AnonymousDoes anyone know?
Which small/med/auto cars on the scheme offer auto lane centring steering
The system that could steer itself and keep between the white lines for short distances
All a bit of a minefield when looking at specs was hoping the fiesta/Corsa might have such a thing.
I find trawling through badly laid out specs quite confusing
Any pointers appreciated and most welcome

Doesn’t specifically answer your questions as the Tiguan I’m hopefully collecting today isn’t a small car but I believe the lane centreing doesn’t work below 40mph – it’s effectively a motorway function as opposed to an around town one. Not sure how it works on other brands/models.

January 31, 2020 at 7:35 am #104687Colin, good luck. I want to see pics and a new post from you ASAP. ?
? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?

ShaineSuzuki swift sz5 or Jeep Renegade limited have Lane keep assist I believe.
January 31, 2020 at 7:48 am #104689Delta,
In the UK, BMW call it ‘Lane Departure Warning’ and is a standard feature, as far as I can see, on all of the 1 Series models.
YouTube link here.? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?
January 31, 2020 at 8:41 am #104691Just be careful not to confuse the two technologies – there’s a big difference between lane departure systems which just warn you and those which actively affect the steering to keep you in lane. The former can be as little as a light or a beep to get your attention

January 31, 2020 at 9:12 am #104696The thing to look out for is the word “Assist” when checking out lane features.

Good point Colin and my bad. I didn’t read the original post correct. The BMW system is an alert only. It doesn’t actively steer the car.

January 31, 2020 at 10:25 am #104706We turned the BMW system off. If you move across a white line without using the indicators, it beeps at you. So, moving out to pass a parked car on a deserted road, it forces you to indicate. I don’t much like car systems that try to dictate how I drive! And I certainly wouldn’t want a system that steers me back into the lane I’ve chosen to leave.
January 31, 2020 at 10:40 am #104711I have to be honest Wigwam, I’m with you. I appreciate it’s a safety feature but does it not encourage driving without attention? It’s certainly not anything I would need in a car.

PhiljbThe Tiguan system doesn’t steer for you it just offers a little resistance if you try and change lanes without indicating above 40mph, the system comes into its own at night on unlit roads or in heavy rain, you can leave it on all the time if you want, it just makes long motorway drives more relaxing.
I like it but don’t rely on it.As technology improves these systems will get better and better.
January 31, 2020 at 12:05 pm #104726I can’t see it.. If it needed the car to tell me I’m out of my lane in poor visibility, I think I should be driving more slowly and looking more carefully.

AnonymousHi Looking at the replies
I think you can now appreciate that I am not alone in being baffled 🙂
Thanks everyone and thanks Colin spot on 🙂
Just got back from viewing the new Ultimate auto Corsa and got the all important thumbs up from the wife 🙂
Impressive spec for £99 AP and it is now on the short list as it meets our needs now we are in our 60s

Clipped wingsCouldn’t agree more, Wigwam. As a former aviator assisted by sophisticated flight management and autopilot/throttle systems, the idea of autonomous vehicles allowing lack of driver vigilance is ludicrous IMHO. Tesla autopilot is probably the best, but the fatal Arizona collision with a pedestrian showed the folly of an inattentive driver. Machine learning will rapidly improve, but I wonder how it will cope with parked cars on narrow two way streets and a busy double mini roundabout should provide plenty of thrills. My Touran has AAC cruise control. Used it once on a quiet dual carriageway. Not for me. Pain in the proverbial. Our roads are often too busy and driving erratic even for standard cruise control

MikeDelta that corsa looks fab what engine has it ? Is the equipment good spec ?

AnonymousHaving driven accident free since 1977 and having experienced the continual congestion on our roads I am all for new technology that may for example help me to miss a child running out into the road.
Used wisely the new technology may well save you and others when a broken down vehicle emerges from the fog on one of our so called smart motorways.
Mike here is the spec sheet which inc matrix led lights 10 inch touch screen active cruise control and many many more safety features.

January 31, 2020 at 5:21 pm #104749As we get older all this tech will be a godsend, but whether you like it or not its coming our way soon.
Tesla have completed millions of autonomous driving miles with very few accidents and ALL current models are being monitored with info relating to parked, cars roundabouts being logged, downloaded and used to fine tune the autonomous software.
I firmly believe that when all cars are autonomous there will be few accidents on the road. However the period when some are and some aren’t may be different.

WinstonThat’s the thing eh Brydo, the technology is getting better by the month with the constant testing and tuning of their software
but we are a long way off from every council estate packed full of £30/40k cars ??
so until shell suit boab is able to afford one then it’s going to be a bit of a chaotic mix with an a super duper self driving car that should never make a mistake on the same roads as a maniac in a 400 quid banger who isn’t following the rules of the road trying to get to the kebab shop as fast as possible before it closes ??

WinstonThat generation or 2 crossover period is going to be fun lol
im all for it! The technology! Not the wacky races part
January 31, 2020 at 6:39 pm #104756Winston you paiñt a very bleak picture of life on a scheme lol but if you CAN afford a autonomous car whilst on a scheme you can send the car for your kebab while you have another beer.
The roll out of autonomous cars will be gradual but towards the end there will be a scrabbage deal the likes of which we have never seen.

WinstonI just keep it real Brydo lol, I know what the wild streets are like here ? you’d get crackpots trying to plug their fridge freezer and TVs into the charging points! ?
there is no way an autonomous car would be able to drive round my street, if the Council made it a one way then yes but I’ve tried and they say No ?
but I live in hope that one day I’ll be able to get into the car and say “Take me to Glencoe Please” ?????????
and if it’s ever able to come back with a Chinese takeaway for me that lol be the icing on the cake ?
January 31, 2020 at 8:08 pm #104764I personally am looking forward to the tech assistance in the Tiguan, I’ve always been extremely picky about my parking and while I always got car cars as straight as could be in a space, I am constantly readjusting the higher driving position Volvo as I’m not happy with it. I also find it harder to judge the remaining distance at the front despite the last car, a Peugeot 407 having a HUGE nose on it. I’m trying to blame the difference in seating position as opposed to my abilities so hopefully the 360 camera etc will give me that confidence back 😛

Rhodgie??? BMW drivers turning of the lane assist cause it forces them to use the indicators… brilliant ???
January 31, 2020 at 10:44 pm #104771
WinstonHaha you couldn’t make it up ???
colin just to let you know when it rains heavy ( which is a lot ) and you’ve been driving about a bit the cameras under the wing mirrors can at times become pretty useless , same can happen to the front and rear lol
good thing is if you stick it in reverse you can actually send a skoosh of water over the rear camera which usually clears that camera well ??
February 1, 2020 at 12:30 am #104779Heavy rain doesn’t seem to affect this part of the country much (north east right on the coast) – we do get plenty of high winds though – maybe it blows the rain away lol.
