On the big day at hand over most people are excited, desperate to get the car out on the road on their own to get familiar with how it performs. The sales rep has just spent a fair bit of time going through the controls, setting up bits and bobs and going through the dos and donts. You get home and the next day you’ve forgotten everything he’s told you.
I’m sure many of you do the same but I video everything. From the minute he opens the car door to the minute you get in and drive away. No one can be expected to remember everything he’s told you so having a video record on your phone is an ideal way to detail everything you’ve been told.

If only there was a document or booklet which would detail everything which was said about the controls.
Maybe call it an owner’s manual.
It could be placed in the glove box or be available through the car’s infotainment system.
Or fair enough Brydo, you could just video everything in a slightly creepy way 👍😆 📹

The Ioniq 5 manual is an inch thick and comprehensive too
September 20, 2024 at 11:34 pm #28901872 dudes fill your boots reading the manuals or just give me a call I’ll have it all on video😂

When we got our first Motability car, a Honda E, ladened with tech, the salesperson who dealt with us was off and car was handed over by what seemed like a YTS trainee, who knew nothing about the car. It was a very disappointing experience as it was also the first time we had got a brand new car.
@72 dudes – nothing beats an old fashioned physical book or manual. 😀

Agreed, my first day of new car ownership is taken up reading the manual! 😆
Sadly more and more are becoming digitalised

The technical advances of today’s cars are nothing short of incredible, with safety features that could only have been dreamed of a few years ago.
A proper handover should include setting up these features if you request it.

Manual is perused as a last resort.
The handover for my S-Max , we drove in, did a 10 min. turnaround then we went on a 300 mile drive as wife had an urgent appointment in Edinburgh.
Had a bit of fun with my Kia Soul as it was set at miles, but the service interval was still in kilometres, even the manual was no good there, but a video (nod to Brydo there) on You Tube had that info so it was all sorted.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
September 21, 2024 at 10:41 am #289038Hi Brydo,
Agree. A whole new ball game. In aviation, when converting onto a new aircraft, the first part of the course is technical ground school, enforced by simulator visits to practice system operation and normal plus non normal check lists.
perhaps it is time for the manufactures to develop an app to replicate their tablet- mimicking control systems – some of which are allegedly much better thought out than others. Are you listening, VAG? The software engineers could then give new owners an opportunity to practice accessing their multi layered menu systems, with some explanation of the functions.
My personal experience of these new systems is restricted to last generation technology VAG, now extended by an order for the old school Touran. Despite having had a career multitasking in ergonomically sophisticated Boeings, I would find touch screen icons and menus a dangerous distraction, especially on a winding, pot hole infested B road on a wet winters night. Safety has taken a backwards step, imho. De misting, for example, should be an accessible, easy to locate button, with tactile positive feedback. Eyes on the road.
September 21, 2024 at 11:05 am #289040Personally I wouldn’t video the salesman doing the handover. I think they’d rightly think that I was an extremely odd person doing that 😂. As there is usually around a week between the car arriving at the dealership and the car being ready for pick up, I always go to look at it when it arrives and take the owners manual home to read before I pick the car up. Often you can access the owners manuals online well before that.
The salesman was great at the handover when we picked up our Hyundai Tucson Ultimate PHEV a month ago, and was happy to explain anything at all, but if he had gone through all of the cars features and functions then I’d still be there now 😂 What he did do, which was very useful, was set up the BlueLink system with my phone so that I had full functionality from the off.
Even though I read the manual cover to cover and have driven the car for a month, I’m still learning new things. In fact, the car has so many features, many of them weren’t even mentioned in the manual – even though it was 2 inches thick 😂.
September 21, 2024 at 1:05 pm #289048Personally I wouldn’t video as it is a distraction from the actual demonstration when you should be absorbing it and asking clarification as you go on.
I have found that when I am unsure of anything with a new car, there will be a video clip on You Tube that will show a explanation for any specific action on your car be it setting the seat memory or understanding the dashboard layout.Enjoy that great feeling of collecting a brand new car in the moment, not through the lens of a camera.
September 24, 2024 at 9:57 am #289208I hate reading manuals and will always avoid whenever possible
Thanks to YouTube thats 99% of the time
Renault have the very best bite sized Youtube tutorials and walk-through of any manufacturer out there imo
Made understanding the Megan Etecs Tech a breeze
Video at handovee simply to record the vehicles handover condition well thats another thing that some may wish to consider
September 24, 2024 at 10:44 am #289210Horses for courses, we a find what we are comfortable with. Most of us have done research on the cars we order. Youtube is very good for that. All i wanted at handover was the girl to show me how to connect my phone to the car and the app.
What I forgot to do was clear the memory and do a reset on the old car.
Good to get others perspectives, tips and tricks. All good.
September 24, 2024 at 11:07 am #289211The main thing i do om collection /handover is insist of 1more test drive before commiting,i really dont get why people turn up look the car over and sign without driving it.As it is literally the car you will have not the test/viewing car .
September 24, 2024 at 11:18 am #289212I like to be shown how to turn off all the –

Bing bong bing, bong bing boo 😂September 25, 2024 at 10:27 am #289276I remember when I collected my Tiguan R-Line Tech, nothing to video even if I wanted to. The sales person didn’t even venture outside of the showroom to where the car was parked.
Although they did say that they would answer any questions I had before leaving.
They didn’t seem impressed at all that I insisted on checking out the car before completing the paperwork / pin 👍
Q’s
a: don’t I receive a free usb cable for android auto?> she went & found 1 for me.👍
b: where is the sensor for the hands free tailgate opener because I couldn’t trigger it?🙁
> the R- Line Tech doesn’t come with that feature 🙁🙁🙁
BTW > I just needed to take at least 1 step back after triggering the auto boot opener before it actually opened 🤭🤭🤭
All other handovers with various brands & dealerships were way more engaging 👍
