When Buying An Old EV Makes More Sense

My first EV was a Hyundai Kona Ultimate, fantastic car which took a hoist but even getting a small folding scooter or powerchair in was a battle. My second was a very wonderful Skoda Enyaq EV, which as we all know really is a fantastic car, it took a hoist and offered more space. But my back injury was deteriorating and I found it a bit low to get into. I didn’t use it much so handed it back to Motability after just a few months. My third was a one-year-old Mokka E which I bought very cheap a bit too quickly in a dumb moment, to cut down my monthly outgoings. It did that but was still an expensive lump of cash sat on the driveway for just ‘Sunday’ country drives, given my still deteriorating back limited journeys so much. I sold it at a little loss and thought that I’d then just be going out when I could on my mobility scooter (they’re also EVs!). But that broke down erepairably, leaving me stranded on a country road. I’m not well enough for that. So now I have a seven-year-old Kia Soul EV bought for just £7,000 in A1 condition that when I’m up to it takes me out for short journeys through my beloved countryside a lot warmer than on a mobility scooter! It is easy to get into, has heated seats, costs less than 2p per mile, free when the sun shines and I can charge it from my solar panels, and its real world range of just 80 miles with a tiny battery is no problem given that my own real world range is less! So if you don’t need your car to go far don’t be worrying about having one with a long range. Nay sayers to EVs will worry about the battery quality after 7 years, but it was 96% with 56,000 on the clock, so no worries. https://youtu.be/rJzGaj-Kwt4?si=C_ENaYPcrPKiG47b

Looks great and suits your needs

        Makes a lot of sense.

I understand only to well the limitations of back problems

Having lumbar stenosis (all 5 intervertebral discs): that now lead to neurogenic claudication ( quickly cuts of oxygen to the legs after a very short walking distance and your legs turn to concrete, not quite but the effect is just the same)

I dont personally know anyone else with this and like most of us I have to plan everything ahead

I recline most of the day and like you on occasion

I cant beat a blast out in the EV and sit and people watch from the comfort of my car seat at least once a week

I may well take a leaf out of your book in about 20 months time at the end of lease and get my own cheap car

Might be sooner if Starmer mucks around with PIP in the spring

          @just2fish

You got yourself a steal, and with a car that works for you.

You would pay twice that on a motability car

My buddy was very impressed with my EV and its running costs.

He is due to renew the car he uses for work in 6 months. I suggested looking at a Model 3 they can be picked up for £17k, or by next year the Ioniq 5 will drop to a similar price at renewal. His running costs for his Golf gdi are high,  fuel and servicing. He spends £2.5K/ year on fuel. I pointed out his fuel costs with an EV will be £250/year.

You get something that works for you. But that a good deal outwith Motability.

Part of me likes new cars, part of me likes the idea of keeping this one going to prove the point of the reliability of even older electric cars. I called it my Smurf, being bright blue with a white roof.

              Since you posted

I have taken a closer look at the Kia Soul EV and I have seen some very positive expert reviews on Youtube

The drive quality/standard kit/reliability/long warranty/price are all attractive

Also for those that need a longer range/more power of 200hp+ there is the newer bargain priced options

Cheers as this ticks my boxes and is now something I will be keeping on my radar for the near future

And yes that blue is its best colour
