The washing machine is causing a flood whenever we use it. There’s a hole in the seal, I squirted water in it and it came straight out the bottom so I don’t think it’s a drain hole. I’ve watched a few videos online and it looks straightforward. Anyone done this themselves, any tips?

I have never changed a door seal or would I even bother if the machine was more than 5yrs old
imo if/when a machines door seal degrades it can be indicative of the machines age
Or perhaps it was simply a common issue with perhaps a loose wire from a bra
( Bras need to be in a bag)
In any event
Sorry as not much help and hope you get it sorted soon as its a bugger not having it up and running
Whilst on the white Goods subject
Just recently replaced most of our white goods all in one hit
Cooker/ W/machine/ and tumble dryer for one with a heat pump
Just to note for all
Heat pump dryers ( bit dearer) but worth it as they are great,
So much quieter, the room stays cooler, So more energy efficient and kinder to all types of clothes, even wool

November 13, 2024 at 10:45 am #293211It might be worth attempting a repair.
November 13, 2024 at 11:20 am #293212Tried it once. Never again lol. Need fingers like the hulk and the dexterity of a three year old. Got a man out to do it in the end. £40
November 13, 2024 at 11:35 am #293215I watched a couple of videos and they both put washing up liquid on the seal to make it slide on easier. Think I’ll give it a go, the seal is £17. Most of the white goods repair services near me charge £80 including parts.

Good luck

I’ve done a fair few over the years and as long as you have a good clear area to work on and around the machine it is normally pretty straightforward. I have had a couple of retaining springs break on me when doing older machines but I have always had spares on hand so it wasn’t really a problem, but I guess it would delay things if you only had the new rubber when doing the job. The springs that broke on me were very old.
The strip down involves removing the front retaining spring, taking the top off the machine and the control panel before then removing the front to get to the seal and the inner retaining spring. Some people advocate using washing up liquid when fitting the new seal but having tried this once I would never do it again as it makes it almost impossible to hold the seal as you try to work it over the lip and into place on the machine.
My tips would be to keep all the screws in separate little tubs. The ones from water contact areas (inside the powder drawer) are stainless and need to go back there. Make sure you put the seal on the right way up. The drain holes must be at the bottom. Don’t use anything other than water to lubricate the seal, but letting it sit in a bowl of very hot (Not boiling) water does help to fit it more easily. And finally, remember to fit the inner seal spring before re-assembling the machine. (I once did this.)
November 13, 2024 at 4:46 pm #293237Cheers @willis the hot water is a good tip. 👍 I’m not bad at diy, I replaced the motor on my Dyson and plumbed in the dishwasher myself, cutting into the pipe and adding a T junction. I’ve also replaced the elements on the oven and grill. YouTube is brilliant for diy help. The seal has been ordered, I’ll report back in a few days.
