Motability car stolen – refused a courtesy car

Sometime overnight my motability car was stolen, very shaken up as my house was entered to get the keys to it.

I phoned motability as advised by the police to let them know it is stolen. I asked about a courtesy car but apparently they don’t do that?

so what am I meant to do now? I live in the middle of nowhere with a disabled child, he couldn’t go to respite today, we don’t even have a shop in our village. I can’t afford to hire a car or get taxis and she was skirting around what happens if the car is not recovered soon.

is this right? Part of the reason I decided to go the motability route was for the security of knowing that if anything happens to my car they will always keep us on the road with a vehicle suitable for my sons disability.

anyone else been through this who can a advise? I was going to ask further when I phoned back with the crime number after the police had been but they are now shut until Monday.

My Motability Scheme car has been stolen, what should I do?

          https://www.motability.co.uk/contact/faqs/my-motability-scheme-car-has-been-stolen-what-should-i-do

If your car has been stolen, you should notify the police immediately, giving them as much detail as possible, and remember to obtain a crime reference or log number. Then contact RSA Motability who will advise you on what to do next. If help is needed to stay mobile during the time you are without a Scheme car discuss this at the time of registering the claim. The car may be deemed written-off if it is not recovered within 21 days of the date of the theft.

          Your insurance cover

          https://www.motability.co.uk/your-lease/insurance/?tab=tab-2&

          Other benefits
          Loss of use benefit
If you are unable to drive your vehicle after loss or damage, we would aim to provide you with a temporary replacement vehicle. If a temporary replacement vehicle is not suitable for your needs, and an alternative solution to keep you mobile cannot be found, you may be able to claim for ‘loss of use’ benefits.

          Temporary replacement vehicles

          https://www.motability.co.uk/your-lease/temporary-replacement-vehicles/?tab=tab-2&

          Insurance claim

If your car is being repaired at a RSA Motability (RSAM) recommended repairer as part of an insurance claim, you will get a replacement vehicle until your car is fixed, or RSAM will contact you to discuss alternative arrangements. If your car is stolen, you may be required to provide additional information, for example a Crime Reference Number.

Hi Olivia, what a terrible thing to happen to you and it is very upsetting for you.

Step back and take a breath. Digest what others have said above.

You need to contact RSA Motability when you can:

            Car insurance
            Tel: 0300 037 3737
            Minicom: 0800 980 5693

I hope you have more luck with RSA and you are soon mobile again.

Yeah it’s RSA who will supply the courtesy car. When i wrote off our 2018 quasqai aquaplaning they sent a car the same day,  a focus.  I then phoned up again and asked for a like for like car and within 24 hours I had a Mercedes  GLB for weeks while waiting for our 2020 Ateca. I have to admit the process was excellent from start to finish. As I say,  ring RSA.

Sorry to hear this at least they took the car & left everything else alone.

This is pretty much how motability left me when my MG broke down. Europcar don’t have any suitable cars & can’t deliver one to you even if they did. National problem lack of hire cars (funny I called 2 other companies who could deliver an automatic same day).

When I did get one bits of it were broken too. Anyway what I ended up dou g was fill in the complaint form online & that team will get back to you.

In your situation before doing that id call them back explain the situation & just ask them what are you going to do to help me (in the nicest possible way) if you get fobbed off again go fill in the complaint form & start that ball rolling.

I don’t have much experience the first time I called motability for help they really let me down but others have fared better best bet is to call them & just ask the question. What they offered me for a breakdown was:

                1. Payments for not having a car, paid after you get the car back

                2. A taxi account, no good for rural types as I needed to go 6 miles & they sent a taxi from nearest city 30 miles away so 6 mile trip cost £52

                3. Try to get a suitable hire car asap

Theyre there to help so they should sort it.

                Good luck

Having had to use, twice, a stand-in car while mine was repaired due to accidents I’ve found the problems arise if your Motability car is automatic and has adaptions to drive fitted to it.

If you don’t need any them it’s a simple job for the hire company to supply a car but if you need a hoist and adaptions to the controls then these cars need to come from a specialist car hire company. By their nature these companies operate in a niche market so are very expensive and you end up going from pillar to post while they come back to you with completely unsuitable cars because Motability / RSA think you can get by for a few weeks with a bog standard car with no mods and they really should know better.

I cringed at the thought every time someone comes belting up behind me with their phone in their hand because if they hit the back of my car (as with my two claims) it means nothing but a nightmare for me and much goes for any big mechanical problems with the car but thankfully that’s not happened.

You would think with Motability they would put a few of the returned and adapted cars aside for lending out on these occasions and save us the nightmares of dealing with car hire companies that have no experiences of dealing with the disabled, or so it would seem.

Once they find you a car everything is OK though my first encounter seemed to be from a company called Rent-A-Wreck but the seconded time in 2019 every thing was great once I got passed the two or three clueless hire companies and came across someone who knew about the different connection for the scooter / hoist combination.

I pity anyone having to go through this at the moment with all the excuses under the Sun they have up there sleeves for not supply a suitable car.

                    Excellent point.

Sadly I think that would be far to easy for them to think that, or maybe they jus see “ca ching” when cars go back 🙂
