Nissan UK on the brink

Looks like Nissan UK is on the cusp of going under.  They’re losing dealers hand over fist partly due to restructuring and some are voluntarily leaving to get into other Marques quickly.  There isn’t a Nissan dealer on the Isle of Wight now.  I see dealers have lost 70% of their profit in the past 12 months with some 40% operating at a loss with Nissan telling them basically they dont care and sell cars at a loss from a quick Google

I know our local is jumping in the next months which is a win overall as they’re going to a brand that doesn’t have a dealer nearby which will be interesting.

It’s going to upset a lot of locals who all drive Nissans because of the local connection.  I hope they find new investment as that’s a lot of peoples jobs up in the air and it’d be a real shame to lose another big player esp if they get snapped up by a Chinese brand like Volvo did.

I live in the North East, and it would be like when the pits closed. The effect it would have on the region as a whole would be catastrophic as its not just Nissan alone that has one of the biggest workforces in the area, its also the sister companies that rely on Nissan contracts that would also go under.

What has been a real shame over the decades has been the reliance upon Nissan in the region. There’s little else in or around the area that has provided jobs for generations of family’s. There’s been little investment and infrastructure in anything else from previous governments who have been happy to just give Nissan some hush money and kicked the can down the road. It’d a similar story with Hitachi Rail facing a very bleak winter due to once promised contracts going overseas.

The saying has always went “It’s grim up north” but it looks like it’s going to get a whole lot worse. Not really a surprise when most MP’s think Manchester is the furthest North you can go.

Its Nissan Japan that is in danger of folding, they are in serious financial trouble.

Of course, if there are any cutbacks, it will be the factories abroad that will take the hit, and the selection of models.

          It is not good.

Nissan Renault and Mitsubishi are an alliance, Mitsubishi no longer import to the UK and Europe, giving they share components and platforms this could have serious implications for Renault

            Which Mobility Car

I do worry, this feels different to 1999 when Renault bailed them out, or the times the UK government stepped in to keep the workforce in Sunderland, the whole industry is suffering. I believe 6000 jobs at Nissan Sunderland and 20 000 associated jobs in the area.  Having spoken to Nissan Employees directly, the focus has been taken off their pay negotiations, there is real worry in the ranks. The Nissan CFO has quit and there are talks of Honda stepping in, sounds like paper talk to me. I fear there are just too many obstacles in the way, the collapse of Northvolt has just handed all the power (excuse the pun) to China. Change is coming and it may be quicker than we would hope.

Difficult to see Honda stepping in having shuttered its modern Swindon factory. Can be grim down south too, but Nissan would be an utter disaster. Let’s hope the muppets in Whitehall can withdraw some of the loony EVangelist policies or Toyota’ s hybrid UK production could also be threatened. Mrs T brought all three to the UK along with other electronic companies. Most remaining uk brands owned by India, BMW, VW and China. Stelantis CEO resigned today after disastrous sales figures, especially in the USA.

For Mobility this could have some serious finacial implactions as regards resale values

I agree I have read it is world wide affecting all markets.

Our local Brindley Nissan has parted company with Nissan after 30 +years changing to Hyundai, they will still carry out warranty, servicing and parts for Nissan/Mitsubishi.

With manufactures like Ford, Fiat group etc cutting production are we going to see vehicle limited choice and shortages again.

Our nearest dealership in Arbroath has switched to Omoda/Jaecoo. Still listed as a Nissan service centre.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares has also resigned earlier than expected, amid a sharp drop in vehicle sales. It seams most manufacturers are affected in one way or another.

In September Nissan was to buy back 5% of its own shares worth around $550m from Renault, as the two companies rebalance their alliance.

Factory workers at the Sunderland plant have been on stand downs a number of times in the last few month. Meaning they’re given time off with pay, but then have to work the hours back in overtime.

There’s always talk of Nissan closing for years now, but the government woukd keep throwing money at them to keep it open, but theres a real worry now that this could be the end.

You do have to worry about its workforce,as manufacturing in the North East in general is a declining sector with really poor pay these days.
