After visiting a friend in Glasgow Royal Infirmary me and my wife happened to pass an Arnold Clark Hyundai dealership and went in for a look at the Ioniq 6. The salesman “James Macmillan” had a chat with us and told me that they were discounting the car by £250 and that a V2L charger comes free with the car, that was good enough for me lol.

My wife really likes the car but i thought it would be too low for her but she had a go getting in and out and was happy enough that she ordered one in black with grey interior.

Its getting delivered next week, gulp, and ive only a granny charger, at this point, so that could be interesting. Hopefully Motability can sort me out quickly with an EV charger.

Its an absolute bargain but of course its got to be right for you, but if your looking for an EV that has virtually everything then this could be the answer. The cars design is a bit Marmite but both me and the wife really like it.

The dealership address is:- 345 Alexander Parade, Glasgow G31 3AD

James direct line number is 0141 422 2780

The only person who got all his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.
Anything i post over three lines long please assume it is an article lol.

Hard to beat that deal lol – we did see the Ancaster offer, but were offered a car within a week at “our” dealership.. And i’m impatient lol.

And not forgetting the free charger and fitting, thats got to be £800-£1k. The fitter was super, we were really concerned over the electrics and the possible run for the cable, due to the awkward siting of the ancient fuse box. The guy gave us a few options, so we had an additional circuit breaker fitted, tight to the wall under a bookshelf, he then run the cabling up and over at ceiling hight, concealed in conduit. The room is basically an office/spare, so with a bit of redecorating, you wouldnt see it, then out, then down the outside wall, and fitted the omhe pro discreetly. Really well done, nice polite young guy, (a contractor) from Plug In.

Got to agree with Rene, the handling is a bit of shock, coming from the BMW, I need to alter my mindset on the chuckability, and enjoy and embrace the uniqueness of the car, otherwise I would of gone for a Mini. No squeaky brakes here,  the suspension seems ok but the BMW was a very firm ride. Only using regen 1 at the moment, so quiet fluid no seasickness reported. Limousine style space at the back. Unfortunately got caught up in refurbishment, so only a trip to the garden centre for lunch. The car doesn’t shrink in tight spaces, so still a little cautious, in our crowded South London back roads. Just got to set up the wireless carply dongle, tune the sound system, and adjust the interior lighting. Then a years learning on all the other functions.

Niggly bits so far, the rear view camera is useless in rain (gets covered, view completely obstructed, might be able to help with RainX), the turning circle is pretty awful (although, can be partially excused by the fact that it’s equal to a medium sized aircraft carrier in size), the brakes are squeaky af (might settle), and the suspension is stiff/firm in an unsophisticated way – but that might settle a bit as well (it rides harsher than the GTE, which had the sports suspension). It’s okay at higher speeds, at low speeds it’s pretty awful currently. The infotainment is slow and laggy – not that big an issue since i don’t really interact with it much, but still worth pointing out.

Rain X or better, does the trick

Press and hold “Auto Hold” for a few seconds activates brake cleaning. Remember you are in regen braking mostly and the disks go unused and start to squeak.

It’s an heavy HGV and tyres need a few thousand miles on.

I remember going from the Tucson ICE to PHEV and test driving an i5 and Seal, they progressively got more difficult to turn, due to the weight – physics lol. You will get use to it 🙂

Just came back from a more.. ambitious B Road drive. It works. It’s not as precise as a hot hatch or equivalent “sporty” rig, but it does tickle a little bit when you drive it spirited.

No squeaky brakes here, the suspension seems ok but the BMW was a very firm ride. Only using regen 1 at the moment, so quiet fluid no seasickness reported.

Car has done 120 miles now, with mostly regen-braking. As mentioned, pretty sure they’ll set eventually, i’m just not using them a lot. Currently faffing with i-Pedal, haven’t made my mind up whether or not i want to drive with NO regen (coasting in this car is insane, it just doesn’t slow down), or i-Pedal.

I did read about motion sickness, not quite sure where that comes from – maybe we’re used to it through the PHEV prior, but absolutely zero physical impact reported by the lady of the house.

The car doesn’t shrink in tight spaces, so still a little cautious, in our crowded South London back roads. Just got to set up the wireless carply dongle, tune the sound system, and adjust the interior lighting. Then a years learning on all the other functions.

It very doesn’t shrink, currently still quite apprehensive and overly cautious with the bulk of it (sadly, Brydo learned the harsh way). We live in a small village, so everything is tight around here, and tractors coming towards us aplenty.

With the wireless dongle, do be careful: the USB A port is permanently powered. We decided against a wireless dongle because you need to unplug it when you leave the car – or wire a switch in between. Seen quite a few tutorials on that, in various Ioniq6 FB groups and subreddits. With the looming threat of an ICCU issue, we decided against using a wireless dongle – instead got a 10cm 90 degree cable, fits perfectly and looks tidy. This one.

edit: doesn’t show up, it’s called “USB C Cable 10cm short cable,MYLB Nylon Braided Right Angle 90 Degree USB C 5V/ 5A Super fast Charging and Data Sync Cable (0.1m / 4 inch, Black)” sold by MYLB. Both ends 90 degree connectors.

Works a treat (S24), and i’m not too fussed about plugging it in. Of course proper wireless would be nicer, but alas, this works fine and also reduces heat (google maps navigation + wireless charging led to overheating S24 in the Golf).

Wired dash cam as well (12V, not hardwired), was much less painful than we feared. Cable routed nicely (though i did have to print a small cable reel for excess, stuck under the floating console), all out of view now apart from where it exits the headliner to the camera.

Currently in CAD to “design” a quick storage for our vape batteries, to be thrown in the cupholder – there sadly isn’t any convenient space for it where it doesn’t rattle. Nothing fancy, just this.

As for features.. Try the Auto-parking next. Hold the camera button until it turns on, rest comes through on-screen instructions. Definitely try the “get out of the car and have it park itself while you wait outside” option, at least once. Good party piece to show off to a mate, lol.

Yeah i know, but i didn’t know how to activate the brake cleaning, cheers for that. Will do that a few times next drive – i do use a lot of regen braking due to not being 100% confident with the car, so i verge to the careful side of driving (slow, basically).

It don’t need a few thousand miles though, the tyres are settled after 150ish miles. It’s not 1985 anymore 😉 😀

Activate brake cleaning, it stays on untill you turn it off or turn ign off.

Don’t forget EV tyres are made with a much harder composition and wear 30% slower, than standard non EV tyres – In 1985, I was working at Michelin Stoke, as an electro-mechanical engineer and got free trial tyres, not as it’s useful information😂

Pirelli actually makes no reference to break in period, they’re good to go from the start. I do think it’s going to improve a bit once the tread wears down a little bit (feels a little like it’s pushing laterally on the tread), but yeah.. They feel settled otherwise.

My only concern is, Kwik Fit. I don’t want them to throw some random ass tyre on there – i don’t think Pirelli P-Zero E are a tyre they’d stock a lot of.

I always call the mobile unit and tell them what tyre I want. Never had a problem with the mobile fitters.

Not much info around on the tyres yet, but they are a type of run flat and contain 55% sustainable materials, containing bio polymers & resins and rice husk silica.

I’ve had no problems with squeaking brakes so far. I’m still getting used to the size of the car, as the front slopes away it’s sometimes difficult to judge exactly how far you are from obstruction s. Tge camera is first class though and a Quick Look and you know exactly how much room you have.

The seats are pretty good but not quite as good as our xc40.

Still getting used a few things but loving the car. Everyone I’ve shown it to think it’s excellent so I’m ready happy with our choice.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this but it’s a babe magnet, well when I say babe she was the right side of 70 but I’m taking it as a win 😂

                          Beggars can’t be choosers. 😀

Seats are.. firm, i think. I had to fiddle a little bit to get comfy (pressure on my gluteus maximus), but lowest setting in the rear and highest in the front took that off, i think it’s comfy now.

I do know that the seat in the 10k mile car was softer, so the seat will eventually mould, i think.

Squeaking brakes are normal on an EV, you have them too (or had, depending on how long you drove now). If you’d get out right now, and use the remote control to drive your car forward/backwards, you’ll hear what i mean.

I’m not talking about a slight disc-rub while driving (which we do also have, but that’s going to go away, i know that), i’m talking about the noises it makes when it applies brakes itself at very slow speeds.

Hi, does this car have “matrix” headlights? What does it mean, i just set lights to auto, does it mean the main beam comes on in dark areas then dims if it detects oncoming traffic, or do I have to flick stalk to main beam, like normal. The sales lady, did explain it, but it was a bit rushed and confusing. Cheers.

Intelligent Front-lighting System (IFS) with Matrix Beam LED headlights.

Lights on auto, flick the stalk, you should see auto come up in the drivers display where the green headlight sybmol is

Headlights to “Auto” means it automatically turns on the dipped beams when it gets dark.

To activate the Matrix LEDs (and/or Auto High Beam), as you correctly identified, you push the stalk away from you. Gives you an Auto High Beam icon in the display, and yeah, it’s permanently on, just selectively turns off parts of the beams where it detects a car.

You can set in the infotainment at which speed you’d like the high beam to come on, i think as standard it’s set to 27mph or something, you can go lower.

Tried playing with the interior V2L port, but apparently i’m too stupid to unlock it. The key doesn’t seem to fit? Didn’t think that i need some kind of certification or something to understand how to put a key into a hole, but either i don’t have that particular knowledge or the “smart key” doesn’t fit in the lock.

Do you all find it easy to get in and out of? I have slightly bad knees and chronic back pain and worry it’ll be a pain to get in and out of and when I did a test drive the firm seat wasn’t as comfortable as my Tucson but I’m not sure if that was just because I didn’t adjust the seat correctly.

The seats are definitely less comfy than other cars i’ve driven, including the buckets in the Golf GTE.

There’s two silver linings: our test drive car had 10k miles, that seat was noticeably better than the ones in our new car – and in our new one, once adjusted, i did find a comfy position. On Saturday i do have my first “big” trip with the car (well, 200 miles), that will show how the seats really are.

As to entry, it has easy entry seats (they slide back to let you out, and forward once you start the car), i find it a lot easier to get in and out of the than the GTE – but probably not as easy to get in and out of as in the Tucson. I don’t think anyone but yourself could answer that.

Leaving aside the merits of the Ioniq, if you have chronic back pain and dodgy knees I would have thought you’d be daft to move away from an SUV, especially as you need to think ahead as to what you might be like over the next 3 years. If you do an early termination on the Tucson, get a lower car, and then have to do another early termination, you might find yourself in difficulty.

If you want to find out for sure, we had no problem getting 24 hour test drives at our local Hyundai dealership (in fact I had two of them in different cars). That would give you plenty of time to do a long journey, multiple short ones, get in and out of the car lots of times and play around with the seating position.

Out of interest, how long have you had your Tucson? We have a Tucson Ultimate and I found the seats to be uncomfortable at first (the upper backrest seemed to press into my shoulder blades) but, after a lot of tweaking of the electric seats, I have managed to get comfortable in them and now don’t have an issue, even on long journeys. That being said, I don’t think that seats are Hyundai’s strong point. Before getting our Tucson I used to go out regularly in my mates Santa Fe. He had 3 of them in a row and I found every one of them to be ruddy uncomfortable as a passenger!

It’s only a good deal if the car is suitable for you. Otherwise it could be a very bad move! Unfortunately, too many people don’t research cars properly and early terminations add to the scheme costs for everyone, hence why Motability take a dim view if people do several of them.

That aside, if the car is not suitable, why force it?
