Optional extras

      Hi All

Today I’ve been looking again at the xc40 but I would want a few extras of around £3000, I understand that the extras are at my expense and they have to be paid for upfront however previously I would of contacted the insurance and added these on to the premium just in case the car got stolen or wrote off…

So I contacted motability to see how this works with them insuring the vechile and I was politely told that the extras are nothing to do with them or the insurance and no option to add them on.

What do you do regarding options?

If this has already been covered could someone please point me in the right direction.

      Thanks

As you pay in full for the extras Motability doesn’t add them on to insurance as they are happy with the standard car payout if it was wrote off because you’ve paid the extras they don’t lose out.

but remember you can still negotiate a discount on extras and the AP

the search box on the right hand side of the page shows a few results. Here’s one.

It’s indeed true that Motability considers options to be a matter for the customer only and there is no need to have any specific notes on the insurance, but if the car was ever written off then I would be wanting a pro-rata refund of the cost of the extras, as well as a pro-rata refund of the AP, especially if it wasn’t our fault. In that situation, Motability would be out of pocket.

As I don’t have first hand experience of this, I would be very interested to know if anyone has been in this situation and what the outcome was in relation to the value of the optional extras.

This has got me thinking sideways with the insurance cover on any extra’s we add to the car and this has me wondering what happens if say we added heated seats or a top of the range satnav as an extra and then after a year or so they stop working, do we have any guarantee from the manufacture to fix the seats or satnav like they would do with any other standard part of the car.

I think that maybe we would have to pay for the repairs out of our pocket or just leave them as they are in a debunked way until the car goes back.

Luckily for us most of these sorts of thing are reliable these days so should last at least 3 years.

Thought it was a bit like a credit agreement whereby they are obliged to fix it

they must have some written agreement with RSA.  If I purchased an XC40 with standard 18″ alloys then decided to upgrade to the £2000+ 21″  and found my car on bricks I would expect RSA to replace my car with the 21″ wheels and not the 18″ ones.  also motability must know about this stuff for when you  goto kwikfit for replacment tyres they always authorise the right ones.

                  Hi ldc7080

This is what the debate is about, will they or won’t they, and in your scenario with your wheels being nicked I think Motability would just replace with standard wheel that the car would have come with had you not upgraded them.

Maybe they would replace like for like but I can’t help feeling they won’t and best you could hope for is they give you the money the standard wheels cost for you to offset against the more expensive wheels.

                  Just my thinking.

Yes, any failures of manufacturers fitted optional extras will be covered for failure by the three year warranty.

However, RSA will only cover the standaed carreplacement costs, because they have not agreed to cover the extras withbtye iwner, motability.

They will replace car without extras
