Motability accident questions…

Hi, hopefully someone here can give me an idea of what to expect.

My five month old Enyaq was written off today – someone didn’t stop at a crossroads and came straight out in front of me while I was doing 45-50. The car is a write off, 100% their fault. Props to Skoda though, incredibly tough car and it handled the impact well.

I’m just back from the hospital and will be calling the motability insurance people tomorrow.

I live in quite a remote area so having a car is a lifeline; it’s a 60 mile round trip to the supermarket and it was 45 miles home from the hospital.

My income is the £440-ish from PIP every four weeks so I can’t really afford to run an ICE car.

What should I expect? I presume a courtesy car until a new motability car is sorted, but can I request an electric one? I need hand controls – will they be provided? I do have a spare set of second hand ones, but I’m not sure the hire company would appreciate me having them fitted.

And the replacement car – will they order like for like? Will I be expected to pay another advance payment or does the insurance cover that?

Thanks for any help or insight. Much appreciated 🙂

I’ve had a write off and a recent repair requiring a loan car. Motability provides a loan car (through a 3rd party). I can assure you it’s unlikely it’ll be electric. Last month my loan car, with hand controls (push pull accelerator & steering ball) was an ageing diesel mondeo (luckily not old enough to fall foul of ULEZ).

It’s the adaptations required that seem to reduce your options. Also make sure they don’t try to fob you off with one of those bolt on push/pull kits, they’re not safe. Going from a plug-in-hybrid to a diesel was painful, but at least the fuel consumption should be ok.

        blah, blah, blah

You will get a pro rata refund of the advance payment made for the written off car

You wont get any money back for extras you may have purchased when you got the written off car

They will try and get you to take a hire car on an arrangement where the third parties insurance pays the bill, its quite a weird arrangement where in fact you have to sign a form where you agree to pay hire charges if the other parties insurance do not.

Once written off you can simply order a new car, but have to pay the advance payment (hopefully using whatever pro rata refund you received to put towards the advance payment)

Petrol or diesel. Internal combustion engine.

When my car was written off I got a hire car a diesel 3008 cost me a fortune in fuel and flipping ad blue grrr. Anyway I was in that for ages after 6 months they said were taking the car back and leaving you with nothing after 6 weeks you’ll get your pip back until your new car arrives.

I complained to the CEO at which point an almost new MG HS was swapped in when was a PHEV so gave me 30 miles electric saved me a fortune until my Enyaq arrived.

You can ask if electric is available as europcar do have EVs now.

Yours will be better than mine as you have someone that caused it so you’re not to blame that’ll help I’m sure.

I would wait and see what you’re offered if not suitable email the ceo and tell them.

I’ve just had my car repaired and Direct Line Motability were fantastic. The repair station only had a manual ice car for me to use, which would be totally useless for me so I contacted Direct Line Motability and explained the situation and stated I would prefer a EV which is what they supplied, a MG 4 trophy, a little small but still I enjoyed driving it. The car came from Europcar.

Direct Line Motability do use specialist vehicle leasing / rental companies to source adapted vehicles where there is a need.

With adapted vehicles being short supply, their availability is very dynamic as vehicles are de-hired with short notice & more likely than not, are already shortlisted against someone else’s requirements.

Throw in a specific vehicle type, be it electric /suv / estate etc, the available vehicle list grows even smaller.

So do press DLM for a vehicle with the correct adaptions fitted for your personal need, although you might have to be a little flexible on the type / size of vehicle offered.

Personal experience & I’ve seen a couple of posts recently.

One thing to be aware of is while there doesn’t seem to be any urgency by DLM signing off on a total loss, once it is, Motability do seem set on giving you just 3 months to find > order > take delivery of your new scheme vehicle, otherwise your back receiving pip until you collect your new car.

So be as prepared as you can be for when motability gives you the green light to place a new order & do confirm any specific requirements re: timeline.

Knowing what your next vehicle choice will be, you could potentially place a new order on the same day as Motability gives you the ok, but a car with a 6 month lead time could potentially leave you without a vehicle for 3 months.

                  Tom…

Thanks for the replies, all. I got a call from Enterprise a couple of hours after completing the claim form. The guy on the phone was surprised when I said that I need an automatic with hand controls, had to go talk to his manager and then said that they’d need to source one from a third party… No call back on Friday so I’ll chase them on Monday. Thanks for the tips for chasing via DLM, they’ll be my first contact on Monday.

Unfortunately it looks like Skoda don’t offer the ecosuite interior trim on the Enyaq any more, so I’d have to settle for some dull dreary black thing unless they happen to have one in stock.

Good news is that the police have charged the 88(!) year old driver, and will be contacting the DVLA with the suggestion that his license is revoked. I’ve signed a statement, as has the chap who was following the other driver down the road – the guy didn’t even brake, he just flew straight out into the crossroads as if he was on the through-road instead of the side road. May have to attend court.

Bad news is that my crutches are bent and my power wheelchair keeps switching off and gets hot. Not good. I’m going to have to chase via DLM’s legal cover, I think. I can see me ending up several thousand pounds out of pocket over this. Money I don’t have.

Keep waking up from nightmares about the impact as well.

I’m Incredibly lucky to have not suffered much worse injuries. Paramedics said that they approached the car from the front and expected me to be stretchered away if not worse.

Sorry to hear all of that but at least you’re mostly OK.

Document everything sounds like this will end up going legal. Every ache, pain, every painkiller. It can take several days for injuries to become obvious. When I was hit from behind I was fine but over the next few days I got more and more pain.

If you’ve hot receipts for everything damaged keep them safe if not get quotes on replacing

I’d never encourage anyone to lie but do ensure you keep in writing every last ache, twinge, headache, thing you can’t do, anything you miss doing.

That’s exactly what happened to me non motability car little old lady straight thru a give way t boned me.

First thing she said was I didn’t see you I was driving a bright red mondeo estate on a lovely clear day and no other traffic. When I told the guys down the local petrol station they said what’s her name so told them, he laughed shouted pi lads to the workshop guys, Oi lads Dorothea has done it again. Then said to me she crashes that car every day. Really needs to be retesting after a certain age

                      All the best
