I can’t understand why Toyota has never had a dsg type gearbox ?
March 15, 2020 at 12:03 am #109363Oscarmax yes I have a degree in mechanical engineering for my sins.
Believe me if cvt gearboxes were great I’d be the first to praise them.
Road test one and then a bmw or Vw auto back to back and you’ll immediately feel the difference.March 15, 2020 at 1:04 am #109366I currently have a golf with a dsg and will be changing it for a honda civic sport next month which has a cvt and paddle shifts.
honda has done a good job imo 182 bhp from a 1.5l petrol with a cvt 0 → 62 mph 8.3 secs and 220 nm of torque.
Did look at the corrolla 2.ol hatch great mpg as well but is small.. saloon only in 1.8l a big mistake on there part as i don’t want an estate, but as the battery is in the boot just not viable..
so i didn’t bother even test driving one as after driving the honda, I ordered one.. If the cvt was that bad i deffo wouldn’t off.. I was sceptical but driving the car yourself the only way to know if it suits you..

very true they must be liked by some people as there are plenty on the roads.
I would give them an extended road test 24/48 hours min.
Usually dealers give 20 min on a set test route.March 15, 2020 at 8:05 am #109374Is it £1.599 advance payment for the Honda ?

Hi Phil that make two us, I have never understood why some manufacture have fitted CVT transmission to non hybrid engines, and yes some of the early CVT were interesting. I have been out of the industry now for 15 years due to my head injury 15 years ago, I leave it all to you youngsters with your technical minds.
I had a long road test with the new 2.4 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, I was expecting a wailing transmission and excessive engine noise, it could not have been so different, I floored the throttle to induce the effect just a very quiet raise in engine rpm and noise. When we jumped back into the Ford Kuga powershift (not as refine as the BMW and VW transmission), the Kuga felt quite agricultural and noisy.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.
March 15, 2020 at 2:59 pm #109398I agree with Phil and Pepsi max

It was a few years ago for me too my first job was for Daimler.
But I fancied a change and went back to uni and did another degree then had my own business for 40 plus years the last 15 while disabled. It really depends what you want in a car my mum had an automatic fiesta with a cvt box which she loved, I hated it it was horrendous on a motorway it put me off cvt boxes for life.
March 15, 2020 at 3:29 pm #109403I had a Volvo 340 years ago with the daf cvt box horrific

That’s strange my first degree was in building surveying, I have always messed and built cars both for the road and racing, the wife talked me into doing another degree my second degree is in Automotive Engineering, basically Mechanical Engineering but obviously more biased towards Automotive.

yep although when i had the test drive back in sept it was £999 went up £300 each 1/4 before i could actually order in jan am getting £200 off the ap from the dealer and with the gcb will be £799 newer mild refreshed one. thats about my limit for an ap and i really need adaptive cruise you get alot as standard not as an added pack. The corolla is pretty well spec’d as standard as well but the civic i like it especially this
March 16, 2020 at 2:08 pm #109449Last year I had a C-HR 1.8 Hybrid for 3 days and had to do a couple of long motorway journeys in it, I have to say it was the most efficient way of turning petrol into noise I have ever encountered, while travelling in the middle lane at about 65mph I wanted to pull out to pass a car and put my foot down to pull into traffic, O M G! I nearly S*%t myself, all I got was a cabin full of horrible engine noise and barely any acceleration and had to swerve back into the middle lane.
They were the 2 worst drives of my life plus once at speed it just runs the engine constantly and the 400 miles returned me an average of 28mpg, never again will I even consider a CVT on any car!
