I got one of my daughters added for this very reason. My wife is the beneficiary but can no longer drive. I’m the only driver but was wanting someone else to be able to drive should I be unable to, such as when I am in hospital. Even though our daughter lives a bit outside the normal distance that they stipulate, there was no problem. Just give Motability a call. The insurer will need to speak to your brother in law and he will need to provide his licence details.

I had been on my late dad’s motability insurance for the very same reason with no issues Mike.

I only drove it once in č15 yrs after dad had a GP appointment & the Dr wanted him up the hospital asap but wouldn’t allow him to drive.

Daughter dropped me up to his Dr’s, then I chauffeured him up to hospital & took the car back home.

On a side note: Kudos to MB & DL as well, as after my dad passed, MB allowed me to add my sister on to the insurance until the car had to be returned 2 weeks later.

Mom doesn’t drive & my sister was able to make use of the car while she stopped with mom

You can go to Motability website > your account > insurance and just follow the orders- you can do it online without asking for anyone’s permission. I have someone who lives 15 minutes from me just in case.  So far this “case” haven’t matured of which I am grateful.

Definitely ok to add someone to insurance. Others have written about doing it online; others have said to ring Motability. I have used both. Motability have always been really helpful whatever I phone them for! Last year my son drove the car virtually all the time when we went abroad on holiday and Motability gave me all the important advice for who to contact and to ask for driving, for blue badge parking and the special emissions stickers needed!
