Lots of local papers seem to have this story, especially in the north, but I don’t see any reference to an official source.

The story seems to come out of proposals by the Commission on Social Security.  No plans, just proposals…

Would not put it past the DWP.

Wouldn’t it cost them more than the current system though?

Depends on how they implement it. If it’s flat £231 per week while retaining all other benefits, then yes, it would cost more.

If it’s £231, but that’s it, then no. It’ll cost less, and people would potentially lose out on a lot of stuff (council tax reduction, help with water, energy etc). It’s more akin to a “basic income scheme”.

The new disability benefit’s payment rates would be: Lower – £83.70 per week; Middle – £152.15per week; Higher – £230.77 per week.

scotland is taking responsibility for their own disabled(as i think are wales and Ireland) and have promised that its value will be at least as good as it is.  Mind you, Ive heard that before.
