I was wondering what people’s thoughts are on whether it is best to order this Q or wait for Q2. To be honest whatever we order this Q will be a compromise, but I am worried perhaps this is as good as it will get. Do you think the AP’s will increase in Q2 and what are the chances of more vehicles coming onto the scheme. It would be great if motability would give us some sort of indication as to what direction they are going in.

I harm in ordering now with an agreement from the dealer that if AP goes down they’ll reduce accordingly. Best to have that in an email from the sales executive.

I’m a bit pessimistic  about pricing, manufacturers tried it on in Q1 claiming Brexit, I very much believe Q2 will go up or remain high due to the excuse of ‘increased demand’ as dealers reopen doors and anticipate more orders. Either way… the advanced payments for many vehicles have become stupidly high for what’s on offer IMO.

if you have decided definateley what car you are going to order then the best bet is to order now but get the dealer to agree to canc and reorder if the ap goes down. at least that way you are protected.

but if you havent made that decision then you may as well wait.

Past experience has shown that we often debate, predict and  give our thoughts on the following quarter and usually it turns out to be almost a carbon copy of the existing.

Our X1 will be three years old in July, so we would normally look in April for a replacement.  We’ll be keeping it at least another year though as for us there’s nothing better on the scheme.  Maybe next year something inspiring will turn up with a sensible AP, but I can’t imagine what.

Totally agree Wigwam, I have the X1 2.0d sport Xdrive it’s a brilliant car and I can’t see the point in changing.

I’m not anticipating large scale changes and suspect that it will be like most quarters i.e.some AP’s will go up (some by daft amounts), others will come down (but by less amounts than some of the increases), some vehicles will disappear for no obvious reason and there will be a few surprises.

On another thread somebody posted that a few new cars were being negotiated for possible inclusion, notably the Toyota Highlander Hybrid (like the RAV4 but bigger, better equipped and 4WD) and Mercedes EQA electric SUV, although I should imagine that AP’s for both will be very high if they do appear.

You’re right will be like EVERY quarter some will go up and some will go down.

I presently have an X1 and have put an order in for another X1 due in May l will be extremely upset if the AP goes down in Q2

Although those ordering in Q2 might be quite pleased! In reality, the X1 is very keenly priced, but it’s due to be replaced by an all new model next year so I don’t think that they are likely to hike the prices up much, if at all. However, once thing is for certain with Motability and that is that nothing is for certain!

If they bring out the Land Cruiser they must also add the Kia Sorrento, Mits Shogun and Sante Fae.

                          Let’s keep dreaming.

No chance of the Land Cruiser ever appearing, but another poster was told by Motability that they are negotiating for the possible inclusion of the Toyota Highlander, which sits between that and the RAV4. Surprising, as it’s over £50k, but it’s a hybrid and they seem to ignore the price caps with those.  I had a Mitsubishi Shogun for a week a number of years ago and, to this day, it remains the worst car I have ever driven. My mate has a new Santa Fe and I’m not impressed with it, but it is big and well equipped. No idea why the Sorrento isn’t on the scheme.

I’m in love with the Sorrento, it’s absolutely stunning. If that comes on to the scheme next quarter, expect to see my other half on eBay so I can afford the AP. ?

I think we could see a revision of the rules and limits on RRP’s AP’s  and possibly BHP particularly relating to electric vehicles and in reality this is already happening with advance payments. We will soon have to adjust to Kw.

I hope that you are right, as a relaxation of the arbitrary caps and limits is long overdue, but I have learned to manage my expectations with Motability! I would think that wholesale changes would be more likely to happen in Q1 rather than Q2, but of course when Q1 was being planned they weren’t sure whether there would be a trade deal with the EU or not, so it was ‘steady as she goes’. Maybe, just maybe, they had a plan B which they held back on and will release with Q2. We can but hope, but I won’t be holding my breath!

I think it’ll be very similar but with yet more focus on additional electric vehicles on the scheme – if the Skoda Enyaq gets in it’ll be brilliant but beyond my means.

on the subject of electric cars I feel that Motsbility customers should get incentives for electric cars – like private customers get a £3k discount on electric vehicles (used to be £5k).

I still find the AP’s are so baffling – even after all these years – it’d be interesting to understand how Motability Operations arrive at AP’s some seem so bizarre & albeit there are nil AP cars – for my needs i require an SUV type vehicle for access abs comfort & auto again due to my disabilities etc…

i have no savings so the ability to access GCB now against an AP is a real help, and most AP’s way beyond my financial limitations.

I used to say that if I were on mastermind, my specialist subject would be the Motability Scheme & AP’s lol.

I think most people accept the need for some limits but perhaps a £45000 or 50000 rrp for electric and £40000 for others in today’s climate and £7.5k and 5k limits would be reasonable. Perhaps a 250bhp limit on electric. It’s an opportunity for motability to embrace the new technology and encourage it’s members to do likewise.

As PHEV’s aren’t affected by the recent cut in subsidies that seems to be culling a few EV’s from the scheme, I wonder which (if any) PHEV’s might be added in Q2?

As the XC40 T5 Recharge and Peugeot 3008 PHEV’s have both been added during Q1 and are well into the mid £40k’s, is it too much to hope that the BMW X1 XDrive 25e may join? The X-Line version is just under £40k so is cheaper than the Peugeot and would have far better residual values.

I think the arrival of the x1 25e would mean I could cancel the test drives I have booked for the middle of April, even with the slightly dated technology.

It’s a tempting prospect for us too if it comes on the scheme. We’e due to change in July and would prefer to go a bit smaller but nothing inspired.  I can’t get worked up about the latest displays and gadgets.  The X1 has knobs and switches that work well, clear dials and a good display screen for the audio and satnav.

I agree. It’s almost identical to our dash in the Gran Tourer which is great but wouldn’t mind a bit of a change.

Out of interest, is the backlighting of the analogue instrument display in the X1 now white, including at night, rather than the trademark BMW orange? I know it sounds silly, but I hated the orange backlighting and it used to infuriate me on my 5 Series that during the day it was illuminated white yet you couldn’t configure it to stay white at night ?

Also, is there a way to display your current speed as a digital number in the dash? I drive 3 different makes of car on a regular basis and they all have it and I find it incredibly useful just to have a number showing rather than looking at dials. As my kids would say, these are all ‘first world problems’ but I’m sure that I’m not the only person who can find little things irritating ?

Brilliant. Thanks Wigwan. You’ve really got me thinking now. The X1 was towards the bottom of my shortlist due to it being a bit old tech and also because I would have been adding a lot of options. However, I’m now wondering if the standard X-Line spec would be sufficient?

I would have added Harman Kardon (£600), sliding rear seats (£350) and Technology Pack 2 (£1,250) which is Head Up Display, bigger sat nav & digital dash. Following feedback from you and others, the standard sound system is pretty good, the rear seat backs (only) may adjust slightly as standard (if the boot is a bit tight for the wheelchair). I’ve never had HUD so wouldn’t miss it, but have always had the higher end (bigger) multimedia systems in previous BMW’s. However, I think that the standard one in newer models is probably better than it was and certainly better than the dreadful one in our Tiguan. Also, I think I’ve just worked out that the digital dash upgrade in the X1 isn’t a full one and if the speed is displayed as a number as standard then that helps discount that.

So, I guess my final question (for now!) is this. What, if any, options would you (or any other X1 owners) say are well recommended, either because you are glad you opted for them or because you wish you had? Thanks in anticipation.

Glos Guy, I believe the digital dash is what we already have.  It’s the area between and below the dials. Pressing the end of the indicator stalk cycles between various displays. Standard is miles, trip, outside temp, date and speed limit, you can also choose engine temperature, fuel range, current mpg and digital speed.  This automatically changes to show satnav turn indications too.

At the time we opted for 566 style wheel (free), electric fold mirrors, sun protection glass and park distance control – the last gave front parking sensors.  Obviously specs have now changed.

It annoys me that there were no map lights except as part of a silly price option package, and would have liked a reversing camera again part of something else unrelated to bump up the price.  MrsW would have like a sunroof.  Otherwise it’s all good.

If the X1 PHEV gets on the scheme I might have to look at all this stuff again…
