EV’s don’t need as much servicing as ICE cars. Indeed Tesla don’t even set a service schedule for the Model 3. Knowing how Motability decide which schedule to choose, usually the cheapest less frequent. Could the savings on service costs be one of the reasons they are pushing EV’s?

I doubt Mota care much about that, my Tiguan has a two year service schedule, and all the VW garage did was reset the service light on the dash after talking to Motability (I’d done 14,000 miles)
A week later I got an email saying the radiator bottle needed topping up, but I just did it myself rather thn drive back…
There’s some reason EV’s are being pushed, I suspect government interference, but tbh it is not a bad thing, as it gives access to a lot of cars most people would never be able to afford outside the scheme, with very low running costs (if home charging)October 31, 2023 at 2:20 pm #241012If you’ve got the ability to charge at home and you don’t regularly travel huge miles then an EV is the perfect option for Motability customers. The only expense they have is fuel and a BEV will come in at a fraction of the cost for the 200-300 miles your charge gets you. Plus there’s the wear/tear from frequent short journeys that combustion engines suffer where an electric motor doesn’t and that’s got to be better for Motability’s servicing/repairs budget.
Also, if you’re disabled through lower limb problems but can still use pedals, regenerative braking can save a lot of discomfort over a long journey. I have found that with adaptive cruise control on motorways and then using regen elsewhere I barely use the brake pedal and even then it’s mostly just to hold the car once stopped. For those with mental health issues including stress or anxiety, the more relaxing drive I’ve found from an EV would help to some extent. Obviously there’s not much you can do about the other nutters on the road.
With demand as it is in comparison to plans and forecasts made years ago, I’m pretty sure Motability are getting a pretty good deal on purchase prices right now as well.
All that combines to a good reason or two for them to push EVs without harping on about the emissions, environment and (God forbid) global warming.

October 31, 2023 at 3:09 pm #241026One of the reasons I believe Motability is/will be pushing EV’s, is down to the government still having the ZEV mandate in place (starting next year), even though the date has been pushed back to 2025.
Pushing the date back to 2035 is looking like there is going to be an impact on manufacturers as its likely to delay retail customers making the switch. With that in mind, in comes Motability. who will be more than willing to except BEV’s, probably at a better price than they might have otherwise done if the ban wasn’t delayed. Give it a year or two the scheme will be full of BEV’s and if your lucky there might be some nice ones to! Those who don’t want to go BEV will see their choces dwindle over the next couple of years.
November 1, 2023 at 8:46 am #241164I don’t have a problem with MB pushing EV’s in fact I have ordered one which I could never afford to buy. But what I do object to is them pushing EV’s at the expense of offering MB customers the other options which are still available for retail customers to buy.
Although EV’s are expanding, they have not expanded into the large estate car area, which many wheelchair users need for the space, so we still need as many options on MB as there are on the Retail Market. MB being able to do that, I assume is why the people at the top of MB are getting mega bucks.

This is our issue, Mrs Joe is uses a wheelchair and our current Octavia estate is perfect. The SUV’s that a lot of the manufacturers seem to favour are too high for her.
November 1, 2023 at 10:42 am #241181@Jojoe you can get a wheechair in the back of the ioniq 6 easy enough on its side however, you have to check the seating and egress regress.

Keso and Jojoe you will get a manual wheelchair if folded and not much else, but most electric wheelchairs would not fit. Although it will normally suit my needs as I only do short journeys, but go on holiday twice a year, in which one of my PA’s will also have to take her hatchback car as well to get room for all three of our stuff . This was never needed with my current Kia Optima estate.
November 1, 2023 at 11:08 am #241188Only problem with the ionic 6 is it’s not a hatchback. The boot aperture looks too narrow (top to bottom) to get her scooter in. Though when travelling on holiday the scooter goes on the back seat with cases in the boot, when we arrive and unpack the scooter then goes in the boot.

Hyundai missed out big time not making it a hatchback. Shame really as its now off my list, due to daughters chair.
November 1, 2023 at 11:39 am #241194Keso, to be honest, if it would have been a hatchback, I don’t think it would have made much difference due to the very slopping back.
