A friend has a A class and he is a real car person, he loves it, had it about a year (pcp) and still raves about it, but in fairness I’ve never heard anything bad about the Leon. Sorry that doesn’t help I know. I know it’s exsteam and we shouldn’t have to do it, but if you really are between 2 vehicles and want to make an informed decision, in some cases hire companies will allow you to hire a car on a half day basis, so for the sake of around £20 you could feed your curiosity.

We’re due to take delivery of Leon ST with the same engine / transmission very soon but did have a test drive in a manual 1.5TSi FR Sport and was really impressed with it.  Compared to our current 1.4 turbo Vauxhall Astra with similar power it felt quicker and handled very nicely, this was probably due to the stiffer sports suspension setup.  I was also quite taken with the digital dash and things like the auto hold for the brakes, the boot is also a good size and having full LED headlights will be a result come winter.

We were lucky enough to order ours last quarter so got the 2.0TSi Xcellence Lux ST but apart from a few tech bits the FR Sport is similar – the Xcellence Lux is geared towards comfort and kit whilst the FR Sport is more of a “drivers” car with sporty suspension, drive modes and paddle shifters.

There is a thread (https://forum.whichmobilitycar.co.uk/forums/topic/seat-use-of-the-2-0-tsi-discontinued/) about the Leon with the 2.0TSI, so far everyone who’s taken delivery has nothing but praise for the kit and rather rapid performance – 190PS and 320Nm of torque coupled with the 7 speed DSG seems to be quite a potent combination…

Cant comment on the Merc but hope some of the above helps – personally I think for the AP the Leon is a bit of steal, especially compared to some of the silly prices for a VW Golf this quarter.

I used to have the Leon FR in the 1.8tsi dsg and it was the most fun car I’ve had in terms of driving pleasure. I loved the sound and the acceleration and also the brakes which gave me a lot of confidence when driving. I also thought the steering was nice and sharp. There will be plenty who disagree but by MY driving standards, it was great. I’ve got no idea if the car has improved since I had one but I doubt it’s got worse.

I think £399 AP is excellent considering how much car you’re getting. The money you’d save in comparison to the a class would cover your fuel for quite a while. From memory my trip computer said 36.5mpg long term (I believe it records over a 200hr period before it resets).

If you’re looking for a ‘hot hatch’ the Leon 2.0tsi is about as close as you’re going to get on the scheme. I know they get referred to as a ‘warm hatch’ these days as they’re about 100bhp down on the current hot hatches but I think 190bhp is more than enough power for everyday use.

Totally agree with DBtruth as above….. can’t comment on the Merc but I imagine it’s a LOT of car for the AP….. but I am just coming to the end of my 3 years with a 1.8 Leon FR DSG (due to handover next week) and even now it still brings a large grin to my face every time I climb into it. I just love driving it and I can only imagine that the 2.0tsi is even better, and I’ve averaged 37 mpg without ever hitting motorways!

In fact the 2.0tsi is what I would have been changing to, but SWMBO dictates that this time we ‘need’ an SUV, so just waiting on an Ateca 1.5 to come any day now.

I’m sure the Merc is a lovely car but the difference in AP would indeed buy quite a bit of fuel!

I doubt you’d get a 2.0TSi Leon just yet, they’re having issues with WLTP compliance.

I know they’re on Motabilty search but they’re not on Seat’s official price list.

If I seem a little strange, that's because I am.

                    Skoda Karoq SEL.
