Hi all, I am looking to pick your brains of anyone with experience of using Cowal mechanical push pull hand controls or/and Veigel electric push pull hand controls. I have been using Jeff Gosling hand controls for about the last 20 years which were fine, but I am impressed with both of the other two makes, but not sure if I am best keeping with the mechanical type or changing to the electric type.

I have just ordered a Hyundai Ioniq 6 Ultra 2WD, as I am Spina Bifida/Paraplegic and in a wheelchair and SUV’s are too high for me to get in and out of. I could have had one straight away but the colour I want will not arrive until April, so I have plenty of time to do some research.

Hi callmejohn (I like that) sorry I can’t offer much in the way of assistance other than wondering if youcan try them yourself at a an adaptions approved workshop near to yourself. The other small benifit of my post is, it also puts it in the “recent replies” section, where it has twice the hope of someone seeing it by some one who can help.

P.S Nice list of cars you have had on the scheme, some I remember as a lad, such as the Invacar and Daf Variomatic an Uncle had 🙂

Mrs Joe uses Jeff Gosling push pull hand controls. We had a courtesy car a few years back and Motability sent someone out to fit it with temporary hand controls, she hated them and didn’t use the car. I’d be inclined to stick with what you know, unless you need to switch to electronic controls for strength reasons.

As Kezo said, see if you can get a trial of both.

Hi Thanks Kezo for your reply, Sorry about the list if cars which has come out like a dogs dinner and the car I have ordered is a Ioniq Ultimate not an Ultra.

Yes I have been caught out by the new list, I went to see a Kia Proceed GTlIne s on Monday and coming out of the showroom late on, I noticed a Hyundai Ioniq 6 Premier which looked impressive but there were no sales people to show us in the boot to see if it would take the wheelchair.

I read up on it and was surprised to see the big reduction on the AP, down from £8,000 for the Premium to £3,500 for the higher speck Ultimate. So went back on Tuesday and it ticked all my boxes (apart from not being a petrol or diesel estate) it had a low transfer from my wheelchair, as SUV are out of the question,  electric leather seats and a 360 camera which I needed. So I ordered one on Friday and got started on getting an electrical point put in the house from Motability, so I have had no time yet to look into hand controls, but we do have a Veigel electric hand control agent in Glasgow, so plan to contact them next week. Certainly the Cowan hand controls look neater than the Jeff Gosling ones, so will try and find out more about them as my dealer can get either fitted.

Thanks JoJoe for your reply and help, as I said to Kezo above I will be trying to find out more about the electric hand controls this week and also consider the Cowan hand controls as they are pretty much the same as the Jeff Gosling ones but seem neater. I remember someone on here recommending them 5 year ago when I got my last car, but at that time you had to go to their factory to get them fitted, but that is not the case now.

#callmejohn  I’d be interested in which hand controls you go for as I’m also thinking about the Ioniq 6 (post some pictures if you can?) and how did you get on fitting your chair in the boot?

                    Hi Kezo

Yes I have been trying to find videos on both sets, thanks.
