      Hi

My father currently gets a vehicle through mobility, but due to health reason, he may need to hand this back over and surrender his licence.

If this is the case, I have a few questions that I wonder if anyone could offer any advice please.

      * If he does have to hand his vehicle back, will he have to make a payment for early return?

      • Instead of the vehicle, will he receive any extra financial support in place of the mobility vehicle?

      • I understand you can have additional drivers on the policy, but do they all have to be registered at the same address?

Sorry if these questions seem obvious, but I’ve never really got involved in my fathers finances regarding his mobility etc, so not sure how it works. I just want to help him out as much as possible if it does come to having to surrender his car/licence.

        Hi @john

Sorry to hear about your father’s issues. So to answer your questions:

        * If he does have to hand his vehicle back, will he have to make a payment for early return? I think in this case Motability may waive or reduce an early return payment. Usually this is £250.00

If your mobility needs have changed
If you want to end your lease early and leave the Scheme because your needs have changed, call our customer services team on 0300 456 4566 or speak to us using live chat. If we agree it’s OK to leave early, you’ll need to pay an administration fee of up to £250.

Once you’ve returned your vehicle, we’ll give you a pro rata refund of any Advance Payment you’ve paid. You might also be eligible for a pro rata Good Condition Payment.

If you paid for any optional extras when you ordered your vehicle, we will not refund these.

Instead of the vehicle, will he receive any extra financial support in place of the mobility vehicle? In lieu of his motability car he would get the £71.00 motability car payment paid into his account in lieu of the car.

If he does have to give up his licence, then contact motabilty customer service. They will advise you on option etc. You could do this now if you wished.

I understand you can have additional drivers on the policy, but do they all have to be registered at the same address? Yes you are correct about having addition drivers. No they don’t have to be registered at the same address. However. This comes with some additions. Theses are how far way the car will be kept from his home. over 5 miles it may require a tracker to be fitted. Remember the car has to benefit your farther, not other family members.

Thank you Joss for that information, that definitely answering my queries.

When you say £71 payment paid in lieu into his account, is this a one off payment or weekly/monthly?

Currently his higher rate mobility award is being paid to Motability in exchange for his car.  Stop the car he’ll get that payment himself.

When we lost my dad, there wasn’t a full time driver for my mum’s motability car so she spoke to Motability explaining the situation and handed back the car with no surrender charge.  We simply took the car back to the dealer at an agreed time and had a Motability provided taxi pick us up from the dealer and took us home.  She can now use that money to fund taxis if I’m not available to take her anywhere.

We didn’t see the point in me having my own car and her holding one in the drive for taking her places once or twice a week.  The additional money from DWP helped reduce the impact of the loss of income from pensions for dad.

Anyhow, the process is very simple, a quick phone call and it can all be arranged, last drive to a dealer and a lift home (if the main driver is no longer safe to drive then any nominated driver can take it and the Motability account holder to the dealer).  A while after the car was returned she has a payment for the good condition bonus, increased for the slightly extended lease, and her DWP payments had a correctional payment (part payment for whatever period she didn’t have the car) then returned to normal daily living plus enhanced mobility elements.

So sorry to hear of his health deterioration,  it’s tough to get a reminder that we’re all getting older and some of us less healthy.

So sorry to hear about your Dad passing ?. I do really appreciate your in-depth reply, it’s definitely put me at ease if Dad does need to hand his car back.

              Take care and thanks again.

Not alot to say other than excellent advice from from @joss and @Mfillingham.

However was in similar situation as my dad who had to temporarily give up his license a couple or so years back. Motability were great and there was no early terminaion fee (upto £250). On handing the car back, my father/parents were offered a taxi home, however my brother picked them up instead. Dad now gets £71 week (3692 year) into the bank.

My mother is lucky enough to have a lifetime DLA award and took out a Mobility car instead and dad is now a named driver since getting his licence back early this year.

Honestly, I can’t thank you all enough for your advice. I’m going to see my parents later so will let them know how we will go about it if needs be, but once again a massive thank you to you all for your replies.

                  Take care
