December 31, 2024 at 11:10 am #295528£1895 for the cheapest Automatic Ford Focus 🙄. The Focus was always our go to car, we’ve had 4 of them over the years, the AP was usually around £500 – £700. This is getting crazy, I can see more people leaving the scheme with these AP’s.

The only person who got all his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.

December 31, 2024 at 9:13 pm #295558The criteria for VAT exemption is very strict. It only applies to brand new cars, you have to have permanent adaptations fitted prior to registration and you always had to be a wheelchair user. Criteria may have changed, as they tightened up on it as some people were buying VAT free and then selling at a profit. The info can be found on the HMRC website.
Things must have changed cause you only had to be disabled but not necessarily a wheelchair user, any adaptation counted towards getting the VAT off (even a steering ball?) but you needed to be able to justify it to HMRC. It can (could?) also be applied to a used car but only on the dealers profit margin that gets paid to the Gov. So for example if a dealer makes £1k on a car, then deducts his expenses of say £500, then you could claim the VAT back off the other £500? I bought a bike that way once 😁
Because of it being abused, you could littery buy a new car every day if you had the money… they changed it to one every 3 years?
As I said thing have changed and it’s been a few years for me but one of my friends still buys a new car every 3 years.
December 31, 2024 at 9:31 pm #295559Looks like Kia have updated their price list.

@Rhodgie I’ve just found the guidance on the Gov.uk website and it still says you must be a wheelchair user and the adaptations must be substantial and permanent. This is to get VAT exemption on the purchase price of the car. Lesser adaptations are eligible for VAT exemption on the cost of the adaptation only.My wife is a full time wheelchair user and we now need an electric person hoist fitted, so would easily qualify. The car I’d like would save me around £15k in VAT. Tempting!
January 1, 2025 at 1:42 am #295562I knew they’d changed and tightened the rules but not by how much, good to hear they clamped down on the abuse… I’d heard a few horror stories about how some folk had been exploiting the scheme including some paralympic athletes.
January 1, 2025 at 7:59 am #295563It looks like the Motability Scheme website has been updated overnight and is now showing prices for Q1 2025:

Yes, the limit of one car every 3 years was brought in to stop the abuse. As you say, some people were regularly buying expensive cars VAT free and then selling them at a profit. The two main criteria of having to be a wheelchair user and the car having ‘permanent and substantial adaptations’ remained though.

January 1, 2025 at 8:38 am #295567The new Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV 4WD has joined the scheme, in Premium trim at £6,999. Nice to see a big car join the scheme for once.
January 1, 2025 at 8:58 am #295569Hi Glos guy,
Saw one on the road. Very imposing. Same price as Honda CrV and I wouldn’t be interested in paying that much for a three year lease. See your car has gone back up.
The Mazda CX 60 prices look far more reasonable for a large, well built, high quality offering.

January 1, 2025 at 9:00 am #295571Honda HR-V 1.5 eHEV Advance 5dr CVT is back on the scheme at a £999. Q3 it was £1,999, so represents great value for a fuel efficient hybrid.
January 1, 2025 at 9:02 am #295572Volvo V60 looks good if anyone needs a big estate.

or alternatively the Subaru Forester / Outback. Both exactly the AP as the v60 at £3,999

I love the look of the front and side of the new Santa Fe (looks like the previous generation Discovery), but the back end is problematic for me. The very low down lights look all wrong. Same with the new Kona. Hyundai need to replace whoever designs the rear ends of their cars 😂
Yes I noticed that the Tucson is now more than @kezo and I paid, but anyone who managed to get one during the period when the AP was slashed to £2,999 got themselves an absolute bargain.
I liked the CX-60 in spite of its bland exterior styling and, in fact, it came 2nd in our search last year. Two things stopped me getting it though. Firstly I would have wanted to add a pack or two to the car which, annoyingly, when the car first came on the scheme were bundled with it. That made it very expensive. Also, the reviews of it weren’t great.
I’ve now looked through all the new additions and think I’d still choose the Tucson if ordering today, but I’d have to take a look at the Santa Fe first to see what the Premium version loses over the Ultimate Tucson. The only issue (other than the back end) is that it’s the same PHEV setup as the Tucson but in an even heavier car, and the Tucson is thirsty enough when the battery is depleted 🤔
January 1, 2025 at 10:40 am #295575Agree. Setting indicators so low down must comply with regulations, but not a great design, especially covered in road salt and grime.
I saw a review of the new CX-80 (70 in USA) and some of the ride and PHEV integration issues of the 60 have been addressed. As essentially identical forward of the B pillar, hopefully the 60 has similar improvements. At £3999, the base model is a lot of car compared with certain others. A new Subaru Forrester due soon and Outback all new model also on the way.
No regrets with the Touran Match. No extras and pleased to have beaten the £750 cut off. No thrills, but immensely practical for wheelchair plus grandchildren, who love the pano roof and sun shades. Quick enough and 39-43 mpg – no cables!
January 1, 2025 at 11:09 am #295576A while since I posted, Q1 2025 does not seem to bring any real stand out bargains.

Really disappointing update, the new year update usually beefs up the fleet of cars to choose from bringing in several new options that slowly get removed over the coming months. This time we’ve not really had anything stand out.
For the first time I’m looking at privately leasing a car of my own choice. Things like MOT, servicing and general maintenance don’t really carry a significant financial burden with new cars with warranties and such, also most people can get RAC cover with their banks for free, if not it’s only a fiver a month!
January 1, 2025 at 12:49 pm #295581Prices are just not affordable, looking for a modest golf size hatch in automatic starting at 2k and that’s excluding any extras needed like lumber support or heated seats.
After 25 years on the scheme I’m looking at private vehicle route. I totally get that the car market dictates a lot of the price trends but can’t help feel motability have lost their way.

Totally agree, it’s the same with the automatic Focus, cheapest is £1850, they were always £500-£700 for a decent spec model.
January 1, 2025 at 12:59 pm #295583Very disappointing that the Škoda Elroq with the Maxx pack has been taken off.
