After visiting a friend in Glasgow Royal Infirmary me and my wife happened to pass an Arnold Clark Hyundai dealership and went in for a look at the Ioniq 6. The salesman “James Macmillan” had a chat with us and told me that they were discounting the car by £250 and that a V2L charger comes free with the car, that was good enough for me lol.

My wife really likes the car but i thought it would be too low for her but she had a go getting in and out and was happy enough that she ordered one in black with grey interior.

Its getting delivered next week, gulp, and ive only a granny charger, at this point, so that could be interesting. Hopefully Motability can sort me out quickly with an EV charger.

Its an absolute bargain but of course its got to be right for you, but if your looking for an EV that has virtually everything then this could be the answer. The cars design is a bit Marmite but both me and the wife really like it.

The dealership address is:- 345 Alexander Parade, Glasgow G31 3AD

James direct line number is 0141 422 2780

@Rhodgie I’m still getting used to all the tech so hopefully get onto it when I’m back from holiday.

Well, just did our test drive proper. Sadly, we had a AWD model – well i say sadly, sad because it doesn’t really give an impression as to how the RWD one drives, objectively speaking it was a lot of fun leaving everyone in the dust every time you put the hammer down.

That said, this car also had the idiotic electric mirrors. Talk about “fixing” a problem that never existed.

Other than that.. We like it a lot, in terms of driving, that’s a bit two edged. It feels decent to drive, and is “chuckable” enough, but i never felt like i was actually in control, more like the car “let me drive it”. I can only do things if the car lets me, like adjusting regen settings for example – car just flat out told me that it can’t, right now. Thanks, i guess.

That being said, particularly with the roof open, it is a good looking car. It does grow on  you, on pictures it usually looks very.. marmite, but in person, yeah.

          Anyway, that’s on the drive.

Not our colour (nor interior), but with a bright interior and the car in either white or Matrix Gold Matte or whatever they call it, yeah. Can certainly work with that. In terms of manoeuvrability, it’s a big car. People underestimate it from pictures (much like the Ioniq 5 that looks like a Golf but is in reality closer to an X3), so did we. I did take it through a few car parks just to see how it copes, and it’s good enough for the most part.

So.. If the car’s still the same price on the scheme next quarter, then we’re in trouble. Between this and the Explorer (assuming it stays the same price, too), .. gonna be a few nights of sleeping over it lol.

PS: ventilated seats are weird as hell. Nice, but the first time you feel it, it feels like either your butt is going numb or you get the sensation that you’ve sweated through your clothing and experience convection cooling now.

@Rene the wing mirror thingy is an absolute nonsense but it’s an added extra at about £1,000 so no chance of getting by accident.

I wasn’t sure what you meant by “i never felt like i was actually in control, more like the car “let me drive it”.

Another thing that impressed me was the satnav. My XC40 satnav was always a bit too late with instructions. I lost track of the number of times I was in the wrong lane when approaching a round about but with this one it was always well in advance. That leads me onto the heads up display HUD, absolutely brilliant, I’ve never had it in a car before but what a great addition.

Yeah, but that’s only recently – with the Ioniq 5, they’re bundled in the max tech pack (and they were in the “Zen pack” in this model, a spec that don’t exist anymore).

It’s hard to explain what i mean by not feeling like i’m in control. It felt disconnected. Genuinely having trouble explaining what i mean. It’s more like asking the car to do something, as opposed to telling it. Does that make sense?

A few things i didn’t like, most of which are fixable with a little extra investment:

The key. Boy, why they thought that thing is a great idea in an “executive” car is beyond me – the demonstrator yesterday had 10k miles, the key was mankier (scratched etc) than a 90s tamagotchi in a 4 year olds hands – and made from worse/cheaper plastic, too. Fixed with a cover, i suppose.

Reflection: already looked for dash covers, the bezel reflects distractingly (imo) in the windscreen. Fixed with a dash mat/cover (hyundai officially makes one, just not on sale here). Lots of complaints online about that too.

Android Auto. We thought something was broken yesterday, didn’t even occur to us that the car has a wireless charger but no wireless AA/Carplay. Fixed with a dongle, still slightly disappointing.

We didn’t try the sat nav, we tend to just use google maps – we just drove it from the dealership home.

I will say, i expected more bings and bongs – turning off lane holding assist (very easy) and speed assist thing (less easy, still not too inconvenient) seems to have removed all bongs from the car. Didn’t have anything beeping at me.

The gear selector is.. there. I don’t like rotating gear selectors (not in the ID stuff/Explorer, nor here), but i’ll live.

We also couldn’t get the remote parking to work, i assume the “start button” on the key (the one labelled “hold”) was broken. Wouldn’t surprise me with that cheap and nasty piece of.. work.

Plenty of stuff we couldn’t or just didn’t play with, for example i’d have liked to try a dark theme for the screens, i’m sure it has one. We also didn’t try the relaxation seats, mainly because we didn’t even know it has that feature. In general, we didn’t play much with the infotainment, since the car was the managers daily for 10k miles now, so we didn’t want to screw with his settings.

That all said: we actually fell in love. It drives great, it’s going to be a proper good longer distance rig (long wheelbase), it’s comfy while not being wallowy (it actually isn’t far off the GTE in “firmness”).

We’ll have the bright interior, with a white exterior. We’re already set, if the car is available as is on 9th of Nov, we order it on the first day we can. We’re a bit concerned by the fact that the facelifted model is supposed to come out this year still – with, i assume, a hefty increase in AP (if it even is available), or the Ioniq 5 type skew with 4 different packs (Zen, Tech, Tech Max and whatnot).

HUD.. We have one currently, i don’t care for it personally. I still look at the dash for my routing/speedo, it’s something i can’t get out of. After almost three years, i still don’t look at it.

Rene, I have bought a tpu key cover, from Ali, as well as a android wireless adapter. You can also get an adapter to run a full android box, so watching netflix and you tube is possible. (not while driving). I also bought a small divider for the armrest cubby hole. Cheap on ali.

Love the white, it has a super contrast with the black accents and spoiler, and is pearlized, so really is a stand out colour. Would have gone for it myself, but I have a white bmw, so needed a change. Thanks for your findings. Pick mine up the around the 25th. Just hope its not too big for central london!!

Yeah already had a look around, there’s a few nice enough key covers (even on Amazon, but those are just Ali resellers anyway), the same for the AA adapter (we’ll be going with AAwireless, http://www.aawireless.io/en). Full android box is too much, just need google maps and spotify to work through AA – the car limits volume output at 75% when using bluetooth, for some reason. Some slightly quieter mixed songs were not “loud enough” for my taste.

Dividers for cubbies etc i’ll print myself, same with an adapter for the cupholders that.. i guess, are there. It doesn’t hold small coke bottles, they flop around – i find that distracting. But that’s easily fixable, i’ll just print a sleeve, few springs that i still have lying around from other projects – in fact, i do like that i can “modify” the car to make it better, in that sense. I’ll offer the files for free here once i sketched them, for others to print as well, where possible. Can’t do anything just yet without being able to measure everything.

The dash cover probably will be of the suede flavour ($75 from the US, company called Covercraft, https://www.covercraft.com/product/suedemat-custom-dash-cover/DMS). Need to read into that a bit more – i may just print a small clip-on sleeve for the bezel, in black. Might fix the biggest issue (the silver bezel reflecting brightly in the windscreen, at least on a very sunny day) already.

We didn’t even notice that it was a pearl white – they had a white one on the lot, but that was a bit of a.. garden ornament, i was told, after calling it a barnfind.

As you can tell.. hard to tell what sort of paintjob that is, other than “treesap-white”. The car also has a blackberry bush sitting on the bonnet.

Brand new car btw, Ultimate RWD, less than 15 miles on the clock, still everything wrapped inside and out, no PDI/PDP done. Even has the door foam bumpers still.

But, from pictures, the only two colours for us would’ve been white, as well as Gravity Gold Matte (which looks rather silvery for gold, but alas). I think that’s a nifty colour too, but white with white interior.. Always wanted a car like that, here’s my opportunity to see if i actually would enjoy it (or get peeved off with cleaning every week).

I will say, if you’re anything like us, you’ll love it. It just offers so much for comparatively little money, and actually has some road presence. And it looks cool with the roof open.

And, the thing we were most giddy about, stupidly enough, is the fact that on the rear bench, at the bottom, there’s an actual plug point. Which means, proper cooling box, cool drinks and sammies for picnic weee! 😀

Yup, great colour choice, white on white, was so tempted, but where we live in a congested busy road, my white bmw is permently covered in road grime and dust. I have ceramic coated it, and wash with a ceramic shampoo. But whithin a day its covered in dust, although the pearl would still sparkle, against flat white. The grey has a pearl finish/texture too, so hoping to get a pop on that. Shocking treatment of that poor ionic 6.

The key fob is a fecked up  tamagotchi of the 90’s, but turn it 90 degree’s it’s H for Hyundai 😂 Any how a a leather or silicone cover from Aliexpress sorts it for a couple of quid, but doesn’t excuse Hyundai shitness!

Turn off speed limit assist bing bong boo – press volume mute on steering wheel for 3s or voice control “turn off speed limit” sorts it.

Wireless AA/CP is present on Tucson, is it not on the Ioniqs?

                        Reflection from bezel round screens?

The arse & balls cooler, is brilliant imo opinion, especially on long journers in hot weather such as today – something I missed coming home just now in the 2 series after visiting family. As for how Hyundai drive, they are mostly family orientated rather than sporty, but I don’t drive the Tucson any different and not left the road coming up over the Brecon’s yet😂 Like most cars you get use to them.

The new Ionoqic 6 looks nice and how the current on should have been, but expect AP’s to go sharply north!

                              Nope. 🙁

I mean, not that big a deal, the worst offender to me is that key. I just don’t understand how someone nodded that off as “good enough” for a £55k car dabbing into/cosplaying as an executive saloon.

                              Reflection from bezel round screens?

No, the bezel of the “binnacle”. Here’s someone else with the issue, makes it easier.

That silver bezel around the screens is very noticeable in the windscreen. Or was to me, at least.

@ DougieB it won’t be everyone’s choice but if you like it it’s one hell of a car and the AP is ridiculously cheap and that’s before some fantastic discounts that are on offer. Add to that there are many in stock so a week or so delivery is common.

I would take the wife for a test drive in one and see how she feels. The Ultimate has every bit of tech you need and my wife loves the interior, we have the light grey option which makes it feel even bigger than it already is. My grandkids think it’s fantastic with my grandson, in particular, loving it.

I hear you, and as a WPMS leaser, the AP for the ultimate is only £387 which is crazy. However, I’ve never been convinced by the looks anyway (the back end isn’t exactly pretty), and if her indoors dislikes it, it’s a non-starter.

Rene, my test drive was on the hottest day, last week. Very bright sunshine, I didn’t notice the reflections, I was looking at/through the HUD. Sitting in the MB CLA. The screens are a lot smaller, and seemed tighter to the dash. I guess its one of things, that can annoy you if you are sensitive to it. Have seen comments where folks black out the surrounds, with sharpies or wrap. I see how it goes.

Have seen comments where folks black out the surrounds, with sharpies or wrap. I see how it goes.

A dash cover will likely fix it and doesn’t cost the world, i’m willing to spend a little money to improve my experiences, that’d be the easiest solution.

Maybe i’ll just vinyl wrap it, got the cutter for it here.

Or, maybe it’s completely fine and it just bothered me because i noticed immediately (and subsequently constantly stared at it), might be entirely fine on days that aren’t as bright.

As said, it’s fixable, wouldn’t be a reason not to go for the car at all – was just adding what i noticed in terms of negatives.

Wireless AA/CP is present on Tucson, is it not on the Ioniqs?

Nope. 🙁 I mean, not that big a deal, the worst offender to me is that key.

The key is an easy solution, in the grand scheme of things, plus you could always spec digital key and put the real key up the salesmans arse😂 However, in the real world my key stays in my pocket tbh and wired AA is neither or there imo.

As for the reflection, I can’t see the silver bezel, rather the whole dash reflection, which is mad for sunny wales lol. Infact, it’s made me think and I’m going to pay more attention and check mine tomorrow – could it be because of the double glazing thats causing it? @Brydo have you noticed it?

The digital key doesn’t allow for driving the car remotely, which we need for charging (or i’d need to purchase a 10m charging cable which i don’t want to), needs to go in and out of our parking spot remotely because otherwise i can’t get out (too close to wall). Unlike now, the Golf has the charging port on the front left.

I just thought it was laughable, and the key of the demonstrator we drove genuinely looked like it needed replacing urgently after 10k miles, including broken remote start button.

My main issue with wireless AA (or lack thereof) is that it shows that whoever designed the thing did not think. The car has a wireless charger. The vast majority will not use that charger because the phone charges through the cable they need to use to connect AA/Carplay.

Now i need to use the only conveniently placed USB port in the front for either the dongle or the phone, rather than being able to route the dash cam conveniently/cleanly (i don’t hardwire). It’s just asinine.

As for the reflection, no idea. It could well be the double glazing – i wonder if a 10% tint would fix that issue a bit.

Just had a call from Hyundai (Hutchings Bridgend), i’ll be driving the barnfind tomorrow lol, in full wrap and with door bumpers still.

The one i drove was boatloads of fun, but it also was the 3xx hp one. The barnfind is the only RWD one they have available, so i am only allowed to run it up and down the road to see how it feels (because it has 11 miles on the clock, brand new car).

Can’t fault them, they’re digging it out four rows deep for me to see if i can hoon sufficiently with it lol.

Now the price just gotta stay like it is for 83 more days.

Why is hard wiring asinine? The kits shouldn’t really even be called hard wiring anymore imho that’s when you go balls deep into doing to properly with soldering cutting and drilling which would be foolish. These hard wire kits you just pull a relevant fuse, fit a fuse holder and refit the fuse acting as a tap takes seconds and you don’t lose a USB socket or cig socket if you have one the Enyaq doesn’t for example well except in the boot.

The £20 hard wire kit is really good and can be reversed in minutes too plus you can route the cable behind the dash more easily than a cable you need to plug in.

Not sure how you got “hardwiring is asinine” from my sentence. It’s an entire rant about how stupid it is to fit a wireless charger when wireless car-apps are not an option, with a statement at the end that i don’t hardwire – underscoring the fact that i NEED a free USB port to wire my cam.

Hardwiring isn’t asinine, it’s prohibited by Motability. Explicitly. Otherwise i probably would do it too – although that still wouldn’t make the decision to fit a wireless charger when forcing people to use the wire for AA/Carplay less asinine. 😉
