Motability car no longer suitable – can I terminate early?

Hi all, I currently have the MG HS as a motability car for my daughter. The lease isn’t due up until June 25. When we got the car my daughter was only 16 but she has since passed her driving test (a lot faster than we anticipated) but can’t be insured to drive the HS. Would we be able to end the lease early and get another car suitable for U25’s? Is this something motability do? Right now I don’t think we are getting the best use of the vehicle as she needs us to drive her around whereas she would have a lot more freedom if we could get her another car that meets her needs and after all it is really supposed to help her independence. TIA

If your daughter is the recipient of the qualifying benefit then I should think that you would have no difficulty doing an early termination. Just phone Motability tomorrow and explain the situation as above. There is an early termination fee (£250 from memory) and you won’t get any pro-rata refund of any options you added to the car, but you should get a pro-rata refund of the Advance Payment.

Its a change in circumstances and Motability should be very understanding. I dont think there would be the early termination fee and you should get your GCB.

Give them a call and explain the car is no longer suitable, they will be very understanding. Congrats to your lass, that is a big moment for a youngster, getting their driving license.

I can’t see a problem with is tbh. Mobility are good to deal with regarding things like this. They may also reduce the early termination fee or ask for nothing.

              Should be fine

Some 4 yrs ago I changed vehicles 3 times in 3yrs without penalty

Kept the Neighbours curtains twitching lol

But following they told me thats it would be 7yrs before I am able to early terminate again

Ironic as I now have a car I would happy to keep for another 7yrs if allowed lol

                Thank you all.

i called yesterday and was told that we could change if we paid the £250 fee.

she has her heart set on a VW Polo which looks to be around another 6 months wait 🤦‍♀️

I would think you should find an under 25 driver polo, but it will mean you have to travel to nearest dealership with a stock vehicle of the right spec (power is main restriction at 94bhp). You will also have to travel to the dealership twice, once to do the paperwork and then a week later to collect the car!

                    Thanks @swwchris!

I visited a dealer yesterday who advised me basically they wouldn’t give you stock only factory order as his words were no disrespect but we can make £3k on a normal sale where only £250 on a motability sale so stock cars they keep for private sales 😡 We won’t be placing a factory order with them

I’m pleased to hear that they responded as I thought they would. Motability are very good in these situations.

It might be worth your daughter checking out the Hyundai i20. It’s a bit funkier looking than the Polo and has considerably more equipment as standard, especially if she went for the top Ultimate spec at £499. Tons of safety aids as standard and loads of nice kit that she might appreciate (upgraded sound system etc). One of my daughters has a white Ultimate with a black roof and really likes it. Hyundai can usually source most cars in a matter of weeks, as they always have hundreds at Tilbury docks waiting for call off.

If heart is set on a Polo I would still try doing some research (needs a bit of time). We have had two Audis in the last 18 months from different dealerships and both times they were stock cars, with the dealerships treating us like royalty.
