BrydoThere are many questions members have about the motability scheme such as :-
Can I extend my lease?
Can I change my car before my contract is up and if so will it cost me anything?
How much is the GCB and will I get it if I have a few scratches?
What happens if I lose PIP?
If you have any questions about motability, then this is the place to come. We have many knowledgeable members only to willing to give advice. Many of our members have been on the scheme for decades and know virtually everything there is to know about the scheme.

Why is it so difficult to get a curtesy car when yours is in for repair, I used to get one through the dealership in times gone by but now I have been waiting a week, and still nothing. Trying to get in touch is something else too.
Someone started a separate thread on this very issue the other day, so your answers will be found there. In summary, many dealerships seem to have cut back on the number of courtesy cars (some no longer have any at all) and also collect and return services. Our local Ford dealership no longer has courtesy cars but offers collect and return if you book well in advance. Our local Hyundai dealership stopped collect and return for all but Motability customers but again, you need to book well in advance. A third option is asking for a demonstrator. If booking a car in for a service I always book 4-6 weeks in advance to ensure that I can get one of these services. If you try a week or two before you will struggle.
Some dealer don’t even have demonstrators as I found out with Suzuki, its all call centre based.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
September 1, 2025 at 8:28 am #312016I’ve got a private number plate that I want to put onto my next vehicle that I ordered yesterday.I was told by the dealer that the new vehicle has to have the original number on it and I have to retain my private plate and change it myself. Now when I had the vehicle I’ve got now it never came with a registration number on it.How do I find out what number I have to put on and how do I do this. Also when do I start doing all this as my dealer is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.
September 1, 2025 at 8:46 am #3120941. You have to obtain a permission from Motability. Just give them a call.
2. You should have your personal number plate’s certificate (I presume you have).
3. You need to inform the dealer and insist the dealer will apply the new number plate (for a standard cost of £85).
4. When the vehicle arrives to the dealership they will fix your number plate, not the one which came with the car. So in theory there are two vehicles in the country with the same number plate, but it permitted.
I would insist to escalate the matter within the dealership or call another branch and asking how to do it. And then go back to yours and explain the steps.
In many cases you will find people are either incompetent in what they are doing or don’t want to be proactive.
Either way, the above is based on my personal experience and never failed me.

As an alternative, I let the dealership assign a normal registration number and I get the private plate assigned at a later date (usually once the reg is no longer the ‘current’ one 😂). I have adopted this approach with both private and Motability cars and it’s worked really well for me
When I want to get the private plate assigned I drive to Halfords (with the required documentation) and when parked in their car park I unscrew the original plates and hand them to the technician so that they can drill the holes in the same places on the private plates.. I then pop the new plates on before I leave.
The advantage of this approach is that whilst it’s more work up front, it makes it very easy when I’m about to sell the car (if private) or hand it back (Motability). I simply put the private reg on retention and the DVLA automatically re-assign the original reg number, which I already have the original plates for, so it’s a 5 minute job to swap the plates over. Job done. Repeat process with next car!

Good call too. Although in my case I simply tell the new dealer to apply my personal number plate and they do the rest. I know there’s an option on Motability website to remove personal number plate, but never used it.

Just over a year left with the CX60 and want rid for numerous reasons.
My own due diligence and extensive research means I’m not going to cut my nose off to spite my face! The Scheme has insulated us from real motoring costs and I’ve been shocked by how much the hidden running costs are for normal people. £1500 for insurance, £425 supplementary road tax every year etc etc etc.
So, the idea of purchasing outside the Scheme has been kicked into touch!
Skoda Kodiaq has a boot 30% bigger than the CX60 and isn’t ridiculously high AP. Probably go diesel because the previous Sharan and Allspace were bullet proof cruisers. [Scrub that must have looked at an old site and only PHEV on the Sheme!]
Just need to know the process for termination and reorder.
Thanks in anticipation

They will run through the process. You pay an early termination fee (£250?) but get your AP back pro rata (nothing for any optional extras though).
Obviously stick with Motability if it suits, but private running costs aren’t anywhere near as scary as many people think. If you are eligible for a Motability car you will almost certainly be eligible for free road tax – even the crazy new vehicle charges.
As for insurance, you can transfer no claims history from Motability. I got quotes for an £80k car recently and even with only 3 years no claims it was £520 fully comprehensive.
Also, going privately you aren’t forced to have a new car!

Just in case you didn’t know – you’re not bind to this order: if you find better deal, you can cancel at any time, before you key in your PIN code, when collecting the vehicle.

I’m asking as I ordered in August and on the Contract Hire Agreement T&Cs it simply states that it’s a pre contract, and since then the smart drive for example has been added to the terms that wasn’t there before.
Thanks

Possibly. It’s certainly worth asking the question.
I think there’ll be a few on here thinking the same thing. As someone else said, Motability may stop this from happening if too many try and do the same thing.
In addition to the loss of the GCB, there will be an early termination fee of £250. You usually need a medical reason, like a change in your disability, or for the car to be an absolute lemon with on-going mechanical or electrical problems.
Having said that, it’s worth having a conversation with someone at Motability to sound them out.

I don’t think that this would necessarily make financial sense. Motability have estimated that the average AP will increase by around £400 as a result of the changes. By terminating a lease early, paying a £250 penalty and foregoing your good condition bonus as well, you could be worse off than just suffering the additional costs when your lease expires.

I’d say no based on several factors, including its not a requirement and 99% of dealerships don’t apply it properly and certainly not to the level of a proper deatailing company.
January 20, 2026 at 8:42 pm #332745Hello guys , Sorry if this has already been answered , but I’m due for a renewal on my car , currently on my first Motability car about to have a look what’s available and order my 2nd. I can order from the 10th Feb, but then my lease ends may 5th.
Does this mean if I order a car I would have to wait till May 5th , or if the car is ready or there’s a stock option would I be able to have it slightly earlier. Or is it just best to wait . Thanks guys.
January 20, 2026 at 9:20 pm #332754if its a standard 3 year lease you only get the gcb £250 if you complete the 3 years.you can apply to swap early but they will charge you £250 and you wont get gcb double wammy it would need to be a very good deal to do that.

Your 3 month ordering window opens on the 10th of Feb and the earliest you can pick up your new car is the 5th May. Collecting your car prior to 5th May requires permission and early termination rules will apply as @mitch states.
March 11, 2026 at 6:24 pm #344743Might I ask the definitive process for ordering a vehicle from the Scheme please?
On atleast two previous occasions, I’ve made the application at the dealership and picked it up the same day. Admittedly, I was the Appointee on those handovers.
Now, because of the complication of there being a Court of Protection Deputy as Appointee, Motability insist I attend the dealership to order and then collect the car 4 days later. Not a problem, but an inconvenience, as the VW Van Centre is in Birmingham and I’m in West Yorkshire.
At first, Motability were insisting the Deputy would need to place the order but that would have cost more than a grand in solicitors fees. Now I’ve got to jump through various hoops to process the order to Motability’s satisfaction. If nothing else, it demonstrates just how much more prescriptive the process is these days. Might just be the legal involvement but find it over the top.
Which experience is the norm? Ordering and collection in the same visit. Or the two visit scenario prescribed by Motability?
March 11, 2026 at 6:42 pm #344750I always thought the 4 day rule applied?
Maybe speak with the van centre and see if they will do over internet but base it on you went in person.
I thought you’d ordered and was ready for collection?
