If your next car were to be electric, then the traditional marques aren’t necessarily the ones to go for.  It completely changes the conversation from a status car to getting the best available EV.  Surprisingly marques like BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes really aren’t perceived as highly in terms of their EV offerings.  KIA, Hyundai, Genesis and even some Chinese brands aiming at higher costs (and, of course Tesla) all generate much more excitement over a new release than the traditional big names.

As for my choice, I’m much more interested in the Skoda upgrade than the Audi equivalent, there again my car choices have been based on practicalities over image and status.  As many say, getting in/out comfortably and sitting in the right position becomes more important than knowing everyone you drive past recognises you’re of a certain status (which you may well not be).   That’s partly an age thing, partly as my physical conditions have worsened, I’ve had to focus on being physically capable of driving the car for 2 hours, which in many I wouldn’t think possible.
