Hello all!  Just wanted some advice we are going for either an x1 or Tiguan. Can’t make mind up.

Anyway before we order we just wanted to ask , if we ordered a car through mobility scheme and the end of the 3 year lease can we buy the car out?

How does that work and sorry to ask but do we qualify for “mobility scheme” customer discounts (I know it’s cheeky!)

Can we pay monthly if we decide to buy?

also any pros/cons of buying/not buying the car outright at the end of lease

and of course any experiences you’ve had after care or advice is appreciated.

sorry to ask but just new to the scheme.

We rang our dealership bVW 4 times but they never ring back or available to talk. So having to ask on here. So glad we have this forum

      thank you

Hello Jellybeanqueen, welcome to the form.

Yes you can buy the car you have from Motability at the end of your lease, it’s what I had to do for my piece of mind after failing the change from DLA to PIP but that’s another story.

Motability insist on cash on the nail if you’re buying the car so bank loans are a way to go.

As to whether your Motability car is worth buying at the price they offer you is another matter as some say the price is good and others say no and there is no negotiations with Motability on prices but with myself I felt the price was not a lot different from going to a franchise dealer and buying but you have the knowledge of the cars full history and how it’s been treated. There is no guarantee or after care once you bought the car as it belongs to you.

My car has adaption’s so that has to be taken into account as well because if you bought a car outside of Motability you would have to pay for any adaption and there fitting too but of course such adaption would already be fitted to said car if buy from Motability.

At the end of your lease you could of course just buy the car on behalf of a family member for example and just order another car for yourself on Motability, again if you think the price is right.

Buying your car would also mean having to deal with all the things that go with owning a car like insurance, MOT’s, services, licence fund (road tax)* and not forgetting breakdown insurance as that’s an important thing when your disabled.

*you should be able to get the road fund tax for free so don’t worry about that part.

A word on road tax – you get one tax disk free – but if you have a motability car it put on that so its used up which means if you have another car you have to pay for that road tax in full ( at least thats what i have been told) the big benefit is that say your new car on motability has annual road tax of £1250 in the first year then it drops to £140 by the time you bought the car it will be down to flat rate road tax which is a big saving when you get the car

That’s correct Gary, just one tax allowance and when I bought my Motability car I only had 10 points PIP so only a 50% reduction on the road tax but having read a few nightmares about DVLA miss-placing paperwork while making the change from 100% to 50% disabled class in the log book so I decided to change the tax class back to “Private” because the road fund tax is only £30 a year anyway on my car.

Got my 12 PIP points back now after appeal courts and free to have Motability tax my next car as disabled class.

The only downside to changing my car to private class apart from costing me a whopping big £15 a year is that a lot of councils, Bournemouth and Poole for example check your registration for disabled class when parking in council car parks so when I was in that area in February I had to pay in the off street car parks even displaying the Blue Badge.

Another thing to remember is if you opt for free road tax then you will have to continue to adhere to certain car usage rules

*Registered in the disabled person’s name or their nominated driver’s name.
*It must be only be used for the disabled person’s personal needs. That means the vehicle can’t be used by the nominated driver for their own personal use.
