After visiting a friend in Glasgow Royal Infirmary me and my wife happened to pass an Arnold Clark Hyundai dealership and went in for a look at the Ioniq 6. The salesman “James Macmillan” had a chat with us and told me that they were discounting the car by £250 and that a V2L charger comes free with the car, that was good enough for me lol.
My wife really likes the car but i thought it would be too low for her but she had a go getting in and out and was happy enough that she ordered one in black with grey interior.
Its getting delivered next week, gulp, and ive only a granny charger, at this point, so that could be interesting. Hopefully Motability can sort me out quickly with an EV charger.
Its an absolute bargain but of course its got to be right for you, but if your looking for an EV that has virtually everything then this could be the answer. The cars design is a bit Marmite but both me and the wife really like it.
The dealership address is:- 345 Alexander Parade, Glasgow G31 3AD
James direct line number is 0141 422 2780

Wobble time again, the other half, has just shown me an email, from OVO, dated 15 july, our supplier, saying the anytime cheap tariff will not work with an omhe charger, the hyundai, is on a beta list, so it may or may not work. Is this a dead end as suggestions seem to be, either ditch the car or go to octopus, or get a another charger, ie hypervolt. The other half wants to say with ovo, as its fixed. Do we have a choice of chargers from MB. Ps this maybe a double post.
Stay with OVO and try the Beta @Tillyman I think it was was a Beta tester with his Kona… and there’s the OVO forum thats pretty good.
Even on a 24p fixed rate, your still saving a 1/3 compared to running a similar sized hybrid @12ppm
I find Octopussy dear compared to others, especially if you don’t shift energy use, because the day rate is based on the SVR and goes up or down every 3 months, compared to other EV tariffs with a couple of pence dearer fixed day rate.
Easee one is a superbly built charger, better than Ohme, but not Anytime compatable. Zappi or Hypervolt are + more expensive options!
July 29, 2025 at 12:27 pm #310600Yes – I have stayed with OVO – but charge through the Ohme app – I have just been over to check my Elroq which I pick up later this afternoon – I expect to be able to change my car in the Ohme app ie from Kona to Elroq.
I will let you know if there are any issues – I will probably still use the Škoda app for pre conditioning etc but Ohme for charging.
Similar to Kona where I used bluelink for pre conditioning.July 29, 2025 at 12:28 pm #310601Cheers. Will give it a go. Worst case I will buy a hypervolt. Mrs won’t change supplier, and is anti ev, anyway. We were about to push the button on a cla coupe, but I went for the 6 as they owed us a £1. When the math was done.

Can’t let that stand like that.
I just compared our tariff to the cheapest tariff OVO offered us (rolling contract) – and it would be more expensive for us. I’ll get to fixed tariffs in a second.
Just the unit rates: 26.32p for OVO, 29.19 for Octopus. So at peak price, 2.87p dearer.
Here’s the funky part. At night, we’re using 0.3-0.4kwh per hour. With nothing running, other than whatever runs generally anyway (door light, ceiling fan, freezers, standby electronics, charging phones/watches, sometimes AC etc). That’s our consumption from yesterday (we didn’t charge nor do laundry).
That means, over the 6 reduced price hours, without our doing, we consume around 2.5kwh. Lets, for arguments sake, say 2kwh.
That’s 52.64 with OVO, 14p with Octopus. That’s 38.64p difference. So in “peak time”, with Octopus, i’d need to use 13.5kwh from 5:30 to 11:30, just to break even. Everything below that is cheaper. That’s completely without shifting any habits or anything, the difference just gets more severe. Also not included is the higher standing charge with OVO, which amounts to a free kwh every two days.
All fixed tariffs would be even more expensive, and potentially would stay so even in winter, assuming price forecasts (falling prices) are true. Unless of course another war starts, but that’s another story.
I’m not saying that OVO is expensive, they’re actually what i’d consider reasonable, but if you consider Octopus (not Octopussy) to be “dear”, then OVO is dearer. Yes, the day rate with Octopus might go up by a couple of pence, but if you look at the rate for a fixed OVO tariff, it still is beaten (especially with an almost 60p standing charge for a fixed 24.97p/kwh). Even compared to the rolling tariff it’s not great, considering that you pay 13p standing charge extra, to save 1.35p per kwh.
I also hate misleading advertising, the name “Charge Anytime” rubs me wrong, but that’s just a footnote.
I think that both tariffs are fine, but Octopus has a much higher potential to be cheap. Also, compatibility with EVs/Chargers is better – and of course, you forgot something: you get 8% off of basically any public charger (except Tesla, but including Ionity/Gridserve).
Sorry, had to get that off the chest. It’s moot anyway since LordMucs Boss doesn’t want to change supplier and for some reason is “anti-EV” in the first place, but alas.

I’m on Octopus Go – What I don’t like is that the peak rate will likely go up following this quarter and come back down, as we get back towards summer however, how long is a piece of string simply because we dont know.

August 7, 2025 at 11:15 am #310886The DNO arrived yesterday and replaced my existing 80 Amp fuse with a new plastic 80Amp fuse. I thought I had a 100A fuse but no 80 Amps it is. I asked if he could upgrade it to a 100 Amp but he said he couldn’t without confirmation from the office. I was on for half an hour to his office with no reply. I’ve left a message with them so will see what they come back with.

Did you have 80A fuse prior or was it 60A? and the DNO came to check, with the intention of fitting a new fuse carrier with a pre installed upgraded 80A fuse.
Distribution Network Operator – Cut-out Types & Ratings Guidance:
Black Plastic Cut-Out (Circa 1960s to 1990s)
If presented with this type of cut-out the LCT device installer must assume
that the fuse size in the cut-out is 60A. If the installation designer’s
calculations confirms that the customer’s installation total load will not
exceed 60A at any time then there is no need for a DNO assessment and
the install can proceed and an appropriate notification sent to the DNO.Page 2:2 here
August 7, 2025 at 8:39 pm #310918The electrician said it was a straight swap 80A for 80A but the replacement was plastic and the existing was probably original from when the house was built.
I called the DNO again today and the agent I spoke to said 80 Amp is sufficient for what I have in the house.

Oh don’t get me wrong, i very much am a petrol head, plenty of dream cars that aren’t battery powered – but i try to be objective.
Anyone who has ever seen an EV do a burnout will agree that some things can’t be replaced with an electric motor, i (very much) do understand that. If i could make the Explorer sound like a straight six, even paying out of pocket, i certainly would lol.

Man, i wish i had your electric bill. Octopus website currently not working, so i can’t post mine, but i think it’s comfortably double.
I’ll be honest, and i’d assume some others disagree, but seeing your consumption – it doesn’t really matter where you go. You might save £3, or pay £3 more somewhere else, but it’s £3.
Same with petrol, i cringe everytime i hear someone say “i drove 15 miles extra to the station where petrol was 2 pence cheaper” – yeah great, at 30 miles, you very likely burned the savings anyway (i think i calculated that with the old Ateca, a drive to Bridgend and back – around 25ish miles – would’ve cost us somewhere around £2.50-£3) – not including time spent.
Same here.. I can’t check our Octo Dashboard right now (not working) – but i bet that at most, we save like £4 out of a £150 bill. Not worth the time and hassle, for me personally.
If we’re talking double digit percentages, then absolutely – but for a 2% saving on a £100+ bill (if even that, considering we don’t know where prices go).. There’s objectively other construction sites in our household that i can save much more money on, with much less hassle lol. I’ll just do it now in a minute.

When I initially looked at changing(EDF I think) the peak rate was fixed at 24p, with a similar offpeak rate, which would save around £6 a month however, the deciding factor or rather I was out numbered, was the Octoplus points with pink goodies, which happens to be my daughters favourite colour and my mrs has got the knack of getting 800 points every time she spins the wheel😕
However, what you say makes alot of common sense, especially for petrol.

May 2025 recall notice for the ICCU
Campaign code: 40D240. NE, CE Improved control logic for battery control system
Campaign code: 40D236. NE CE ICCU update and if necessary ICCU and fuse (3. Software)

I’ll be honest with you, i think a big part of the reason as to why we’re looking into the Explorer is because it had an Octopus plush on the roof, and my wife needs one. Apparently.
As good a reason as any, i guess.

Though i will say you found the two worst angles to take a pictures of it. 😉 😀
If it’s still the same price Q4, we’ll give that a whirl before we take the 48h Explorer test drive, maybe the lady could get used to the height.
Main thing is, enjoy it mate.
