New car first impressions

I picked up my BMW i4 edrive35 sport yesterday and here are my first impressions. I definitely made the right decision, the car is absolutely perfect for my needs. I’ve never driven a smoother car, it floats over potholes and speed bumps but then there’s no roll in the corners. I’ve changed from a Mercedes CLA180 shooting brake premium plus and although the i4 sport is the lowest trim it feels so much nicer inside. It might not have the full leather trim but the seats for me are much more comfortable and the driving position’s better, the pedals are more central and it just feels right. I thought the Mercedes drove well but this is in a different class.

Now onto charging, range and everything electric! When I picked the car up it was 1°C and it obviously hadn’t been pre heated, I did just over 100 miles, a mixture of all driving styles and conditions and at the end of the day I finished up at 3.1 mpkwh, as I say that includes lots of stopping and everything getting cold, a heavy right foot and a good amount of sport mode. On the motorway it glides along at 75 and on flat ground with two passengers would easily return 4+ mpkwh. I struggled setting up octopus and the ohme  charger last night but managed to work it out this morning so it’s set to charge tonight from 11:30 to 5:30 which will get me fully charged. From my calculations in 6 hours I can charge the car by 60% so even at 3 mpkwh I’ll pay 2.5p per mile. Which is amazing. Other things to mention, the sound system is brilliant even if I’m still tweaking the levels. It’s a car that you can cruise along in and it’s like floating but stick it in sport and its a completely different beast. I was worried over the seats not being as adjustable as first told but for me they are perfect, soft and comfortable, but then supportive when you want to push it. It’s hard to describe just how good the car is. The only thing I can say is if you’re considering one please take one for an extended test drive and you’ll see what I mean, and for those waiting for delivery,  I hope the time flies, the wait is worth it.

I’ll do a more in depth review next weekend and update on real range and any challenges with charging,  but for the moment I’ll just say, and I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’ve seen the future and it’s garlic bread,  sorry electric ?

When you look at the pic as a whole, it nothing short of architectural brilliance. The way the car and garage door subtly compliment each other, is just brilliant and certainly nothing silly about it!

          @Kezo, thanks!

Amusing reading the various comments, both positive and a few negative.

I honestly thought it would be the aluminium window trim in place of black shadow line which would be more controversial, but no, it’s the blue accents which have proved most divisive ?

The interior aluminium mesh option looks great in place of piano black too.

It’s probably the light, it’s a very grey grey, but like with most metallics it does change with the light. In direct sunlight today, it had a smokey tinge to it.

San Remo Green is very classy too, when we picked ours up, another customer was picking up a 420i coupe in SR green and it did look good.

Has anyone downloaded over air updates and how have you found them beneficial.

I did see that they had a free 3 month trial on them.

Just wondering if anyone has had any thoughts/experience on the HUD? I’ve been trying to decide between the tech pack and the pro pack for a while and I keep changing my mind!

I like the HUD and it’s mildly configurable. I enjoy it being there basically but it’s not something I would have paid for if it hadn’t been part of the Tech Pack. The Harmon Kardon is very good however so for me the Tech Pack would take precedence over the Pro Pack.

@Ryan You can go for the M Sport Pro pack and select HK as an individual option for £900, I think the Pro is worth it aesthetically and for the most sportiest feel with adaptive suspension, but if you generally don’t accelerate much and just want the car for a luxury experience then tech pack would be more fitting.

Thought I’d provide an update after almost two weeks of ownership.

Efficiency: Overall average is now now 3.5 miles per KWh. A longish round trip yesterday of 120 miles using A roads to North Norfolk and back (so fairly flat!) gave me 4.4 m/kWh. This was doing 60 where possible and included a couple of easy overtakes just using eco pro mode, so very happy with that.

I prefer the regenerative braking in Adaptive mode, this lets the car coast when you lift off the throttle, but brakes itself if you approach a roundabout or junction or slower traffic in front. Really clever stuff.

Have finally found a comfortable driving position!

Handling is much more “sporty” than our XC40 but the Volvo’s suspension was definitely better at soaking up bumps and ridges.

Running costs so far are peanuts as long as you do it at home and on a smart EV tariff. I charged from 54% to 85% the other night for £1.58. This would have been around £6.50 using standard rate electricity at home or over £16 at a rapid public charger. I’ve calculated that adding a similar amount of miles to our Volvo would have cost between £10 and £12 at today’s petrol prices.

@AKX, I did it, I changed to the Pro pack with HK as an optional extra. Thanks for reminding me this was always an option
