Reading the.gov site it appears it’s the manufacturer that applies etc and therefore discounts at the top level? So, presumably, that should be able to be passed on to bulk buyers like MB (and other lease fleet operators)? Of course there is the possibility that MB might just use it to offset any losses they’re making on EVs at the moment.
I didn’t read in detail and know there are plenty on here that will and be able to highlight the minutiae! š

Well at least we have a bargaining point if the car is on the list, as in āapply the grant to the ap or Iām off elsewhereā and also hope that come October we see some blanket reductions.
I think youād soon be shown the door! The grant is not within the dealerships control. Itās applied to the manufacturer who may, or may not, decide to lower the AP or provide an offer (although, as I keep saying, Motability will have already negotiated deals way in excess of the grant level, so the two arenāt directly related). Any additional deal negotiated with a dealer would come off their margin, so a dealer funded discount of the same magnitude as a grant just isnāt going to happen. It would have to be funded by the manufacturer or group.
August 15, 2025 at 10:29 am #311325Motability cheerfully passing the blame to manufacturers again. Ā Itās always supposed to be a negotiation but itās never a failing of Motability to not understand who gets how much and ensure as much of that is passed to us as possible. Ā Afterall, thatās why it was applied.

August 15, 2025 at 10:34 am #311326Ā If a car qualifies and itās available on the Motability Scheme, itās up to the manufacturer to decide if they want to change the Advance Payment.Ā
If a car becomes eligible for the grant, it will not necessarily mean the Advance Payment will change. This is subject to the manufacturerās discretion. In many cases, as we update our prices every three months, the best possible deals have already been applied for Scheme customers and wonāt change until they are reviewed again next quarter
Any cars eligible for the goverment grant won’t filter through Motability directly. If a manufacturer/dealer wants to pass the government grant onto scheme users, it will be through the usual channels such, as “cashback” deals. Though I expect any such offer will only apply to group stock cars or cars that aren’t selling well!
August 15, 2025 at 11:14 am #311328at least with the ariya nissan have done the decent thing.
certainly piqued my interest in the ariya.
i will be going to nissan soon to do more sit tests.
again a long range electric may work esp if its a low ap.
August 15, 2025 at 11:19 am #311330The grant is from the government therefore transparent to the manufacturer. Unless either Motability or the manufacturer want a bite of it, the grant must be passed down to us, leaseholders.

There are several leasing companies actively promoting the 2025 ECG, so on that note, there is no reason why it shouldn’t apply to the scheme however, Motability’s wording isn’t necessarily black and white in that the grant will apply and passed the buck onto the to the manufacturer.
It will be interesting to assess overall costs on Motability against outright purchase costs, HP, PCP and lease deals on tier 1 and 2 cars!
Select Car leasing for example states:
“For lease customers, the discount is automatically applied at point of lease – thereās no separate application by the customer. The grant is applied through the manufacturer or dealership via the official grant portal.”

August 15, 2025 at 3:34 pm #311346The issue that many are overlooking is that yes, the grant will be applied to eligible cars BUT thereās nothing to stop a manufacturer re-configuring the discount that it already gives to Motability.
For example, manufacturer previously gave Motability £10k discount on a particular EV. That car now gets a £3.5k govt grant. The manufacturer reduces its discount to £6.5k which, added to the grant, means the same £10k discount and no change to AP. The grant has been applied, but the winner is the manufacturer.
This exact same thing happened with house builders during the help to buy scheme. The winners were the house builders whose profits rocketed, at the tax payers expense!
August 15, 2025 at 3:50 pm #311347To add to that – my understanding is that the grant is two levels Ā – a 3.5k and a lower one Ā – and apparently no cars yet tick the boxes for the higher one – on the news yesterday.
August 15, 2025 at 4:18 pm #311348August 15, 2025 at 7:03 pm #311351Apparently, if you get a car with under the Ā£37k price limit, all more expensive cars are also eligible for the ECG discount. Ā Nissan have released a 87kWh Engage for this very purpose which means only the e4orce dual motor vehicles donāt qualify.
Theyāve managed to get everything on offer to Motability customers discounted through the grant.
When the LEAF comes out it will be the first car eligible for the whole Ā£3750 as itās UK built.

Weāll find out in a months time, but I wouldnāt hold your breath. Even as a private buyer, looking for just one car, it is currently possible to get huge discounts on new EVs, even those not eligible for the grants. I get a monthly notification of current discounts on selected cars and was staggered to see a number in the 20-30% range and even one at 35%. As the biggest fleet buyer, we can be sure that Motability will be negotiating much bigger discounts than an individual will be able to buying just one car! On that basis, whether a Ā£1,750 grant (which will most likely result in manufacturers just reducing their own discounts by the same amount) will find its way through to APs Iām a little sceptical – but we shall see.
