Under 25s Dilemma

Hi All, do you think motability would consider increasing the insurance group for the under 25 cars. I only ask as there’s not much variety of cars upto insurance group  16. 120bhp makes sense but there’s quite a lot of cars under 120bhp but are not allowed for Under 25s due to the insurance group.
I currently have a 68 plate 116d M Sport and that was insurance group 16, now the newer model car is insurance group 17 and unavailable to people my age. Same with the Mercedes A180d.
Surely motability should amend their rules in line with technology changes such as EV cars and they also have higher insurance groups.

They will have to address this issue for sure come 2030. I feel for the younger scheme users and the limited choice.

I did have my crashes before 25 yo, and then I got speeding tickets! Some people just don’t learn eh?!

Have you raised it with Motability? I hope your next car isn’t too much of a dog for you.

My son left the scheme due to this. When I queried it with Motability they said there were no plans to change the rules. This is ridiculous given that the reason for a lot of the cars being a higher insurance group is not even performance related.

MB can’t really change anything on that front though – for that you need to query RAC. They made the rules in regards to insurance.

I do agree though, while i’m not 100% on the “remove power restriction” train, the insurance groups itself should be less restricted. Doesn’t matter if a kid drives a 120hp Focus or a 120hp 116d.

In regards to EVs, lower powered ones will become “mainstream” before long. We could talk about an increase in terms of power within reason, but handing an 18 year old a 200hp RWD (ID3) certainly isn’t a great idea – and i know that there’s responsible kids out there. The problem is the majority that isn’t, and i would’ve included myself in that irresponsible group, knowing how i drove (and crashed) multiple cars prior to reaching 20 years of age.

Coming to think of it, one solution to the “EV problem” could be the electric equivalent to a restrictor.

EVs have variable power outputs, all it’d take is a device by the insurance company restricting the voltage/power to whatever they deem insurable.

It’s considerably easier to decrease the power in an electric motor than it is with a petrol engine.  In terms of modification, that would be rather easy. Maybe that’s an option.
