could you advise me whether I should start now or contact motability about an extension?
thanks as always

No harm looking now but problem is looking for cars now and will they still be here when ordering time comes. It happen to myself, waited to 3 months before renew date then the car I had my mind set on for the previous 6 months came off Motability less than a week before I could order.
Had to wait another 3 months until something suitable for myself came up again, got my order in and the car got withdrawn again a few weeks later so if you see it, order it quickly.
I would extend your current car regardless but you can’t do that until the 3 months before renew has been reach.
May 3, 2022 at 3:32 pm #184495similar position here 12th dec is the 3 month date but honestly i cant see anthing at the moment i would jump at.
ive started making a long list as i call it and will narrow it down by going to physically see cars and test drive them.
some at the moment arent on motability but ouve got to hope.
so far i have, vauxhall mokka, toyota hcr, aygo x, kona, ds3 crossback, kia soul, ford puma not sure if it or the aygo is high enough.
needs are higher seat/easy to get in and out of and automatic, knobs not touch feely although nowadays the last ones probably a nonstarter. oh and the ap less than 1k wpms which may rule out the hcr.
otherwise i am resigned to extending until i can find a cheap runaround and leave the scheme.

DragonflyWe also have 6 months left before we are eligible for a new car, I already have a reminder set to ring Motability 3 month before the end of our current lease and request a 2year extension.
Still very happy with the Qashqai Techna + and we have only covered 10k miles since we picked it up because of Covid
May 3, 2022 at 7:43 pm #184501Its a difficult one with the current situation. If you look know and are lucky enough to find something that you like, there is a big chance it will not be there in 3 months come renewal time. If it were me I would hang on untill close to the 3 month renewal and then decide if there something you like, if not whether you want to extend your lease untill something becomes available or leave the scheme and buy a 2nd hand car.

vinnym70I think you absolutely have to leave any decisions until Motability contact you to say it’s time to pick a new car.
I’m in the same boat, new car due in October but for the reasons stated above, extension seems the most likely option between:
- Deciding on a car which will likely have very extended delivery dates
- Deciding on a car which may be withdrawn from the scheme after ordering
- Deciding on a car which may have spec changed between ordering and delivery
- Deciding on a car which isn’t quite right for you but is the best option available
Really hoping that things start to return to normality soon but that prospect seems unlikely so extending for as long as Motability will allow is very appealing.
