Gas & Electric Standing Charge Increases

At precisely 00:1am today i glanced at my Electricity smart meter and it suddenly went from zero to 58p

Last week i received a notification from my energy supplier OVO stating that regrettably they will be increasing the daily standing charge again sighting a sharp increase in their costs.

Let me guess . . . Covid, Brexit, Ukraine and now Palestine being the culprits.

Recently Director for Markets at Ofgem Tim Jarvis said: “Ofgem looked at the issue of standing charges with findings revealing a complex situation where there are winners and losers”

Winners – that’ll be the Energy companies.

Losers – that’ll be the rest of us.

Toothless Regulator OFGEM thanks for nothing.

They have just announced that there will be an increase of £95 a year.

I wonder how much of an increase in mental health issues we really have as opposed to a lot of people just no longer being able to cope with the pressure of life created by the people at the top milking them.

            I agree 100% @Callmejohn

Disabled folks have always been a soft touch for governments of all persuasions to milk. Without bringing politics too much into it i’m also firmly of the opinion that the right wing of the Tory party also get a big kick out of milking us then bashing us too.

In Scotland, we are already paying more than the rest of the UK even though a lot of the energy used in England and Wales passes through Scotland to get there.

Kezo, it was just quick mention on the 11 o’clock radio news that it would go up by £95 a year on average due to an increase in marke prices partly due to the palatine and Israel. conflict. No mention of kWh prices, but yes from January.

According to a presser from energy regulator Ofgem everyone’s energy prices will rise by 5% in January. The typical annual household bill will go up from £1,834 to £1,928, a rise of £94 or 5%.

Analysts have predicted that prices will fall back in March though. The price of gas will be 7p per kilowatt hour (kWh), and electricity will 29p per kWh.

Not a mention of this in yesterday’s Autumn statement.

Thankfully we are with Octopus on a fixed 1yr tariff taken out in July this year. Was a little more expensive at the time but thought it would see us over the winter knowing how much prices increase.

                      Electricity: 27.36p per kWh

                      Gas: 6.98p per kWh

Another little trick OVO use is when you call them to pay your bill you are quoted your ‘live balance’ on the phone, rather than the actual billed amount. By definition one’s live balance is always gonna be higher than a bill dated days or even weeks earlier. Very sneaky in my book!

And whilst i’m on the subject of OVO many folks (including me) were forced over to them when they purchased SSE energy. Suddenly monthly billing instead of quarterly billing was the only game in town if you didn’t want to pay through a variable direct debit – a variable direct debit allows the energy company to take however much they want from your bank account. Not something i would ever agree to because i always insist on paying for my actual usage not a projected usage.
