      Just to be topical!!!

Should it be an option to replace tyres with All season type. The X1 that I have is appalling in snow and ice with the standard tyres. some manufacturers are offering these as an option, surely this should be offered to all new car purchasers. Perhaps if it was mandatory to fit them in winter (as in Germany) we would be given the choice.

There is no doubt that using winter tyres make a vast difference in such conditions. A friend who is a taxi driver swears by them.

        So from Motability web site:

Can I fit winter tyres or snow chains?

If you live in a remote area or somewhere that regularly experiences extreme weather conditions you could consider having snow tyres, chains or socks fitted to your Motability Scheme car. However, you’ll be responsible for all costs such as the cost of the tyres, fitting and storage. You will need to contact our Customer Services team to discuss this before arranging fitting.

Please ensure that the driving conditions are safe for you to make your return journey before setting out and ensure that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the product. You’ll also need to arrange for your standard tyres to refitted once the weather improves.

I have ended up having 4 all season tyres fitted at my own cost as the rubbish klap fit put on the car when they eventually are worn down to slicks are so bad in winter conditions I had to rent a car last year for the bad weather.
