After visiting a friend in Glasgow Royal Infirmary me and my wife happened to pass an Arnold Clark Hyundai dealership and went in for a look at the Ioniq 6. The salesman “James Macmillan” had a chat with us and told me that they were discounting the car by £250 and that a V2L charger comes free with the car, that was good enough for me lol.

My wife really likes the car but i thought it would be too low for her but she had a go getting in and out and was happy enough that she ordered one in black with grey interior.

Its getting delivered next week, gulp, and ive only a granny charger, at this point, so that could be interesting. Hopefully Motability can sort me out quickly with an EV charger.

Its an absolute bargain but of course its got to be right for you, but if your looking for an EV that has virtually everything then this could be the answer. The cars design is a bit Marmite but both me and the wife really like it.

The dealership address is:- 345 Alexander Parade, Glasgow G31 3AD

James direct line number is 0141 422 2780

The only person who got all his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.
Anything i post over three lines long please assume it is an article lol.

but there’s a lot of issues I see the Ioniq 6 has that is stopping me

Such as? That aside, if the car is not suitable, why force it?

Compared to my current Tucson the issues I have with the Ioniq 6 is laggy infotainment, outdated software, no wireless CarPlay, small boot, steering wheel doesn’t straighten itself after a turn, firm seats, no Apple Maps directions in HUD, large turning circle and the car is an awkward size which will make parking and tight car parks a pain. My main factor in wanting the 6 is that I think it looks stunning and I’ve heard it’s a comfortable drive and that motability would give me back £1800 from my Tucson AP which means I’d be getting paid to change to the 6 but I fear all of those issues would be hard to overlook.

Infotainment is indeed laggy, have used it once to set the car up and haven’t touched it since. Similar to the VW touch buttons, less of a deal than people make it out to be. Nonetheless, true.

Outdated software doesn’t mean anything, not an issue. Not having wireless AA/Carplay does sting a little coming from a car that had it, but bought the correct cable, now it’s 2 seconds extra on start up. Not a big deal.

Small boot is nonsense, the boot is huge. Yes, it’s quite obviously smaller than a Tucson, but i’m not quite sure that it’s reasonable to compare an SUV boot to that of a “luxury” saloon. It’s over 400 litres – more than a Qashqai.

No 3rd party directions in the HUD, true – but is assumed to come in a firmware update at some point. The Golf didn’t have it in the beginning either. Doesn’t matter to me much, i personally don’t use the HUD, but if it’s a dealbreaker to you, then yeah. Probably wait until after the update.

Steering wheel: i agree. It’s awkward to drive in the beginning, but i’m getting used to it now. Takes a few miles though. Electric power steering sucks.

Large turning circle is kind of to be expected. It’s a large car – the turning radius is narrower than that of a 5 series, which would be equivalent in size. Not by much, but yeah, if you’re getting a huge car (and the car is absolutely huge), then that’s really not something you can discredit the car for. It has a decent enough turning radius for what it is. Parking isn’t any worse than any other car the same size. In fact, it probably is better since you can get out and have the car park itself (if you chose to use the feature).

Can’t disagree with the looks, i do certainly think it’s a stunning car – in terms of comfortable drive, it’s getting there slowly. Ours certainly is quite firm (not settled yet).

I gotta be honest, i’m not entirely certain why you’d want to get rid of the Tucson, but this doesn’t seem to me like a great tradeoff. Bit of money in the pocket and a better looking car doesn’t outweigh, imho, having the more suitable one. Keep in mind that you can’t cancel any lease early at any time.

You’re one year out on the end of contract, i’d stick with it.

On an unrelated note: fixed me key now as well.

.. also doubles as a self defence tool now, weighing around half a ton and made from actual metal.

          edit:

Also threw this in the car.

Just a quick design, but it holds what it needs to hold, better than have the stuff rattle around in the humongous storage thing underneath. Only downside is, can’t reach that when the relaxation seats are down lol. Next on the list is a holder for the Electroverse RFID, to the sun visor.

Let me address a few, although it does sound that’s it’s not the car for you. I have had the car a few days, not really driven it much, due to other commitments. So a raw review.

no laggy entertainment here. Outdated software, well it’s already had a map update, seems fine to me. No wireless, yup annoying, but fixed with an inexpensive cable or dongle, Steering wheel doesn’t straighten, can’t say it’s a obvious problem, the steering seems to me very light, but not played with sport mode, firm seats, they are fine, seem comfortable to me, comparing to BMW sports seats, which were a bit thin, passengers think they are in Rolls Royce, spacious, silent, maybe too silent,  if any thing the seats could be more sporting looking with a leg bolster. No Apple/android Maps in HUD, yup don’t know if it’s that a bigger issue, as the map is used for pre condition at chargers. Yup the car is big and wide, but has multiple cameras and an excellent Birds Eye view, making parking a cinch, I concur, not for the nervous driver, and those 20 inch wheels can get kerbbed easily, if not looking at the side cameras. I am really happy so far, the silence is very odd, like being in a tram, maybe I missing the engine noise from the BMW, and yes it’s big, but it looks fantastic, still can’t quite believe that I get to drive around in it, can’t wait for a road trip, got my kettle and sandwich maker for using the built in plug.

              silent, maybe too silent

I’m sure you know this, but you can dial in an “engine sound”, thingie.

Under Settings, then Sound, then “Active Sound Design”, you get to choose three different noise levels. Makes spaceship noises then based on throttle.

Tried it, turned it off after 5 minutes, but maybe it floats your boat in case you didn’t look at that yet.

@C-Jor-El please don’t get an Ioniq 6, you’re already listing all the things you don’t like about it so obviously don’t love it and will only be complaining until it gets changed… seems to me you’re only thinking of changing cause can make a few quid on it 🤷‍♂️

@C-Jor-El I’m with @Rhodgie on this. You have articulated several reasons why the Ioniq 6 would be unsuitable for you, and that’s before we even get on to whether or not an EV is right for you. Getting money back on the AP is a very poor reason to justify the change and my sense is that you’d soon regret changing the car. As I often say, order in haste, repent at leisure!

You are only a year from changing, so less than that before you can order. I’d just be keeping an eye open for something more suitable that might come onto the scheme between now and then. Whilst the scheme is a shadow of its former self, there are still the odd pleasant surprises that crop up.

As for size, it depends on what you are used to. I’ve had 3 x BMW 5 Series and never found them to be particularly big and it was a very nimble car to drive (other than in snow, when it was hopeless). However, I had a 7 Series once and that was a complete pain to park due to the appallingly narrow parking spaces that we have in the U.K. (my wife was never with me in that car so I wasn’t using disabled spaces).

Rene, I did try that, I was hoping for a more star trek warp speed sound, instead I got the electric mower. Turned straight off, gotta laugh, worth a try. Cheers. It seems on the new i6 N version they have piped sounds, enjoy the silence, or I will make my own car sounds, like I.did when I was a kid.

Muscle memory, wrestling with the transmission stalk, I find it not very intuitive and not that clear whether I am drive or reverse. Due to the traffic in our road, I have been used to rapid changes, and keep try to grab the non existing gear lever in the centre. I gotta drive her more.

That’s the window buttons for me lol.

Stroked the door panel more than our cats since we got the car.

Today was/is first proper “scheduled charging” day. Reversed the car by remote in our bay (otherwise i can’t get out), worked an absolute treat, plugged it in, immediately sprung the message showing me when scheduled charging is starting – perfect.

Doesn’t show on the dash, whether in drive, reverse or neutral or even park!

Sorry I dont know, but good point, as i am down looking at the stalk! It will take some time, for some reason, still apprehensive in driving, due the size and silence, yet I spent years driving transit type vans and trucks, even buses! It doesn’t at the moment, feel like the bmw, where it somehow, becomes precise, connected and part of you. When to Lidls at the weekend and felt I was the chauffeur. We just nipped out in the alfa, and the engine burble was there. Just gotta get in it and drive, and stop the reaching for the phantom gear change.

The stalk is pretty easy, just turn it foward untill it hits the stop point and away you go. Same with reverse, all the way back till it hits the stop position and away you go backwards😂

Just twisting and not hitting the stop position will be neutral and the button on the end of the stalk, puts the car into park, although it automatically goes into park when you turn off the ignition.

You’ll get use to it mate.

You can also record your Alpha burbling away and play it through the Ioniqs speakers – better than any Whoooooo sound the car makes, though do turn off those silly warp drive noises😂

Nope, doesn’t show in the dash. But it’s pretty obvious, if the reverse camera comes on, then you’re in reverse.

It won’t feel like the BMW, ever. The reason for that is the electric power steering, which is just awful. Not just in the i6, but in general. Even Porsche struggled for a while with it before they got it somewhat right in the Taycan.

It’s not a car suited for a spirited driver. You can blast over B roads, the grip is there, but it really isn’t enticing you to do so. Just make sure it’s dry, the car isn’t necessarily tail happy, but if you stomp on it in a wet/leafy corner, the torque will overwhelm the wheels.

As to the gearstick, as Kezo said, just twist it to the stop forward, off you go. That’s pretty simple. My gripe lies more with the general position of the stalk – a gearshift needs to be reachable with the left hand imho, so i can twirl on the wheel while i shift the car in reverse. Now particularly on three point turns or adjusting for a parking bay (basically every time currently since i’m not used to the size yet), you need to come to a stop, take the hand of the wheel, grab the wiper stalk by accident, put the car in forward, start twirling the wheel, stop, take the hand of the wheel, shift in reverse, start twirling again. It’s obnoxious.

Another pet peeve i already have is the auto hold. It doesn’t apply properly if you shift too fast in reverse after coming to a stand still – you throw it in reverse and the car just rolls back – while the wheels are still pointing the wrong way because i couldn’t twirl on it due to the gear stalk.

Almost gave me a heart attack when the car started faffing off in reverse while i didn’t have my hands at the wheel. I’m sure that’s an automatism that i developed in other cars and eventually it may sort itself out, but for now, nyeh.

My espresso machine arrives tomorrow, may have overdone it a bit lol.. Not quite sure where to put that monstrosity in the car.

Before you shift, you have to come to a stop and put your foot on the brake before it will go forwards or backwards, so in theory there is a split second of your right hand away from the wheel, however it’s not only Hyundai, Skoda do it with Kodiaq, not sure with the Enyak, but VW i.d’s have to the right, even Mercedes have put theirs on the right for quite a while. I wouldn’t be suprised, if it because we drive on the wrong side of the road and manufacturers are too damn lazy to switch them.

Autohold – try pressing the brake pedal a little harder at stop or it won;t activate, better still ditch autohold and just control with footbrake.

                                    Doesn’t excuse it though.

A gearstick belongs on the centre console. Enyaq, like Explorer etc are ID based models, so they use the same stupid gear lever. Didn’t like it in those either.

It’s the same as the idiotic digital mirrors – fixing a problem that didn’t exist. Throw the window switches where they belong, on the door, put the gear selector on the centre console, where it belongs. Stop being french for no reason. If i want quirky controls that don’t make sense, i’ll get an old Citroen.

Worked for almost 100 years, i don’t see why that requires changing now – it doesn’t offer anything, just makes handling the car awkward.

I probably will stop using auto hold, since there’s no foot rest for the right leg anyway. In the Golf, you stop and put your feet left and right on the rests, was comfy that way. Not possible in the Ioniq sadly.

That all said: most of it is me being annoyed having to re-learn/get rid of automatisms. I’ll get used to it eventually.

In case it’s not quite obvious, there’s a foot rest on the left. Not the right. Can’t rest the foot comfortably on the right, off the throttle.

Good advice on here, yes, you can see the gear selection on the dash, it was hidden by the steering wheel. Anyway its only forward and back. Lol. I will stop looking at the stalk.

It’s going to be an absolute marathon to wash, might take 4 days.

Put the little divider in. It separates the deeper one, and has a hole for usb.

Dreading the first one already, lol.

Still waiting for the Fusso to arrive, once that’s here and i get a break in the weather, off we go. The tray looks good/practical, might look into that.

Washed yesterday, using autoglym ceramic wash and protect, (it wasn’t dirty), if it was, i would have used UHD wash first. Then used the autoglym polar seal in the foam gun. Then wiped down using a microfiber towel, dampened with rapid ceramic spray, as a drying aid. With so many nooks and crannies around the car,  I did think of breaking out the mini leaf blower, to stop drips, but it started to rain. I am trying out the ceramic spray stuff, as i am finding hand waxing a little tough these days. I have too much stuff, and keeping the old Alfa, in good nick is a priority. Come spring i may put on a bit of wax/sealant. I have so many bits and bobs, left over from a previous life, and a Halfords trade card. Love to try the fusso, and BH double speed wax but gotta use up what I have.  I believe the paint is water paint, so more prone to stone nicks.

                                                  No, you are.

                                                  Yup!

However, try putting your your foot to the side of the lower haf of the pedal and empt space – it should rest there quite happily. I find doing his in the Tucson, can also control the go pedal, with a little more pressure required.

Rene, you were right about the foot rest, just tried one pedal driving in heavy traffic, and that would have been ideal, instead of hovering the foot. Going to start driving now. Just navigated two tiny car parks, and cameras were a blessing.

It’s not so bad, with the spray sealants, the little Alfa is a nightmare, of nooks crannies, then wax on wax off. I do it in sections. It’s too much, for me now, especially as we have full sun on the drive until 4pm. Lol.
