Hi, has anyone been given a grant to fund the AP of a specific car. I was unsure of whether it is usually given to those on low income who otherwise can’t afford the AP of said car or if it’s mainly given to fund adaptations.

I think it depends on the case manager you get.

You can say what the car needs to have as standard, so some base models may not have certain things e.g. lumbar support, heated seats etc so if you were looking at the next level of base model that you could say it’s because of those things etc.

But usually they give you a list of cars, I been going through grant process from September. Finally got granted an AP for a small SUV as original caseworker only granted me for a large SUV.

My new caseworker was happy keeping the same grant amount i was awarded for a small suv.

It’s means tested and I believe they do fund adaptions also

As Laura says, you can state what features you need in a car (eg electric handbrake, heated seats) and they give you a list of cars based on what you have said.

I require adaptations though (remote control steering aid and left foot accelerator) and despite providing an mobility assessment centre report stating that I required these, I was only given funding for a standard steering aid – I had to pay extra for the steering aid that was suitable for my needs.
