day the price drops £500. What do you think Mr Smith the avg punter would do? They’d also gave cooling off right & various other nuts if legislation to fall back on plus they’d be less likely to get given short shrift in the first place vs a motability customer.

IMHO Motability should offer a price promise AP can’t up at time of order but if it drops they’ll honour it. Often “we” only seem to get the end of the stick with poo on it, ever increasing APs (generally), ever reducing choice etc etc I just think that given that most if us aren’t exactly rolling in it either that’s something they should offer to give some stability & help retain & reward repeat customers.

Loads of non car places offer such schemes now, even rip off merchants center parcs offer a price promise that you’re buying the cheapest break at time of booking.

Excellent point Richard. I know that some people justify the policy by saying ‘well, if the AP goes up after you order you don’t pay more, so you can’t have it both ways’. However, like you, I can think of a number of companies that now offer a ‘lowest price guarantee’ where if the price goes down you benefit from it, but obviously if the price goes up you aren’t affected. So, yes, you can have it both ways!

Given that Motability Operations makes a lot of profit out of each and every Motability lease (at least £500 from memory) and has been criticised for making excessive profits, this would be just one of several things that they could do to make the scheme more attractive. As you say, not everyone has the confidence to cancel and reorder (or can’t anyway, due to it being too late) and a lot of people have a real struggle financially. The people that I feel most sorry for this quarter are those who ordered a Volvo XC40 T5 Recharge last quarter when it has dropped around £2,200 this quarter. That would upset even the richest Motability customer!
