BlackjSo just to let the rest of the UK know. In Scotland you can vote at 16yrs of age, you can change your sex at 16yrs of age. But you cannot go to jail for rape if you are under 25 because your brain has not fully developed. This is guidance given to the crown office by the SNP. Welcome to life under the SNP.
April 18, 2023 at 10:50 am #219451There will not be one person held to account over this but, a “ring” of privileged of the upper house, who will be plucked one by one as time goes on.
In the meantime, the SNP will decend further and further into turmoil. The “infighting” will become ripe, becoming more and more unbareable as the days go by.
Members, donors along with supporters, will continue in their droves continue to remove their support.
The SNP as we know them, will ether “self destruct”, become “insolvent,” as they are chocked more and more over the coming weeks.
Scotlands dream of an independt state are just that. Let down by the greed and corruption of those in charge, who so desperately wanted it.
Only then will the good people of Sctland “nationalists” wake up and realise, it was nothing more than a bad dream, of once been supporters of a nationalist party.
Overtime Scotland will settle down, with their interests of continuing to be a valued member of the UK. Only then can we all go back to “waking” up in the morning, realising the flaming lot of the are all corrupt, regardless who we vote for. At the same time live in the comfort we are all “one”

April 18, 2023 at 11:47 am #219455From Wikipedia:
Cult is a term, considered pejorative by some, for a relatively small group which is typically led by a charismatic and self-appointed leader, who excessively controls its members, requiring unwavering devotion to a set of acts and practices which are considered deviant (outside the norms of society).
Seems about right. Then your cult promises (always soon…) to deliver to the people something they can only have by giving the cult their unwavering support and money.

April 18, 2023 at 12:08 pm #219457Good article, kezo. The Scottish media seems to have started to wake up from its SNP induced slumber.
April 18, 2023 at 12:29 pm #219459Readers letter taken from the Scotsman today: “The SNP have made it embarrassing to be Scottish”
It is indeed a sad day when you and your partner take time to reflect and declare that you are embarrassed by your nationality.
However that is where my wife and I now are. We are deeply embarrassed by the state that Scotland is now in after over ten years of divisive “independence at the forefront of every single decision we make” SNP government control.
What a mess they have created by infiltrating every sector of Scottish civil society and putting their acolytes in positions of power.
Scotland used to be regarded as an honest, fair, competent, combative and principled society with sound commercial values. The SNP has turned us into a dictatorial, lying, hypocritical and morally corrupt country run by unqualified career politicians which I am ashamed to be part of.
We are an international political laughing stock and that is a sad indictment on a country previously held in high regard in most areas of political, economic and commercial competence.

Another reader goes on about Energy secrecy and a decade of Austerity:
The article by Michael Sturrock on independence (Scotsman, 17 April) contained not a single reference to the cost of implementing a Just Transition in Scotland by 2045.
The Climate Emergency Review Group paper estimated the cost of a Green Revolution at £150 billion, the price of fitting a heat pump to a flat at £40,000 and to upgrsade rural homes to a Band C rating based on EPC standards at £33,000. All such details were suffering from a lack of transparency in the article.
Again no mention of the cost to energy consumers over repaying the capital debt for the 25GW ScotWind project or installing 20GW of on-shore windmills that will desecrate the Flow Country of Caithness and Sutherland just to supply him with electricity. Except that it won’t.
There is great secrecy over the plan by the SNP to build 25GW of hydrogen fuelled gas turbines at some unknown location to keep the lights on, especially since windmills are inefficient (output falls with reductions in wind speed), unreliable (no wind means no energy) and unaffordable (capital costs higher than Hinkley Point C for similar annual output). However, the SNP have made no mention of the costs of electrolysers, the number required to meet the annual demand of the gas turbine plant or the debt built up to provide sufficient leak-proof storage vessels to allow gas turbines to keep the lights on.
Mr Sturrock made no mention of the fact that that independence results in a decade of austerity which means that IndyRef2 is surely irrelevant until consumers have repaid the hundreds of billions of pounds of debt required to meet Scottish net zero goals set by COP26. Time for the generation of pupils and students who marched in support of Greta to decide between the austerity of independence or doing our bit to save the planet!

Financial cushion
Alex Orr (Letters, 17 April) draws attention to the growing Irish economy, the reason for which is the focused economic management of Ireland that has not been distracted by the social engineering and sundry trivia that has afflicted Scotland for some time now. Indeed, the economy of Scotland has been studiously ignored.
It is a blessing that Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, and has the financial cushion of Westminster to fall back on.
April 18, 2023 at 12:57 pm #219465Nicola Sturgeon did “nothing untoward” by privately trying to shut down scrutiny of the SNP’s finances, a close ally has claimed, as she battles to save her political career.
Ian Blackford, the SNP’s former Westminster leader and a Sturgeon loyalist, insisted that the former leader had done nothing wrong after a leaked video that showed her aggressively denying there was any problem with the party’s accounts.
Ms Sturgeon was captured on film in March 2021 telling a meeting of the party’s ruling National Executive Committee that the SNP’s finances had “never been stronger” and warned colleagues not to suggest there were “any problems” with cash.
However, within weeks Ms Sturgeon’s husband, Peter Murrell, lent the party £107,620 to address what the SNP previously said were “cash flow” issues, and a police probe was launched into alleged fraud.
Mr Murrell, who was the SNP chief executive for more than two decades before he quit last month, was arrested on April 5 and the couple’s home was raided as part of the police investigation. He was released without charge as the probe continues.
Sources within the SNP believe that Ms Sturgeon could be forced to quit as an MSP “sooner rather than later”.
She is to stay away from Holyrood this week, despite previously pledging to be an active backbencher, and has not set a date for her return.
Mr Blackford said: “If you listen to that clip, what the First Minister was reflecting on was the ability of the SNP to conduct itself as an organisation, having the financial resources in order to fight elections and to support its members.
“There is nothing which is in any way untoward on that clip that was shown over the course of the weekend.”

Humza Yousaf, who replaced Ms Sturgeon, is facing opposition demands to suspend her and Mr Murrell’s party memberships if she refuses to walk away voluntarily.
The Sunday Mail, which obtained the video of Ms Sturgeon, reported that police were also examining claims that she had sought to block enhanced scrutiny of the SNP finances by vetoing the proposed appointment of a fundraising manager.
‘There’s no need for suspension at all’
However, asked whether Ms Sturgeon should be suspended while police carried out their probe, Mr Blackford said “goodness gracious, absolutely not, there’s no need for that at all”.
He went on to praise Ms Sturgeon, who he still referred to as “the first minister” despite her resignation, for what she had “done for us”.
On growing expectations that Ms Sturgeon would quit the party, he told the BBC’s Good Morning Scotland: “I think what you’ve seen is idle speculation.
“I speak to my colleague Nicola on a very regular basis and I can tell you that she’s focused on serving the interests of her constituents.
“I think history will judge all of us, and show a woman that has led our country through the Covid pandemic, has given inspiring leadership to all of us. She’s still got an awful lot to give.”……

Asides I vaue yur wisdom and very much enjoy reading it. ?
just for you!
I am trying to be politically neutral in this post, in support of the many Scottish Citizens who are lost in all of this argy bargy ie. ‘Party Politics at its worst” ? And I leave comments on the party finances to you?
Some relief for them is that another Scotland Independence referendum, it seems, is unlikely to be happening in the near future, if at all, with the Nationalists apparently in meltdown ?
Like us all dreaming of winning the lottery and living like Kings (& Queens ) Independence has always been a ‘ pipe dream ‘ with some Nationalists dreaming of leaping over Hadrian’s Wall dressed in kilt & Tam o Shanter , blades at the ready screaming death to Westminster, or similar?
But in reality, that’s all it’s ever been – a dream, and as a Welshman I have some empathy with their cause – we have the cilt in Wales, but reality is different?
Asking the electorate to vote on leaving the U.K. , means voting , (on top of the loss of trade already experienced by leaving the Single Market which Nationalists are shouting from the rooftops’, but ) on an impending economic catastrophe ,with them leaving the biggest market Scotland has i,e the .British Market , as well is asking them to commit – ‘ suicide ‘is the word I think?
Turkeys ( blindfolded by passion ) voting for Christmas will be a sorry sight – especially as they are our turkeys, our brothers and sisters!
An independent Scotland being out of the EU, will go to the back of the list of applicants to join – so, the gravy train funding ( which we as net contributors to the EU were paying for anyway , when I say we that included Scottish taxpayers also )will not be resurrected for a very long time, if at all, and importantly, ‘and irrespective of what Boris is purported to have done to the industry’ , will Scottish fishermen and their supporters vote to join the EU Fisheries policy again?
Subsidies from the U.K. Tax payer will cease, heaping even more financial misery on the population, & the Trident base and thousands of jobs will go, as well as thousands of financial services jobs relocated to London probably, and the reality is that the North Sea oil fields division will likely leave Scotland with a smaller share than hoped for, and in any case oil revenue is not the panacea the SNP have been selling .
Then of course, there is the ‘Divorce Bill’, yes Scotland’. you will be apportioned a fair share of the overall U.K. Debt, and of any planned future expenditure ( the system is already in place for the UK ??where an amount is allocated in the whole country’s ‘divorce bill’ from the EU ) and of course there will be a substantial increase in expenditure on very many things including a massive & ongoing increase on defence expenditure !
Scotland even though independent will still require huge support from the hated Westminster for many years to come, especially during the transition period when any disputes are heard and settled, and just from one item alone, ie the security of the British Isles, there will need to be massive cross border cooperation as it is very likely that UK territorial waters will remain as they are now, until ‘Scotland’ is able to undertake maritime protection and security duties alone, which could be many decades down the road, once again ‘If at all’?
No U.K. Government will allow the British Isles be put at risk by Scotland not being able to provide the assurance of security ?
Believe me, there are huge Security implications for both an Independent Scotland and the UK which have been largely ignored in the drive for Independence!
Therefore there will be likely economic misery for quite some time to come, decades probably , and if the Scottish electorate think that they are poor now compared to the rest of the UK, well, just wait and see what life will be like in an Independent Scotland .
But if they vote to go, even by 1 vote, then the result must be respected, just as the 2016 EU Referendum must, and as much as I believe that we are better together – they go!
April 18, 2023 at 7:43 pm #219492If the whole of the UK were given the vote on a Scottish breakaway which democratically they should, then I suspect the Scots would win. Thank you and sod off I hear the cry…

April 19, 2023 at 2:40 pm #219550SNP left as laughing stock at PMQs as Sunak rips into Sturgeon over mounting crisis
Story by Dan Falvey • 1h agoSNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn was met with a chorus of heckles in the House of Commons today as he faced MPs for the first time since multiple arrests of high profile party figures.
The Aberdeen South representative joked he hoped Conservative MPs had had “as a relaxing Easter as he did” as he was mocked over Police Scotland’s investigation into the SNP.
With pressure mounting on the SNP, Rishi Sunak used Prime Minister’s Questions this afternoon to attack the party for the legal crisis it is being engulfed by.
The Prime Minister swiped: “If they can’t fix the mess that Nicola Sturgeon left their party in, how can they possibly fix the mess that she left Scotland in?”
The SNP’s former chief executive Peter Murrell – who is married to Nicola Sturgeon – has been arrested and questioned, before being later released without charge, with the couple’s home also being searched by officers.
On Tuesday Police Scotland also arrested SNP treasurer Colin Beattie, also the MSP for Midlothian North and Musselburgh, as part of Police Scotland’s ongoing investigation into how more than £600,000 in donations to the party earmarked for an independence referendum had been used.
